"That data is forever … You have no control over what societal norms might change in the next 10 years and that data suddenly becomes incriminating. You're basically making a bet that you and the people with the guns will always stay on good terms.”

I watched a law enforcement video back when cell phones became a thing. Wire Tapping always 'required' a legal order while wireless communication is free of that. Regardless of encryption or any other form of privacy used - it is still legal to intercept any wireless communication.

Some of us already do this. For instance...where I live voting records are public information (party affiliation). We ALWAYS check party affiliation before hiring any staff - medical, office, business. Simply, we use the information we have at hand to NOT hire any one affiliated with the incorrect party. To that, we are in a right to work state (FL) so, if your not listed and show the wrong colors - we have the right to dismiss anyone for any reason (right down to, I dont like that Biden pin on your daughters purse).

@@nas191 not long ago I caught a minor story but an App was straight up sold entirely. So its not really 'sharing with 3rd parties' rather the entire thing was sold and owned by a new party. It was some Chinese 'romance game' (tencent? not sure who) and some Russian company bought it. There was the complaints about withdrawals even where people had long since canceled any auto-payments etc.

"Days of privacy" is fantasy than never existed. 200 years ago people wrote letters on paper. To talk to someone you need physically meet to that someone, so no remote communication. And so on. The Real issue is if you Don’t “Allow” all these apps to track and have access to your data…..you simply CANNOT use them. There are very few of ANY apps When one is given the option to “Decline Terms of Service” and still be able to use the product. This needs legislation. Here’s where it’s going and imagine this analogy. The Next vehicle you buy, you must sign saying that the manufacturer has a right to track and log everywhere you go and send it to any “3rd party” it cares to. If you DO NOT AGREE to those terms then you simply Arwnt allowed to purchase the car!!! That’s where we are at with apps

Except that all sounds reasonable. You don't have a right to dictate what product is sold to you, you only have a right to dictate what product you decide to buy. That said, at least in the US the federal courts have upheld that it is not a crime to break a ToS and there are plenty of ways to get around a lot of the tracking if you want to. I also want to add that if we take a different path and give people legal immunity to tracking then we are just asking for every rich paedo and con artist to cream themselves at once.

I see so many annoying Medicare plan ads, and I am over a decade away from being old enough to be eligible for Medicare. It is not like signing a contract. The US Federal Court of Appeals has ruled that TOS can not be legally enforced. It's how they generate revenue. But who knows who THEY give or sell that data to? That's the crux of her argument.

As the poster above already said. Paid apps do it. For Christ sakes, WINDOWS now does it. There's services across all industries that people pay for and they do the same. Your ISP. Your TV and it's "smart" crap installed on it. If your display is connected to the Internet. All these TV's are sending everything you watch off to somewhere. If the software isn't open source and vetted by people, you don't know much about what it's actually doing. Yes you can block things and monitor network activities on your own network and get an idea of what these things are up to. Again. Look at your damn TV. These things or at least their remotes almost have microphones in them. Look at your Internet activity with these things powered on and connected to it internet. See the never ending pings back to their servers. The ad network hits and so on. Don't even do anything with the TV. Just turn it on and let it sit on the home screen.

The cellphone is a sophisticated reconnaissance device. I do consider whether I "need" an app, and what privileges I allow it. I appreciate the ability to do things like allow location sensing one time only by request and so forth. I don't use the phone for social media, and rarely allow access to the camera or mic. Basically, I trust apps as little as possible, and I keep in mind that phones are easy to hack.

I started following Naomi Brockwell last month because she covers privacy concerns. I was not surprised when I learned here that she used to work for John Stossel. I think she learned a thing or two from him on not trusting the government and how to advocate opposing points of view during her videos to counter the arguments.

@@RADIUMGLASS No. She tries to ask the 5 W's and then presents facts. If she was indoctrinated she would only give her opinion without facts. For example, she shows where in apps that you agreed to allow big tech to spy on you. Often you really have to dig down way into the settings to find it. You may say that John gives his opinion (and he does) but at least he offers facts which he checks, offers up studies, and tries to counter opposing points of views to back up his opinions. You need all points of view to do your own critical thinking. By John offering some opposing points of view, you can research that view yourself to see if it is still valid and make up your own mind. Most people today just repeat the same propaganda to prove that they are right or resort to name calling. Most have drunk the Kool-Aid and keep wearing the mask.

While I care about data privacy to a degree, I'm mostly okay with my data being shared with other private companies. The worst that can happen is that it gets exposed. The more troubling aspect of this is when government has access to the data. Because governments, as she points out, can initiate force against you for things in that data. If China has that data, I don't particularly care, I'm not traveling there, and they're not going to come here to arrest me. But when the US government has access to that data, it's more troubling given the power that they have.

I'd be more worried about China using one's identity to manipulate some information which wrongly includes you where past actions by the individual create reasonable doubt which is enough in today's climate. A database is only useful when filters are applied and results released to interested parties.

If you actually read the licensing agreements for apps you'd be shocked what you're signing away. I have very few apps, and I control what they're allowed access to on my phone. I don't allow friends to take pictures of me on their phones (most apps have access to photos) and I certainly don't allow my picture on social media. I don't use any of the facial log on IDs. We just checked last week and apple nor google could identify a picture of me. That's the way I want it. The government is a different story. They have your picture through driver's license and passport, but I don't use their camera system at TSA. I make they use my ID instead. They always say why? They're cameras all over the airport photographing you. I respond with "so why do I need to put my face in front of this camera?"

They have a record of everything you’re doing both inside and outside of your home … Trust me, the US code, and your state code are so intricate and so thick that you probably break a rule every single day … All they have to do is have AI search through all of your logs to find where you’ve broken the law . If you become someone someone they don’t like or opposition or they decide you are a “threat” to the government… they have all the information they need to incriminate you on something else, and not even have to go after you for the thing they want you arrested for. Look at January 6 …. They have literally tracked down people who weren’t even around the main area or were videotaped just through their phones being with them and the GPS tracking and logging that the government does . They keep arresting more and more people that were “involved “. That should scare people because that means you could literally be somewhere and have no idea what’s going on but because you happen to be in the same political affiliation or of said things that support that person and now you’re there and you get arrested and a lot of these people are still waiting for their trial because they’re trying to figure out the best thing to nab that person on…. They can’t really get them for insurrection because there wasn’t one, so they’re trying to find something in their life that’s illegal so that they can reasonably detain them . That’s how scary this is already gotten . We are already there . I don’t like having a type all this out anyway …. I don’t trust their real time watching what I type. Which means even if I typed it in and erased it they probably already know I thought/typed it . So we’re all willing to get rid of most of our technology … we are pretty much stuck in this loop.

The example I use is when Japan struck Pearl Harbor and all of a sudden it became a problem to be Japanese in the United states and all Japanese-American Citizens were rounded up and put in internment camps. You never know what you're doing right now that could change tomorrow, there have already been cases of people being put in jail because of their Alexa device
