Winter is going strong. It's mid-March and the snow is still flying and the temps are freezing. The cabin is standing up like a champion to the extreme conditions and it's a perfect place to fish and relax by the wood stove. I am cutting down the biggest tree of my life, eating delicious food, and fixing stuff. Join me for northern lights and lots of adventure.

Jay - thank you for not being shy or embarrassed about your learning process with tools and building. To us less skilled, some channels are a bit intimidating when the person doing it is so skilled that it makes you feel inadequate. Your channel makes me feel good. 😊

I think his primary transition was switching from a carpenters saw to a double cut. The courage to show the learning process is what it's all about.

if you fish close to where your cabin is, try a tip -up , you can fish while in you're cabin and when you see the flag go up you drive down and check it. we are all living through you Jay.... thanks

You should consider getting a 12 volt diesel heater. You could set the thermostat for a certain degree like 60 degrees Fahrenheit and in the middle of the night when the wood stove goes out the diesel heater kicks on and maintains a set temperature till you get the wood stove fired back up.

I miss the longer videos, Jay. Do morning coffee with us....pan across the snow covered view out your windows, hug that warm mug as you sip that brown morning nectar (we all have to jumpstart the day with a caffiene jolt!), then let us lose ourselves in the flames - fire has always mesmerized mankind. I would like more cooking time & would like to see you sit down at the table & talk to us as you enjoy your meal. I enjoyed your fishing video where you snagged a fish in minutes then cooked it up. LOL do you know how many people would love to catch a fish in under 5 minutes?!!! You should sell that video to Canada's department of tourism & dept of wildlife/fish & game too!

Useful hint: when you measure take into account the kerf (thickness of blade) so cut on outside (left) of line for precise cuts. Bite me many times when I needed a perfect cut. Love the channel and look forward to the build.

When cutting, only measure the first cut and after cutting, measure for the next cut. Due to the thickness of the blade, you will lose on your length. Most times, who cares if you're off 1/8", but when doing where length is critical, it is a good point to follow. Enjoyed Jay as always.

adding to previous comments from awhile ago, you need to leave the matches in the box and put the box in the fancy match holder. Pull the box lid up enough that the matches are accessible. Having all the matches exposed like they are now is a major fire hazard if a spark goes a flyin!

Hello again Jay, love following along as you make improvements on your cabin. I see you changed your drill to brushless so that is a huge improvement. I am not sure if your in low range or not but if not it is highly recommended for the health of the drill motor to only drill with the auger in low range. Cheers and keep them coming Jay.

Kindling is smaller wood used to start the larger wood burning- you "kindle" the fire. Can be small branches or pieces split or cut from something larger. Been all over the US except the NW and never heard it called anything else.

Hi Jay, just an FYI I think your match holder is designed to hold the whole box of matches, just slide your box in and leave it open on the bottom and the matches should just kind of roll out I'm not sure about the striker it didn't look like the side of the holder would allow you to reach the striker but just some info when you run out of matches try to slide the box in and if it can your set. I could never take the cold but really enjoy the new cabin video's maybe more than your tent videos but love all of them. I will say you know how to eat, and thanks for the video. 😀✌❤

Jay you are doing great. Little tip for when you rebuild the stairs to the loft, you can use the speed square to cut the landings and risers into the 2x6 or 2x8 runners that form the stair frame. Just leave a little over lap on the landings, so that you can put in risers to enclose the stairs for a more finished look. You can also use it to cut the deck bracing for your peer and beam deck foundation.

Have you ever thought of making soda bread in your wee oven? It would go well with a nice stew. I still think you should try relocating the stairs to near the front door. You can have storage and kitchen stuff underneath and room for seating and a couch across from the stove. Maybe even a small spiral staircase since you have the height in the cabin, it would save you a load of space. It’s always so enjoyable watching your videos and the beautiful scenery at your various spots.

Cabin is coming along nicely, with creature comforts like stairs. Now you can get a couple metal closet rod holders and a long enough 1 inch diameter dowel to make a mini-closet of the space under the stairs. Put a few coat hangers in there for when company visits. 🙂 Next question is ... when does Crystal come to inspect your work?

Two things that can help the cabin retain heat. Get some foam board insulation and make some panels to put outside around the cabin perimeter between the floor joists and the ground. Keeping the wind from blowing under the cabin will make a huge difference. When it gets warm, put some plywood on the underside of the roof eaves to close up the exposed 2x4s. A lot of heat is likely escaping from where the wall framing contacts the roof 2x4s.

Jay the cabin and your tool knowledge has improved leaps and bounds. Whenever we drop trees in the woods either on roads or atv/snow go trails we will either use traffic cones or crossed sticks/branches with red flags/hankie so people don’t drive thru our cutting area accidentally.

A little tip when angering your hole. Once you break through, reverse the drill and run it. That will slush and disperse it under the ice and leave you with a clean hole and less of a watery mess. Plus, when jigging, pause a while between jigs every 3rd or fourth time. Very good chance that the pike will bite when still.

Jay, I fish a lot, to catch a pike you could set a tip up with a piece of some kind of fish as bait. Fish works best for bait, hot dogs or slim jim can even work. Your situation is perfect for tip ups you can have it set and watch from the cabin. But it is more gear and there is something to be said about simplicity.
