These cooperation videos have been a BOMB. Regarding the topic, I really like the way Petr Yan blocks - and I'd think the same tecnique applies regardless of the gloves you're wearing (he's using the high guard, blocking with mostly forearms)

FR had over 50 people tell me it doesn't work as I spar and get blasted by people way bigger then me. And they can barely knock me down let alone even close to out through my guard. Love the stuff about reaching. Here's some food for thought. Old school boxing (pre gloves being standard) used a longer reaching guard with the lead hand and kept the rear hand close to the chest. The lead hand was for throwing short jabs and the rear hand protected the chin while staying loaded for a cross. Interestingly, the lead hand was positioned palm up which positions the knuckles directly toward the chin of your opponent but I think it also has some defensive utility, giving your arm better mobility for blocking.

Honestly I've gotta say this is where traditional karate never failed me. We did a lot of heavy bareknuckle sparring or kumite- we all got really good at rooting deep and parrying at a mid range. I even remember watching exchanges between sensei sometimes and it felt like a back and forth kungfu movie fight where no one got hit until one big shot got sunk in(obviously a few seconds exaggerated to minutes by my younger mind in awe at the speed and power , which honestly when I look back at footage now- a bunch of competitive kickboxing under my belt- is still really impressive). Its a really useful technique to have in your arsenal in combination with everything else in thise video.

I feel like learning Kung Fu and tae Kwon do in the past prepared me for Muay Thai with small gloves. I've always felt like forearm blocks were more secure than glove blocks, even when using big gloves, so nothing really changes there. Also I am a grabby boi who likes to sneak punches through guards.
@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935

Awesome video. I do like the smaller gloves cuz I am a grabby boy. But I did notice the difference in protection from lack of surface area. So I actually try to train with both. Some days big gloves, other days little gloves, and occasionally I still hit the heavybag with no gloves. Definitely do more flamethrower videos. How can you not? Maybe see what items would be good/bad against a flamethrower. Either for defense, or say a hypothetical burning building with a similar sized backdraft. Last clip at the end was funny.

In the 70s and 80s we used to go to other gyms/dojos/kwoons and train for a month or two with them if their instructors were willing. It was the day of "every man is his own style' thinking and was a big departure from the traditional study one system only. For the first couple of sessions, until we got the lay of the land, we would leave our larger gloves like Jhoon Rhee Saf-T-Chops or 16 oz boxing gloves at home and go with only Everlast bag gloves. The smaller gloves were good if things got rough............... It was kind of a crummy thing to do but we only hit hard if they were trying to rough us up. If everyone played nicely then so did we.

5:10 as a newishbie I use a guard I learnt a while ago where you place both hands on your forehead(edit simular to what he mentioned later in the video) one on top of the other and use your elbows and forearms and move them by moving your hands around your head it works for body shots too but not brill but you don't need a guard to take a body shot as long as you know how to take them

I prefer MMA gloves for all training, I really do not like the way Boxing gloves positions your grip like a C, with the thumb resting on top. Even with wraps my hands hurt. My hands never hurt with MMA gloves. I like a nice tight packed fist, with thumb locking the knuckles in place. It's closer to bare knuckles, which is most likely how a person will be equipped in a self defense situation.
