My grandfather was an absolute boxing fanatic, I consider myself one too. I have watched over 200+ fights in my life with my grandfather before he passed. He was an old school Italian, his favorite fighter of all time was Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Built on a what seemed like a never ending hard road to success, molded Marvelous to become the one of the greatest middleweights of all time. I love watching Rummy’s corner because of how everything is broken down, put in order, and described to the audience. I love boxing and I think Rummy’s corner does an amazing job educating people about the legendary fighters we once had and how they made their own mark in history. Marvelous Marvin Hagler was special

"Often forgotten about"? I haven't seen any fan, fighter or journalist that doesn't put him among the best of the best. He might've been underrated in his early career, struggling to get a well deserved title shot, but once he became undisputed champion he earned the respect of the boxing world, and his impressive strike of succesful title defenses only cemented it. Everybody remembers in awe his victory over Hearns, most people agree he deserved a win against Leonard, etc. And since his retirement, his legacy is well known and respected as the legendary fighter he was. If there are forgotten or underrated fighters, I don't think Hagler is one of them.

Well done! I was waiting for you to put something out about Marvin, but you took your time and you did it well:-) it's really hard to believe he's gone. Fucking virus. I was in college when Marvin middleweight champion. I was playing football and also had been doing some amateur boxing. One guy in my gym went with me to see Hagler vs. Hearns and he was a Hearns fan. After the first round we looked at each other and we're just shell-shocked and joyful. Neither one of us talked trash and we knew this wasn't going to go the distance but we didn't know who was going to finish up right. I think Marvin one of the greatest middleweight champion for some reason, his determination and always staying in shape, the fact that he had to wait so long to get the championship belt, that he got screwed against Vito antuofermo, but from a boxing standpoint I think it's biggest Advantage was he was just as good from the left as from the right. He never had to change his footwork. A lot of guys can go lefty or righty to be cute and maybe score a punch here there but Marvin was his good from one side as the other. So he might engage as a southpaw and finish you off as a conventional fighter or vice versa. That Talent which I haven't seen another fighter, along with his tenacity and always being in shape and conducting himself like a champion make him great. It's hard to say he's the greatest of all time only because of Sugar Ray Robinson. 2guys that in their Prime I'm sure would have brought out the best in each other. But he's the best in my lifetime and I haven't seen anybody in that Division come close. I love Sugar Ray Leonard but he was a bitch he should have bought Hagler when he said he was going to instead he sat ringside for 5 years and through commentary and studied Marvin Walmart oven for people like Tommy Hearns and Mugabe. Then when he agreed to fight Marvin he pushed it down 12-round. I remember him saying he couldn't have gone another three rounds and he lost 10 pounds in the rain. Every time I watch this fight I have it a draw or or Marvin by one round. Granted they are hard rounds to judge because they're all very close. I think Marvin's one mistake was he wanted to fight Sugar Ray from a conventional stance. He hated the guy so much he wanted to knock them out and do it old school. And I remember watching that fight in a public forum oh, the last fight I ever paid for, and honestly I think Ray got a lot of Goodwill from the judges because everybody expected him to be knocked out early. I give him credit for being competitive but just because you are a welterweight and you moved up middleweight and you didn't get knocked out in the first three rounds doesn't mean you get to win every round you survive. Also Marvin tried to have a rematch with Ray but Ray had already dictated the terms in the first fight, and now that he had the title he just made it possible for Marvin and God bless Marvin he just said fuck you and went to Italy and made movies. Just like Lennox Lewis that was somebody I was glad to see leave boxing when he did. Left the sport with his mind and body intact. You don't see that a lot so when you care about somebody you're grateful they finish when they should. Although I don't think one more fight with Leonard would have hurt him, rated want to fight fair the first time who the hell thought he was going to fight fair at the second time. John mugabi, Thomas Hearns, Mustafa hamsho twice, Juan Roldan, Tony Simpson oh, and this is just when he became champion look at his record before he became Champion he fought the toughest of the tough. I can't put them above Sugar Ray Robinson but I can't put in below either. Something they both had in common was when someone beat them comet in the rematch they would kick that person's ass. People like Pretty Boy Floyd don't understand that. Because they play it safe. Unfortunately maybe boxing rewards that but I would put hagler's body work against any one of the modernaire even if they claimed they were undefeated. And I'd like to see someone try and switch hit like Marvin. I haven't seen it since he retired. Thank you for a great video to a great man!

Thanks for this Geoffrey. As a Hagler fan, I've seen the Hagler story covered many times over but this was fascinating as the coverage and commentary focused on observing Hagler's boxing technique inside the ring. The significant coverage of his early career pre-championship fights also serves to highlight Hagler's footwork, combinations and punch accuracy that weren't necessarily so obviously on display during the super fights of the latter part of his career even if his conditioning, jab and chin were ever present. RIP Marvelous Marvin.
