Big Drive

This short animation film tells the story of a family road trip across the Canadian prairies set in the 1970s. In an era before in-car movies and video games, 4 sisters squeeze into the back of the family car for a long journey. While the parents keep a steady watch on the road ahead, restlessness gradually gives way to mayhem in the car’s close quarters. Just before the ride becomes unbearable, the sisters are inspired to combine their creative energy and the big drive becomes an even bigger adventure.

Wow, I'm old enough to remember road trips with nothing to do. I'm an only child. My parents got me books (still love books) and we played road games like "I Spy". I like this video, it shows kids with imaginations instead of depending on something else entertaining them.

As a child we would go on Sunday picnics. I remember always thinking🤔/saying it's a far drive to get there. And it felt like it. It was only until I grew up (16ish). That i realized it was just on the outskirts (suburbs)of my city. lol😁

I remember road trips too. I am an only child. Road trips for me were miserable, so I slept through them (when I was younger) and opted out when I was older. Why were they miserable? My dad always wanted to relive the trips the way he experienced them as a boy. We'd go to church Sunday morning, and (many times) wouldn't stop at home for anything on the way, so I had nothing to do on the trips. Also, he never listened when I said I was hungry, so I learned to bring pocket change and buy snacks at gas stations. If he saw me, he'd growl, and laugh menacingly. I snuck Pop-Tarts I'd bought. Oh, also, if we did stop at home, my go-to food was pbj. If he saw me making them, he'd laugh and talk about making "sammitches", and when we got to the car he'd use it as an excuse not to stop for real food. "Pass me one of your sammitches, kid." he'd say, and I'd have to give up one of my emergency stash. He encouraged making them at home, rather than stopping for a meal. "I'm hungry!" "Should'a taken my advice and made yourself some sammitches while we were at home." My mother, for her part, helped as much as she could, but didn't see the Aspergers in him until I was old enough to refuse to go. Once I refused, he gave up the idea. We don't go on road trips anymore. Someone is always miserable.

We had to do this as we lived a long way for my grandparents and went there every summer but my parents made it workable we traveled from Southern California almost from the Mexican border all the way to the Canadian border of Washington State. And we learn to get along we sometimes spot but we were warned that if we caused my father to have to stop we would spend our vacation in my grandparents guest room and no my grandparents weren't any more lenient than my parents. Spending 2 to 4 weeks at my grandparents without anything to do now which would you have done and I think that would have worked out even in today's environment you take away the cell phones the video games the TV and everything yeah I wouldn't have sat two weeks in my grandparents guest room no way man we read books we did puzzles May necklaces play games I slept a lot because I got car sick. I even remember throwing up on my father while he was trying to clean up my mess from one time a much to Dusty Road I felt so horrible he told me it wasn't my fault one time I got a full set of new clothes because I've gone through everything before we could even get from one of our shorter trips when we used to live in Washington on the Dalles to where my grandparents lived in Wenatchee for some reason I just wasn't feeling good that time and I threw up through everything so Mom had to stop at JCPenney's and buy me new clothes I didn't have anything clean to wear. When I was old enough my father made me Keeper of the gas mileage the mileage that we drove road signs Etc and as each child Grew successively older we were all assigned a different job we were also assigned a job of making sure the younger child was in the car when we got back in after a bathroom trip even though I'm sure my mom made sure. I only remember us getting punished once on our vacation and it was one where we just took too long getting to our grandparents we went and saw too many attractions and my brother was in his teenage years and he was just pushing the envelope but other than that you spent more time with your family and you did communicate because you had to there wasn't anything else to do.
