Just loved your video. You have a humility of heart in the way you teach yet it is obvious you are pretty good at foiling especially in those light winds. You are an expert in disguise. Cherry Beach, Toronto was where I first learned how to windsurf. How times have changed 40 plus years later. I am inspired to go revisit it after seeing your video. I loved your explanation of the mid vs big wing. It confirmed what I always felt about big wings. They are super slow and the lift they provide can be over the top. If you are 90 years of age or older and like to keep things really really slow the big wing is the way to go. (Yes. I plan to be foiling at 90 plus years of age). Otherwise you only need a wing that is big enough to get you up and foiling but not so big that it keeps lifting you. Its like flying a kite to big and being overpowered.

Thanks so much for your kind words :) yes, the big wing is definitely slower. Good for learning but would agree that it can be over the top at times. If you’re ever back in Toronto for a visit let us know :)

I've also learned to foil over the last 18 months on a janky CRX setup using a 65cm mast - Recently just becoming VERY comfortable with traveling at higher speed, but I'm still struggling with foot changes without touching down. I'm happy you shared this brand of foil that is compatible with my CRX board, I was worried about having to buy a complete kit when I'm ready to make the investment.

Yeah - it's nice to be able to use the CR:X board and save some money. At some point I think we'll get a new foilboard - something more buoyant - but for now this works for us!

Went with a Zeeko Blaster 4'8 board with US boxes, Duotone Spirit Surf 1250wing 90cm mast, and the Spirit GT 565 race wing. Makes a great combo for playing in the waves, going crazy fast, and jumping. Generally have more fun on the 565 wing. 1250 is good when the wind is super light or for foil surfing. The rear wing has adjustable shims so you can add more or less angle, they are pretty effective, could feel the difference. Finally bit the bullet and went for 14m lines on the 13m Ozone Chrono V2, the short lines really make the kite way more responsive for foiling. Interesting to see other foil setups :)
@OurKiteLife
@OurKiteLife 4 жыл бұрын
Nice - sounds like you've got a good set-up. Wish we could try shorter lines but the wind is up high at our spot - so without line extensions, you're more likely to end up swimming

@OurKiteLife
@OurKiteLife 4 жыл бұрын
So far I've only tried strapless foiling a couple of times. If you're used to strapless riding it's probably the way to go, and it's easier for foot switches I'd imagine. The board I use isn't very buoyant so having straps help for water starts

How big is the speed difference between big and medium/small wings? I have a large front wing and I have not been able to crack 32 km/h (20 mph). I hear about other riders averaging 40+ km/h and I wonder how much of the difference is the foil. I don't really _need_ to ride faster, it's just interesting that my foil setup is currently slightly slower than my twin-tip

Did you also try the smaller wing with the longer fuselage and bigger stabilizer? I feel like a lot of things you attribute to the bigger wing might also be due to the longer fuselage and bigger stabilizer? If you really want to compare front wing size effects you should compare on the same setup.

We had a CR:X foil set-up for the past couple of years. Recently we bought a 91cm RDB mast, with a large wing (1200 cm) and medium wing (730 cm), with two fuselages and stabilizers as shown in the video. Great video as usual! Have you tried very small foil board? The best combo for cruising and wave riding seems to be very short board and big wing. I do have a very short board and it has less inertia to ignite turns and make you focus on the foil beneath it rather than the board.

Don't your weigth matter in the choiceof bigger or smaller wings?
@OurKiteLife
@OurKiteLife 4 жыл бұрын
it would be wrong to say that it doesnt, but how much weight matters is up for debate. We find wind speed is a bigger factor, as the lift of the wing depends on the speed that you foil with. Big wing starts lifting you up at about 5 knots, and medium wing starts lifting you up at about 10 knots cruising speed.
