Big Fish can be interpreted in a number of beautiful ways. Much of it is circular. Edward Bloom used his wedding ring to catch the big fish, but at the end we see Edward give his wedding ring to his wife before he returns to the water as big fish , in other words HE was the big fish and his wife actually caught him, etc..... Wonderful spiraling mythology on display in this movie. Makes me tearful just to think about it.

The important thing is that in the end he understood his father and how extrordinary a man he was and how many people he affected in his life. He told big fish stories and in the end became the stories. This is film making at its best.

I know it’s hard to imagine but I understand where his son is coming from. It’s like finding out Santa isn’t real. Some kids feel a broken sense of trust with their parents permanently. As he got older, heard all the same stories over and over, he got tired and wasn’t able to separate fact from fiction. He felt totally disconnected from his dad. Then his dad does the same song and dance at his wedding. I completely understand where he’s coming from. I have a rocky relationship with my family though, so I relate a lot to will. The people who’ve let me down the most and been the most hurtful have been my family. It’s a complex situation. And as far as what everything means, some of it is just part of the whimsy and magic. It doesn’t necessarily have a deep meaning all the time. It’s a Tim Burton movie so it’s not unexpected! Loved your reaction as usual ❤️❤️❤️

I agree. A lot of the sympathy in this film points to the son accepting his father's eccentric view of the world, and how he wasted so many years estranged from his father, and eventually comes to embrace the fantasy and whimsy of his dad's larger-than-life stories. But there is also the son's point of view: he never got a straight answer. Once the "magic" wore off from his dad's tall tales, he yearned for a plain, unvarnished truth. The fantasy and whimsy make for a more interesting story, but it would be nice to know some of the hard truths that the whimsy is built on top of. And his dad stubbornly refused to ever divulge that. Dad could have learned to listen to what his son was asking for, also: relationships are a two-way street. I personally have a wonderful relationship with my parents, but one of my grandfathers had a tendency to be a difficult guy, sometimes. He loved a "good debate," and would sometimes take things too far, or would play Devil's Advocate, even when it wasn't appropriate. At a certain level, you just had to "accept" that as one of his personality quirks, but on another level, it would be nice if the people in our lives would recognize when they've gone too far, and have some respect for others. So yeah, I have a lot of sympathy for the son's point of view, as well. I think we're supposed to, to a certain degree; I feel the film does a decent job of being sympathetic to both parties (as well as to the mom, who kinda' navigated both sides), though I think it does lean more heavily in Dad's direction.

I love this movie so much. Like an adult fairy tale. Love the 'scary' giant, Carl.. lol.. Love the scene where he's laying in the tub and his wife gets in with him. It gets me everytime. 😭 BTW, the actor who played Carl held the Guiness record for biggest feet, at size 29.5, and longest toe.. 😁🦶

This beautiful movie reminds of how I knew Former N.Y Yankees Pitcher Don Larsen-(1949 1960)--I always assumed he was just another broke down, senile old drunk who took my cab home and lived in a beat-up looking house. The stuff he told me about Jackie Robinson and all the other great players sounded fishy, but I loved his colorful storytelling. About 5 years after I quit taxi driving, Don died. I went to his wake and found out from many MLB legends there SOME of his B.S wasn't--Including the time he pitched the only perfect game in World Series History with a roaring hangover!!

I always took the girl in Specter to represent the darker side of things. She was the witch, she was the temptation away from his wife. His wife and the river were the light. The river brings life. His wife was his life. His “lady in the river”. It is a beautiful story and I can’t make it through with dry eyes. Saw it in the theater and multiple times since. The ending credit music “man of the hour” by Pearl Jam also gets me. Every time! Film making at it’s finest!

I grew up in Montgomery, Alabama where a lot of the movie was filmed (they also filmed around the smaller towns of Montgomery like Prattville, Wetumpka, Tallassee, Millbrook and Lowndesboro). They even used Capital Heights the school I went to for 7th grade for the baseball & football game scenes. I recognized so many locations in this movie. I still live in Alabama now, but I’m in Oxford and it’s In-between Birmingham & Atlanta off I-20. What’s funny is the Reboot of The Wonder Years is set in Montgomery, but 98% of it is filmed in Atlanta. Crazy how they can swap & substitute for locations. They talk about Auburn University in Big Fish, but weren’t able to film there. They ended up using Huntingdon College where if you’ve ever read or seen any ghost stories about Alabama? They all talk about The Red Lady of Huntingdon College. We passed by it every day when I went to Forest Avenue Elementary School and we would all stare into the windows to see if we could see her. Especially at night if we would pass by in our parent’s cars.

I loved this movie so much I bought it". The main character reminds me of when I would tell my children bedtime stories I would make up or be from books of old where there are stories people forgot. I felt bad the son lost time with his father, but in the end the son got it. And now passes the stories on to his children. Bye the bye my kids are all grown up, and three of my children are into books and two of them read stories to their children. Thank you for your reaction to this. I appreciate it very much.. Seeing a few different reactors react to this movie. I’ve realized men and women view this film through a very different lens. As a man, and as you grow up, you look to forge your own identity and make your own place in the world. No man is content existing as a footnote in his father’s legacy. Perhaps a very young boy might. But not as a man matures through adolescence and finally adulthood. Any woman watching this film immediately regresses to “Daddy’s little girl” and is more than happy to live within the shadow of big strong “daddy” So let me reframe things and put into context you can understand ladies. Imagine being a young girl. And you had a mom who was super hot. And all your life everyone always just went on about how hot your mom was and everywhere you went, everyone just gravitated towards her and gave her all the attention. Even on your prom night, you’ve made yourself beautiful, but your mom is entertaining your date and has him enraptured with his full attention. Now ladies, imagine your wedding day. A day you’ve dreamt about all your life. It’s your dream day and you look great. But then your hot mom shows up wearing a tight and alluring dress. Everyone’s eyes are on her the whole day. And everyone simply wants to be in her orbit and make sure she’s happy. How would you feel about that ladies? How would you feel if this is how your prom night and wedding day went and this was what your mom was doing to you your whole life. You were never allowed your moment or chance to shine. Because anywhere your mom went, she took all the eyes and attention as she flirted with everyone around her. How would you feel about your mother? What kind of relationship do you think you would have with her? Would you be eager to invite her to special events that are supposed to be your day? Do you understand ladies? If you can snap out of your “daddy’s little girl regression” for a moment, can you understand and empathize the perspective the son is coming from?
