Sailors are always dreaming of the next upgrade; whether it be a days or years away. I have been planning this upgrade for over a year and this week it is coming to life! This welding team at Spice Island Marine has surpassed any expectation I could have had producing this beautiful arch and davit. I no longer have to take the engine off the raise the dinghy and I can add more solar!
Give a little extra support 💞 The circumnavigation is JUST beginning... all of your help goes towards more gear to make the videos a bit better and the boat safer and more functional for myself as a single hand (and maybe an extra treat for Mako)

That look on Mako's at the Vets was priceless. It took both of us to get him into his crate. Hearing him you'd think he had just received the death sentence. When we were getting ready to leave the Vet, we couldn't get the door to the crate open fast enough for him. The boat is coming along nicely Lauren. Beautiful clip of the sunset. A big hug from all of us.

Looks like I spoke too soon in my last post. What a beautiful job on all the projects, and thanks for the long video showing how they did it. And isn't it Nice to be able to manage a job once in a while instead of always having to be the doing the job? You have awesome project management skills just like everything else you do. Somehow I feel with these last upgrades the boat is really becoming a personal reflection of you, feeling a little bit more like home?

I took lots of underwater video with GoPro before I started to subadive and using better camera. I find that it's better keep camera rolling and then pick up usable bits afterwards. There is some free editing sw, which can cut video clips aligned with frame sequence boundaries, which a around 0.5-1s without re-encoding data. It keeps original quality and is superfast. It only copies video data and put new header and framing into it. I came up to this method because it's much more relaxing to just dive and hold the camera. Also, everything happens so fast, you miss it if the camera is not rolling. Sometimes there's curious fish or octopus. Separate clipping is not needed if one just make the video and delete the original, but I like to keep them. In one hour raw material, there's maybe 5min stuff which is interesting to other people.

I know hindsight is 2020 but I almost would’ve built the solar deck and everything and then made mounts off of it for the Hydro steering That way, it would not interfere at all, and then your Hydro steering could’ve been mounted left or right to accommodate for easier dinghy, lifting, and storage

Nice arch .. now I wonder how the hydrovane will work. I say it’s to much I closed. Satellite positioning can be mounted everywhere.. even under deck. Not saying enclosed near other apparatus but it works fine under a open spot on the deck. I always have to laugh as most boat owners think “ the higher the beter it receives “as it is not. It’s digital and so it receives or it does not. Just wonder how your phone knows where it is as you sit on it.

Hey Lauren, my daughter loves your necklace, where did you get it or is it custom? She is a hard core dingy sailor and instructs at our local SoCal yacht clubs. You have inspired here to cruise the Bahamas along with wanting to go to the San Blas islands. Guess I need to buy another boat on the East Coast, do not want to deal with the canal. Good info on Grenada, stainless work in the states cost a fortune.

I have a similar issue on my yacht, wanting to fit a solar arch around my hydrovane. It seems, looking at your video, that they only tested it with the vane in line with the boat. In use, the wind vane is rotated to the wind angle and doesn't simply flop from left to right. I think yours may foul the framework when rotated; this is the biggest technical issue I have with the planning of the installation. Also, can you let us know what the cost of that installation was please?

Hey Lauren, I am thrilled beyond words at the progress you have made on your boat. Some people might say you were lucky to have found such a talented crew in Grenada to design and build your new davit system for your boat, but I prefer to say you were blessed. I have been around long enough to see how God can bring the right people to you to help with issues you are dealing with. As for this episode, I took a look back at one of your early episodes before watching this one, and WOW, I can't believe you are the same creator. Such a big difference. You look so much more comfortable on camera. The videos are so well thought out, and the b-role footage compliments the narration so beautifully. To say it was an excellent job would be an understatement. I hope you don't mind my praise, because I feel like your hard work has earned it. Be proud of what you've accomplished. You are a pro. 💙🙏💙🙏💙🙏💙

With everything being custom fit that wasn't too bad. Customs can always slow the process down a lot! Ive learned to pre order as much of the materials as possible and have them on board. Its not always budget friendly. But once you're committed to a refit you've already done your homework. And getting as many of the components as close to the source as possible really cuts down the wait time. Learned that lesson the hard way, waited three weeks for my controller to arrive. Like you just experienced, it kept going back and forth due to a customs glitch. The aray is perfectly located! You'll love it for the additional shade it will provide along with your dodger. You'll find when you are in the aft cabins that is substantially cooler not having the sun on the sugar scoop. I hope Mako is getting adjusted to boat life again. Having the AC up will be a big help. Mine seem to wilt when they get warm. By now you are probably under way and closing on the BVI's. I hope you had a wonderful sail and the seas were kind. Can't wait to hear how the passage went and how much you enjoy the the vane and new davit. Its those little things that are huge when you solo. Thanks for the update Lauren. She's becoming a true cruiser now.

So good to see you accomplish your goals. You rock! The welding team did a great job. Were you ever able to explore outside the St. George's area? Anandale Falls... Black Bay Beach... which is so hot during midday your sandals will melt but on the opposite side of the road is a pure, white sand beach. There was an amazing lighthouse which had to be pumped by hand to light the torch. At one time a group of young men lived in the structure with a herd of goats. Fair winds and following seas!

I didn't do anything with welding in my career but a class like that, I learned a ton that if I were designing an arch like this would be excellent if nothing else to understand the process better and understand the challenges. Good fabricators can do amazing things like it was artwork.

Oh no, that hydrovane will not work as it got installed. Only if the wind is coming from straight aft will it swing left and right, for all other courses, it needs to swing at different angles, e.g. fore and aft if abeam and there is no room for that.

Hi Lauren. I hate to bring bad news but I think that your (beautiful and spiffy) solar arch is in the way of the Hydrovane! (and I'm not referring only to the height of the vane) All the measurements the guys took in consideration of the movement of the vane were with the vane pointing STRAIGHT forward! So, in best case scenario, you'll be able to use it (although I doubt even for this) only in "close hauled" point of sale. When angle of the wind changes to close - beam or broad reach, you have to steer the vane towards the wind so instead of moving (relative to the boat) left and right, like the guys were testing, she will need to have room to swing forward and back. And I'm afraid that the vane has no room to swing forward at all... 😔😔😔

1. Hydrovane keeps you on corse to the wind. If wind shifts, your boat will steer to the angle you have set it for. (you'll need to reset it) 2. Unlike the autopilot, it is completely mechanical so it has ZERO power consumption! 3. (God forbid) in case of emergency, if you suffer rudder failure, Hydrovane is completely autonomous and you can use it as auxiliary rudder to retain control of your vessel.
