Rummy's Corner

Жыл бұрын

Big George Foreman had one of the most extraordinary careers during the long rich history of professional boxing.
Foreman won Olympic Gold in 1968, he was a two-time world heavyweight champion, and the most amazing thing about Foreman is that his two championship reigns were separated by more than 20 years. Indeed, the span between his two championship reigns included a complete 10 year absence from the ring, resulting in two clearly defined chapters during the long and illustrious career of Big George.
This career recap boxing documentary will provide a look back at the amazing career of Big George Foreman.

Ali needed 51 rounds to barely beat Frasier and Norton, being the one who went down once. George Foreman only needed 4 little rounds to totally annihilate Frasier and Norton, sending them down for a total of 9 times. But Ali beat Foreman in 8 rounds.

Not only is it a great career. From what I've seen in every interview foreman is a magnificent man. Put Old Foreman's brain in Young Foreman's body and there's not a man in the history of boxing that could chat to him, my personal GOAT whose only bad mark was a once in a lifetime set of scenarios and a once in a lifetime fighter combining to produce a 2/10 scenario, which is to say he wins that Ali fight 8 times out of 10, and that's why he never got the rematch in the time between that loss and when God called him to preach. The comeback thankfully ensures that Zaire alone will not be his legacy.
@johnosullivan6439
@johnosullivan6439 Жыл бұрын
He never got a rematch with Ali because he was never again ranked as the mandatory challenger after Ali beat him in Zaire. Jimmy Young beat him on points in 1977 (after which he retired) and both Young and Ken Norton were ranked ahead of him for the right to face Ali. It wouldn't have mattered anyway - Ali was simply too fast, too skilful for Foreman, who was powerful but who moved around the ring like he'd been shot with tranquiliser darts.

I think, had young Foreman had the ring IQ and patience of his older self, he would probably have been the greatest heavyweight of all time. With that said, there's a reason Ali never gave him a rematch - he knew Foreman was incredibly dangerous, even though he did win the first fight.

George is always a great subject. He really was a freak of nature. Monstrous power sometimes seemingly from nowhere, and an astoundingly good chin. Holyfield is on record as saying George was the hardest puncher he ever faced, including commenting along the lines of "even blocking some of his shots would shake you; it hurt". I'd be willing to bet on the loss to Briggs being crooked as hell. I suspect the powers that be wanted George to go away, and didn't want him getting in the way of a 'new' era; hard to imagine he'd have won against the also brilliant Lennox Lewis, mind you. Cheers

Always find his later entry into the heavyweight elite to be so interesting, an old guy, slow compared to his competition ...but a boxing mind that's been in the game for decades and the heaviest hands you'll ever face. Those late game shots against Moorer define the heavyweight division, it can all change so quick and that's what we love about it.

Considering what George accomplished in his 2nd career (and of course his first) he definitely has to be placed as a top 5 all time HW Boxer. - Olympic Gold - HW champ by KO > Frazier - KO > Norton - KO > Frazier ll - KO > Lyle 2nd career - TKO > D. Qawi - KO > Cooney - great fight VS Holyfield - KO > Moorer to become the oldest HW champ of all time. A record that still stands. - Out pointed S.Briggs (HW contender half Georges age) though the judges were obviously paid off. I got George at #3 all time HW.

George Foreman is such an important part of boxing history. As a young man, he more pulverized his opponents into dust than outboxed them, leaving a trail of devastation and power. But beneath it all, you could sense he was a man unfulfilled and driven more by intimidation and fear (sounds like a certain Iron Mike if I do say so myself). After George found God, you could tell his motivators in the ring were completely different. A strategist (with his almost same power), George showed immense ring IQ and generalship, albeit all at a slower pace. His match against Holyfield is a triumph of courage and heart, as he displayed an incredible chin and, more importantly, a will to win that his younger self could only dream of against an absolutely prime Holyfield. He completely bamboozled Michael Moorer, and knew he could do it as well, telling Jim Lampley for months that's how it would go down. The classic what if of combining George's younger physical gifts with his older maturity and intellect....but hey, isn't that the lament of us all who age??? George Foreman is my favourite boxer and it's not even close. His type is cut from a cloth that is so rare to see these days but which is so important to boxing. He is a warrior. Rant over.
