Jay, a previously owned, home made, built, constructed “anything” is full of how someone else envisioned it. It’s part of their personality that eventually became visible to everyone else. This cabin isn’t your idea, obviously, and because of that you can easily become overwhelmed to the point you don’t know where to start on changing characteristics of the cabin. So much so that it could deter you from attempting any changes. If there’s anything I’ve witnessed with every single cabin I can think of on Lake Melville it’s that cabins are never built with a porch/mud room from the beginning. They are always added on years later. Before any changes are done to the existing structure, if I were you I would start by building a porch. You’ll get familiar with how to make a floor, walls and rafters (which aren’t all that more difficult than your tent structure) you’ll have a sense of accomplishment that I think will really push you to realize you can do more when you stand back and say “I built that”

We have a cabin in northern Ontario on rainy lake, with a 99 year lease, but we have less than 40 years left on it. Its my favorite place to be on earth. You do you and just be happy. (That flat rooftop would be a nice place to hunt from)
@joyceb5864 Жыл бұрын
Instead of a boat, maybe you should look at a pontoon so you can easily haul building supplies to the property. A pontoon is larger, more stable than a boat, less likely to tilt, and allows you to carry more weight. Looking forward to seeing the cabin improvements.
@evr4921 Жыл бұрын
Good score! First thing, if that roof is good and the OSB will hold a nail or screw, side it. If that’s not in the cards paint it inside and out, 2 coats maybe 3.
@teddysmith457 Жыл бұрын
First thing that I would do would be to waterproof the outside of that cabin. Whatever that means, I guess it person can go over the top of the existing OSB with new OSB , but stand it all up so that all the butts lineup and do it board and batten style outside wall. I guess person could just get some Tyvek and go around the complete outside of the cabin and then get and do all the outside again with more OSB lining it all up standing it up so that you can do a board and batten style

Another new adventure! Good luck with it, Jay ! Biggest thing to avoid is feeling rushed or overwhelmed! #1, yup, you got a boat... hope its a decent size (14+ft?) ... its a damn big lake! #2 ... got that gun yet? A cheap, simple, pump 12g with 3" slugs (it's what Alaskan Fish & Wildlife carry) will ward off any grizzly or black bear... plus you can get flares, bear bangers, etc for it too.... not to mention birdshot for ducks, geese, ptarmigan. Start a "to do" list for the cabin .... and you know there will be many, many revisions, ... after you've spent a week, a month, a winter, a year in the cabin! Cheers mate!
@kurtz260 Жыл бұрын
First thing i would do....add some 1" insulation over the osb, cover it in tyvek wrap and reside it with wood or cement siding (hardi board). I like hardiboard because its almost totally impervious to fire
@adriancox-thesantjordigolf3646 Жыл бұрын
I would cement a Foundation to give you a solid base . Then with the Stability around the base. I would support the walls with some very nice vertical logging. To make it look Safe And Sound.

Cover the OSB .... and level and stabilize the cabin .
@leannamiddlebrooks3416 Жыл бұрын
I think the most important thing is to make that cabin a solid structure. Sturdy, well insulated, waterproof etc. Once that’s done redesign the interior to flow. Congratulations and I can’t wait to come along for the journey!

You're getting to fulfill your dreams. Not too many people get the chance to do that. So I would suggest going for it. Expand the first floor and like you said Anchor It Down. Build a nice deck off of it that's covered so you can sit outside and enjoy the scenery. The OSB should be fine if you wrap it with a house wrap and put siding on it

First thing to do you ask? Get the cabin solidly anchored to the ground.
@MeatballCB Жыл бұрын
I know you mentioned at the end that you think it's better to repair the current structure, but wonder if you should reconsider that? Assuming the lease renews, you have 5 years that you could slowly build up a new cabin that is exactly what you want and use the current building as your 'base' until then. I think if it was in the same situation, I'd take this as a perfect opportunity to build something new, that is exactly what I want since I could take my time to build it out instead of trying to repair/retrofit the current structure. Whatever you decide though, looking forward to watching the journey!

Congrats buddy, so happy for you. Go with your gut not what the YT audience thinks. Start with the foundation, then focus on the exterior to make it watertight, then make the interior livable. Insulation will be the key to make it livable in the extreme weather. Take it in chunks, don’t get overwhelmed, from what I’ve seen you have the skills to be successful. If you don’t know how to do something, google it. Finally add-on, maybe a workshop, nice deck, additional buildings, etc. Don’t forget about infrastructure, how are you going to get water, power, etc. Look forward to watching this, wish I was there helping you, looks like a fun project.

Just think about all the work that has to be done. That is a ton of content to make. Still the painted OSB siding is not optimal. Maybe some tar paper or other moisture barrier and metal or other types of panels. Even those 2 ft by 50 ft rolls would be good and easy to transport in a boat or behind in a sled during the winter. A little thin, but would keep the weather off the OSB. Then there is the old rolled roofing, but that does have a shelf life when used as siding.

Congrats on the purchase of that cabin. I would set up one of your hot tents on that site so you have a shelter to stay in while you work on that cabin. I would still tear it down and build something else. That cabin foot print is tiny. Your canvas hot tent has more space. A geodesic dome structure would be awesome. They can be purchased in kit form or you can buy plans and build the panels yourself.

Remember 5 years when your busy goes by Fast.... So, Enjoy the Cabin as your fixing it up because anything can happen....:) Last thing is be Flexible....:) God Bless....❤

Interesting project - a suggestion, however, is that you bring a structural engineer who can advise if it is better to demolish and build a new one or to renovate the house. In the video, it looks like it needs a very extensive refurbishment that costs a lot of money. It is probably not obviously cheaper to renovate! You will need a substantial budget either way.

My first step would be to figure a way to put a sturdy foundation under it. I’d raise the carcass up about a foot with railroad jacks, temporarily support it with more blocking and ground permitting dig footings for a piling based foundation and then let it down and fasten it on the new platform. The crawl space will be helpful for sheltered storage and also convenient for upgrading utilities.

I like your idea, wish I was 20 years younger. This is your dream home,and make it what you want! I had fixed up a 680 sq ft cabin 20 years ago, a with added a vapor barrier over the old flat siding, putting half log siding on the outside, and a thin paneling inside, found rocks I split cemented on chicken wire for entry half way up, and around foundation. I used what resources I had on the property. I sold it for 20 k more than I paid for it and put $5k into it, doing all the work myself. I was 50 at the time. I got at larger "cottage in the wilderness to fix up after I sold it. Good luck!

The "Chateaux Crystal-Jaye". It has a ring to it. I've been watching this crazy Canuck in a tent, in the winter, become a pretty skilled woodsman. If having a cabin fulfills a life long need, fill your boots bro.
