R1830 Twin Wasp was the best. It burst into life with a minimum of cranking and sounded absolutely spectacular.

The sexy liquid cooled V12 Merlin always gets the credit, but those workhorse radials from Wright and Pratt & Whitney are definitely the aero engines that won World War II. Powering countless numbers of allied fighters, bombers, and transports.

The Marlins and Gryphons are so cool! Because of the twin cam covers, they almost looked like auto engines!! Only recently did I learn about RR and Packard Meteors which essentially were Merlind adapted to tanks!!

My dad was a mechanic on the R-4360 Wasp Major for the USAF from 1953 - 1957. He worked on the legendary B-36 Peacemaker.

Your Dad?? Awesome! What's awesome is that 28 cylinder Beast actually worked!! And worked amazingly well! 6 of those on that "PeaceMaker"!! along with 4 Turbojets!! Question: Did the Jet Engines require their own fuel.supply or did they just burn the same Gasoline that the Piston Banners did?
@JackDavis
@JackDavis 4 ай бұрын
@@spaceace1006Good question. I had to go look it up. The jets were designed to run on the same 114/145 aviation fuel as the piston engines.

@@spaceace1006 Also note that those 28 cylinder behemoths were turbocharged to provide boost. As I recall, it boosted horsepower from 2800 to 4300.

В СССР двигатель "Мерлин" был хорошо знаком. Их эксплуатировали и ремонтировали до начала 50-х годов двадцатого века. А в качестве наглядных пособий встречались еще и в 70-е.

Interesting engines - it seems strange that a couple of the engines developed by Wright are attributed to Pratt and Whitney.
@GGigabiteM
@GGigabiteM 2 жыл бұрын
There are only two P&W engines in this video, the R-4360 and the R-1830. Both were definitely designed and built by P&W and not Wright. Maybe you're confusing the R-1830 with the R-1820 later in the video, which was a Wright engine. Wright never made a four row radial engine, but they did have the strange 42 cylinder monster, the R-2160.

Why?
@taggartlawfirm
@taggartlawfirm 2 жыл бұрын
@@bigredc222 generally a couple of reasons, the engine needs some kind of load even just a club weight to keep from over speed. I expect they ran it only at idle. and second on the P&W (and most engines using the Hamilton std) the prop Governor ran on oil pumped through the crank shaft. I suppose they had that capped.

The engine has its own governor that limits its speed.The load on the engine doesn't determine its rotational speed.
