"Time passes after the events of the Namek Arc and everyone goes on with their lives. The peace ends abruptly when Frieza, now a cyborg, arrives to exact his revenge for his defeat. Before the Z-Fighters can confront him, a mysterious teenager named Trunks intercepts and easily beats him, revealing he too is a Super Saiyan. After Goku arrives back on Earth, Trunks reveals he's from the future and that a major threat is on the horizon in the form of androids that will kill the Z-Warriors and decimate the Earth. Goku won't even be able to help as he dies from a disease before their arrival though Trunks has brought a cure to prevent such a fate. With this, the Z-Warriors get to work training in the hope to counteract the threat. But there turns out to be some unexpected surprises that even Trunks was unaware of leading the Z-Warriors to face their greatest threat yet."

This fight is so iconic because it's one of the rare times where the fight was dead even. The key difference was that 17 had infinite stamina, so Piccolo didn't have the luxury of a battle of atrition. It kept me on my toes as a kid.

I personally love this fight because it's like it shows how each character is starting off strong and getting more desperate and angry too. Starting off with elaborate attacks and blows, energy blast, good blocks, the works. Then towards the end, they just start gut checking each other over and over, like they are too tired for their usual martial arts and just resort to body blows, and can't even be bothered to defend, they just HOPE the other guy will go down, it's great.

On that point about showing a characters identity through how they fought, one thing I noticed as a kid was how rage-filled Tien's fighting style was when he was first introduced pause on a frame of him punching and he's always tweaking looking like he genuinely wants to break the person he's fighting against. Well, I guess Yamcha was actually broken lmao

One reason why the airport fight from Civil War was so good is because you have a dozen heroes fighting with their own style and character. Even the brawlers (Cap, Bucky, T’Chala) all fight differently.

Yeah, now it's reserved for the movies and key Super characters. Beerus Whis and Broly have very unique fighting styles compared to the more run of the mill now ki based styles. Hit as well was a breath of fresh air, which is why he's a fan favorite. "This is the stance" being so iconic to this day. But Super did pick up on how boring the fights were getting. It's why Trunks uses his sword rather than just generic fists and blasts like everyone else. It's a full part of his fighting style now rather than him beating 1 guy with a sword and never using one again cause it broke. Gohan not really knowing how to fight and using wrestling moves helped a lot in Super Hero. He never trains and isn't a martial artist. So, it wouldn't make sense for him to fight like a martial artist.

I haven't seen all of Dragon Ball, but what you said about fighting styles being unique to each character as a result of their formal training and personal development is absolutely what I think Dragon Ball as a series needed. Sorry if this is a long comment but what you said is ABSOLUTELY vital. I think it all goes back to the introduction of power levels. Raditz's number was bigger than Goku and Piccolo's despite their training and unique skillsets, so it took clever tactics to defeat him. I feel like once power levels were introduced, the idea that your strength isn't about your skillset or training, but is a statistic that can be accurately measured, the idea of martial arts became less and less important over time. Here is how I think that could've been avoided while adding to the series' martial arts themes. Power levels are measured by the Frieza Force, and are a manifestation of the caste system enforced by Frieza and his underlings like the Saiyans. Low-born warriors like Raditz and Kakarot are viewed as weak because their numbers are lower at birth. Kakarot's power level was far below Raditz', but as he grew, he got stronger, and his power level increased. I think that power levels should have been a way to show the Frieza Force was obsessed with pure brute ability, and not technique, and by the end, it should have been established that ultimately, power levels are false. What if Frieza's race developed the power level system as a way to decrease the likelihood of anyone trying to rise above their station? Like, Goku was a low-level warrior who through skill eventually became strong enough to defeat Frieza. I always thought power levels didn't really matter, but when you see things like Frieza having 120,000,000 versus like, Tien, you think that gap could almost never be bridged because it's not about Tien versus Frieza's combat experience or knowledge of martial arts, it's just that Frieza has the bigger number. Obviously Saiyan-saga Tien versus Frieza max power is an absurd comparison, but I feel like an extreme example helps show how power levels made strength less about your knowledge and more about who is "stronger" because their number is bigger. And later it gets absurd, like what's Golden Frieza's power level? The scale is poorly-defined so you see people in the versus community struggling to place any label on Goku's newest Hyper-Super-Ultra Omega Instinct Saiyan God 5 form or whatever he unlocks. Transformations and absorption didn't help, either. Piccolo becomes strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Frieza because he absorbs Nail and just "becomes stronger." But what does that mean, really? Did he get some special insight into Nail's techniques or some fighting style that would catch Frieza off-guard? When a Saiyan gets a zenkai boost, HOW do they get "stronger?" Why is oozaru "ten times stronger" than a normal Saiyan? I think by making people "stronger" based on transformations and numbers, it really devalued all the martial arts training and that's why Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu and all the rest got left behind. I think the reason the earthlings never really caught up was because power levels and the zenkai boost and Super Saiyan negated the martial arts aspect in favor of "number go up." It's been a while since I've actually seen the original show so I'm sorry if I get stuff wrong. I just feel like they should have focused more on how martial arts and developing unique techniques are what decides victory in combat, and not that one person is just definitively "stronger."

PREACHING right here Don't apologize for writing the at all, couldn't have put it any better if I tried. I love the series, but the power creep definitely seemed to push toriyama into a writing corner that he wasn't entirely sure how to get himself out of without continuously upping the stakes. And when this is how you compensate, it has absolutely no choice but to lead you into some absolute goofiness and making half your cast useless unless you HARD pivot

I totally agree. Ironically, the only human to remain relevant to any degree has been Krillin....and I'd say it's because of his unique techniques. Solar Flare and Destructo-Disc are still affecting battles. Sadly, he's the only human z-fighter that's been able to remain relevant at all. He even played a (very limited) role in the battle against Super Cell in Dragon Ball Super Hero. I wish they did this the other human z-fighters.

I agree with you 100%. If they ever reboot DB-DBZ, they need to pay special attention to fighting style/combat movements. They could say so much through that with out having to write a line of dialogue. Plus I am a sucker for seeing examples of master/trainer lineage, like the brief moment where Future Trunks and Gohan use Masenko in the DBZ Broly movie, a technique made by Piccolo. Shit like that. You describing the idea that Gohan’s fighting style should be Piccolo’s demon style as a foundation, later refined by Goku’s traditional martial arts, accentuated by Gohan’s intelligence. That shit would be so cool to see fleshed out.

17 and 18 are actually probably the best example of characters traits and background playing into how they fight. Their infinite energy really shows itself, especially in Super. They’re steady expanding energy in ways other fighters just wouldn’t in a close match. And they’re always more competent when fighting alongside one another. 17 gets another point when he fights because, at least in the tournament of Power he fights like a Wolf hunting when he has the advantage against those animal styled fighters early in the ToP

Your tangent about fighting style not reflecting the characters as the series progressed was serious food for thought. I always felt like at beginning of DBZ and the early movies, Piccolos deadliness as a fighter was more expressed, like even if you were on par in strength with him, you can't afford to take 1 or 2 good hits from him. Although I like the 17 vs Piccolo fight, you get anything but that feeling on display.

Big fax on the whole perspective of character identity with fighting. As the series progressed it really came down to the element of who was the more overall talented fighter. Elements of experience and fighting styles got b left by the way side since it didn’t matter if one guy didn’t have the strength or speed somewhere within the range of the other guy . Some of those elements Kind of came back towards the end with Goku vs Uub. Hopefully it continues to show in the newer series.

That ain't the only reason though. Cell traveled into the main timeline a whole year before Future Trunks did, and his arrival caused some butterfly effects/time discrepancies. That's why Mecha Frieza & King Cold arrived on Earth like 3 hours earlier than they were supposed to. In the original timeline, Goku arrives on Earth at around the same time as they do and he kills them. But then there's also the fact that Future Trunks arrived too and gave Goku medicine to live through the heart virus _and_ alerted them all about the androids several years before they were set to arrive so they can train for it instead of the android attack catching them all by surpise during a period of peace and being immediately killed off. I believe it was said that Dr Gero even programed them differently in the main timeline or something like that, likely due to all the changes that happened that would have affected Dr. Gero's plans in some way; it's even sorta implied that Dr. Gero never turned himself into an android in the future and never made Android 19.

About the winner, I think Piccolo would’ve won if he used the Light Grenade. However something to keep in mind is that the Android has unlimited stamina. Either way this scrap is legendary and I’ll tuning in next Sunday to see you cover the antics of the sus cicada sucker himself, Cell

This is forever be hands down my favorite DBZ fight in the entire series...sweet, short and no wasting time directly to the POINT, also the best choreography from any DBZ of GT or Super fight, not going to say the OG Dragon Ball as I still think in terms of fight choreography the OG DB is the best, but this one is the closest to that period of time....I love DBZ and all but what you said in that rant is sooo true, I wish they would have bring it in some sort or martial art consultant so they could made better and more unique fighting styles for each character, something like Avatar The Last airbender and Legend of Korra did fantastically well, have each character have a specific fighting style that was unique for them, but still overall DBZ have good fights and this one for me take the cake in term of just good fight choreography, plus is my boy Piccolo who sadly after this will take like 20 years to return to form and have to be in a film for that to happen.

Another kick ass fight in the Dragon Ball serie is the one of Goku vs Piccolo in Dragon Ball. Oh man, there you can see Goku’s brilliance as a martial artist, where he (*spoiler alert*) does a Kamehameha with his feet (*spoiler ends*). Truly worth rewatching it.

I watch to laugh but dam.. you have perfectly explained how much of a shift DB to DBZ was.. not only the martial arts difference but DB was an adventure manga. The shift to focus on fighting took some of the charm. No one has a unique style of fighting, just a few special techniques. Keep up the awesome work bro!

Piccolo and 17 just going nuts on each other until Cell shows-up to kill steal in the next episode. The speech at 7:44 to 9:46 is what I would sometimes think when it comes to the fighting. Tons of fighting styles the characters could do but it's mostly the same punches and kicks. I know it's easier to animate but still. Seeing more styles of fighting on top of using their unique moves could've been sweet.

I absolutely agree bro like, think about future trunks learning combat from future gohan, a mix of demon clan style and because goku dies in that timeline, by the time he comes back from our time line having trained in vegetas crazy space boxing 😂 i would definitely agree a bit of a missed opportunity, but hey still holds up till this day as a good ass show!

Completely agree about individual attributes being lost as the series continues. Soon, it's just one brawl after another with very little identity compared to the early Dragon Ball tournaments.

That speech on the lack of technique variety, and overall lack of variety in fights in the series was so on point, cuz its completely true. Outside of a few exceptions, most characters movesets are throwing hands, and a bunch of different colored energy blasts that all do the same thing. Is there really a functional difference between a Kamehameha and a Final Flash? Most of the more unique stuff, like the Kienzan or Yamcha's Spirit Ball is limited to side characters we rarely ever see fight. Piccolo has the really fuckin cool Makankosappo, but only uses it once in all of Z despite it being so iconic and a unique move. Compare Z to something like Naruto, where different techniques and fighting styles can make a lot of difference. Just to pull a fight out of my ass, look at Tsunade vs Kabuto. By his own admission, all it would take is one good punch from Tsunade to put Kabuto in a flatline. However, Kabuto was able to get around that by using his chakra scalpels, meaning he could do intetnal damage to the much stronger Tsunade just by touching her with light taps. So rather than trying to box it up and get put in a box, he focused almost completely on avoiding Tsunades fists, and touched wherever he could to do internal damage, cutting her muscles and ligament to gradually weaken and slow her down. Something you'd absolutely never see in DragonBall. Better example, just look at how different people fight in Hunter x Hunter. Gon, Killua, and Kurapika all fight completely differently, with entirely different moves and fighting styles. All the Phantom Troupe members are mostly completely different as well. Uvogin fights nothing like Machi, and Machi is nothing like Kalluto.

10:00 All I can say is that the video games somewhat redeem the characters by making them all behave differently when it comes to their fighting techniques and hand to hand. DBFZ really does a great job of it and I hope Tenkaichi 4 follows suit.

That point about the way these dawgs bark different and bite the same is straight facts. I've always found it annoying and unengaging to watch people who've trained in martial arts for decades fighting with the same level of skill as an 8 year old who got a little over a year's worth of practice in. Cell of all people was the most infuriating for me, he could've had so many different styles tactics and strategies but instead he just punches and kicks just the same as colonel sanders lookin ass woula. Tons of different factors in real fights are completely ignored too. Things like height, weight, reach, hair, prior injuries, etc, they're either completely ignored/forgotten about, or mentioned at the start and then treated the same as just a slight setback that matters for only the first 3-second clash. If we could see more real martial arts coming back to the series, it would honestly get me back into db big time, cause right now, i like shows that mention the actual martial arts and sciences/histories behind them (like kengan ashura) way more.

I think its safe to say 17 would have won if the fight conituned. Its pretty clear that 17 and Piccolo were equal at this point but there's one thing that gives 17 a masive advantage and its the fact that he has infinite energy.

I agree 💯 percent! And to be honest I don't think he would've killed him either as the androids of this time-line didn't want to kill anyone they just wanted to test their metal against Goku. I feel like he would've clutched a W and let piccolo live still.

I think what gets lost in translation from manga to anime is that they do a lot of different attacks but I feel you. In the manga they do hand to hand. The anime was from the 90s, they cut a lot of corners and reused the same frames and attacks over and over. The video games and some of Super do a better job of showing all the different fighting styles each fighter has.
