You are so much more patient with all those workers that are delaying you. Somewhat disappointed that the builder of the boat is not much help. I'm a bit late to the party; I only just stumbled upon your channel and I had to subscribe. I watched a UTube video made several years ago about a boat crossing the Atlantic and the rudder just broke apart and all that was left was the shaft. The sailors were all rescued, by sheer luck, and the boat was left to drift to some unknown graveyard. It might have been another unexpected expense to fix your rudder with hauling out and all the dirty work, but losing one's rudder or steering would be much more costly. Good job, Lauren, for taking on another huge challenge and winning.

You are amazing. Yes the repairs are important because your boat is broken, you just don't know it yet :). Single hand is awesome although I'm not a fan of it, because when the rudder is making a clunking noise, you have no one to check it out. A storm alone is too much. I am shocked that you intend to charter single handed too. Talk about too much. Baby, you need Capt. Gill Fisher. Your peaceful and calm nature is like rolling waves to me. It is very good you are paying attention to those odd vibrations and so on. Better to question those things and get them fixed before you are away from places you can get parts. If you had the means to measure the bushing sizes (plastic bits) you could have a machinist make something like that. The tolerances are not critical and plastic is easy enough to machine so the cost should not be high. Probably not as good as a factory part and potentially more expensive but good to keep in mind if you find a similar broken thing and are in a pinch.
@laurenlanders2 жыл бұрын
For sure! I had the plastics made asap… but it has been a struggle to find the bearing measurements /:
@danielboughton36242 жыл бұрын
@@laurenlanders If you give a machinist the old one they will know the outside diameter and length. Only the inside surface should be worn. Even if the outside is worn through you can give them the diameter of the hole it came out of. They can determine a good inside diameter based on the size of the shaft that goes through it. Given it is a rudder bearing and not a bearing for a driven shaft e.g. a cutlass bearing the fit isn't as critical. It is probably a .005" clearance. Machinists also can get guidance from "machinery's handbook" - a common reference in a machine shop. Hopefully by now you have the real deal.

How things have changed in 30 years since my wife and I did the Bahamas for a year and then were live aboards for 7 years in Miami. We did it in a new boat, but there are still numerous problems to solve. You get to be a pretty good mechanic and trouble shooter. Do it now while you can. For viewing pleasure I'm not a big fan of project videos. But, on the other hand those project videos are immensely helpful for people faced with the same problem. I'm currently refurbishing my keel on my little sailboat and without KZbin videos I would be pretty much clueless on the proper procedures. You probably have one, but if you don't.... pick up a multimeter. One that measures AC / DC / and omhs. It's a hassle like everything else, but you will be able to sort out the solar/ battery issues.
