BIG FAMILY GROCERY SHOPPING IN NYC : Traveling Full-time w/9 kids

We're still exploring New York City with our 9 kids and loving it.
We try grocery shopping in a typical NYC grocery store and we just don't fit. After the store a few of us headed down to central park and sweated our bums off. Thank goodness there is an ice cream truck on nearly every corner!

My mom (and a lot of other New York moms- mostly in the outer boroughs) use shopping carts for the big grocery shopping trips. I just carry the bags in my arms 😝

If you think a NYC grocery store is small, wait until you get to France! There you've got la boulangerie for bread, la boucherie for butchered meets, la charcuterie for your dried meets (try the salami with the white skin - amazing!), le fromagerie for your cheese and other dairy and eggs, and all the other random bits at l’épicerie. And most are just wide enough to queue up and then get out. Of course you can always get to le supermarché but that just tends to look like a North American grocery store and where is the fun in that!

Well if it makes you feel better, I'm a Canadian who took 10 years of French (20 years ago) and exhausted what remains of my vocabulary on that post (not to mention that I had to look up how to spell everything except charcuterie and fromagerie). We won't talk about how my visit there a couple of years ago except to say that the precise French accent is very different from the Quebecois drawl.

We love NYC! I have to thank Elijah. My 3-year-old, SP, saw him riding the skateboard and proclaimed that he needed one as well. We will see if he can convince my husband and me that he is responsible enough for one. The sidewalks of Chicago will never be the same again. ;)

Try sheets of wax paper for slides. I keep a box of wax paper in my van in the warmer months. It works great! My kids love it!

I grew up in the city, never drove and loved it. My health loved it and I enjoyed being able to explore instead of point a to b. One day I plan to take my hubby and kids to the city I grew up in and hopefully the foods still good! 🤗

Showing my age here, but I remember when the subway in NYC was 35 cents...(Back in the 80's) Central Park is still gorgeous., though I have some sad feelings seeing it again, my first love drowned in one of the lakes. He, like you guys got overheated in the park, but instead of getting ice cream he opted for a dive in one of the manmade lakes. Got caught in one of the drain lines and drown. He was only 25 yrs old when he lost his life in 4 feet of water & he was 6'3.. But regardless... beautiful video. I grew up in jersey City... right across the Hudson River.

On the central park website there are phone numbers you can take to take a self walking tour. It will tell you the history of different areas.

Since you have the van, you MUST go to the BRONX Zoo, the Botanical Gardens... You could always take the trains though. There are also places nearby on Long Island where you could find a Costco or BJ's for Bulk shopping. I live outside NY in a small village in Westchester. You could also take a train down to Coney Island and the NY Aquarium! I'm definitely a suburban/country girl. I get claustrophobic even in small cities, forget about NYC. I can honestly count the number of times that I have been into the city on 2 hands since 9/11, and my oldest sister has lived there for almost a decade of that time. 😭 I need trees, grass, and space between buildings and houses. Have you been to the Museum of Natural History yet? You should also try the rolled shaved iced cream. There is 10 Below in flushing. Definitely an experience!!!

You guys are getting so good at taking the subway! You guys are actually near Socrates Sculpture Garden. It's free and has some cool exhibits from time to time. Also the Museum of Moving Image is near you too. They have a lot of cool things to do for the kids. They had as doing voice overs for films. I got to do the voice of Babe.

It's really interesting to see how some of the kids "feel" the difference of being in a city and doing what you were used to. They don't like the noise, the traffic and they seem to be really limited by the city environment. Just a thought.
