Compare Big Green Egg vs Weber Summit Charcoal Grill vs Kamado Joe w/ pros & cons of each grill. In depth smoker review & how to decide. Hope this helps!
In this new format I'm calling "Grill Me!!!" (because, why not?!?) I talk about the number 1 question I get...and I get it all the time. "If I could only have one grill or smoker, what would it be?"
I know this is long but you will never find this much information in one place that will help you with your buying decision. Here is the table of contents in case you want to reference this later.

**Additional Disclosure:
I have mentioned all this stuff before in videos but in case this is the first video of mine you seen, I’ll go through it again here. I was not paid to recommend any of the products I talked about in this video. My Slow N Sear was provided by Adrenaline Barbecue Company because I do video work for their channel. (They don’t ask me or expect me to mention the Slow N Sear on this channel. I do it because I love it.) The Kamado Joe was sent to me by Kamado Joe for free but I wasn’t really thinking about that when I made this list of recommendations (If I had been, I would have mentioned it.) I purchased my Weber Summit Charcoal Grilling Center, 26 Weber kettle, and my Big Green Egg with my own money. (Though where do I sign up to get on that gravy train, know what I mean?!? lol) This is probably more information than you care about, but I like to make sure you know all this because I feel it’s important when making recommendations. It sucks to find out somebody is getting paid to make recommendations AFTER you buy a product. That's not what's happening here, but I still feel like it's better to over disclose than under disclose. Long story short, I've got nothing to hide. I'm just trying to help.

Justin, I've looked at probably 30 different grills over the last two months, in person, online, forums, etc. I've checked through just about all the top quality manufacturers. I was drawn to pellet cookers because of the "all-in-one" concept that tries (struggles) to bridge the flavor of charcoal with the simplicity of gas. While I was drawn to the searing capability of the MAK 2-Star, I struggled with the thought of spending that much on a grill and ultimately decided that I love that perfect flavor charcoal imparts. That brought me to Kamados and the WSCG. After watching hours of your videos on each, I'll be ordering the WSCG after I move in 2 weeks and I'm pretty confident in my decision. I almost never leave comments, but really wanted to reach out and say thank you for your transparency, information, insight, opinions, and passion about smoking, grilling, and outdoor cooking. You've really helped my process and inspire some great cook ideas. Thank you so much!

Thanks - just bought the Summit w/o the table. Love it after 2 cooks for all the reasons mentioned. Had a BGE Large for 10 years good but hard to clean, move, clean, heavy and had to buy all the accessories to get to the same level of functionality. Agree Weber lowers the price about 30% and they take market share. Also had Traeger electric - ok but not the same as charcoal and wood chunks. So very pleased to be back to charcoal with the Summit. Thank again, Mark.

It could have been worse, say just 2/3 of one buttcheek or something. I liked the format, though I do think that you would come across as more decisive if you took more time to extract and organize all your thoughts before filming. I would probably have to sit down in a fairly quiet place with a cup of coffee and write it out on paper first. Then edit it until I was happy, but that's just me. It may just be a holdover from writing (yes, I was published twice in the nineties). That being said, why not make "Grill me!" a regular feature. Out of respect for Troy, I wouldn't post it on Thursdays, but Mondays or Tuesdays might be good. You could cover viewer questions or maybe even do a cooking experiment - regular vs. reverse searing, does spritzing on a long cook actually accomplish anything, does adding wood chunks/chips on a short cook (such as steak or burgers) actually enhance the flavor - these are just a few suggestions. Stay well, keep smiling, and I look forward to the regular features. Ken

Thanks for the feedback, Ken. Troy wouldn't care if I did something like this on Thursdays. It's just not in his DNA to let stuff like that bother him. I probably will do stuff like this from time to time but it won't be a weekly them. Maybe every couple of months. Will see. Thanks for you input though.

When I bought my ceramic grill, I did the research and came up with the same stuff. BGE put out an awesome product, in 1972. Of course since then they have done nothing to improve it until they started losing market share. Add in that everything is an add on and that showed me that I would never own a BGE unless they changed drastically. I bought a Kamado Joe and have been thrilled with it. I have coworkers that would only ever buy an egg because it's the name. They are the ones that get the name brand of everything, just because it's the big name, not because it's a better product.

Just because everything is an add-on doesn't me and you shouldn't have gotten an egg The egg has a lifetime warranty on all ceramics the kamado Joe doesn't I work at a business where we are a dealer for both big green egg and kamado Joe the egg has a far better warranty and is made out of far superior materials meaning it is 100% ceramic The kamado Joe is only 30% ceramic and the rest clay and other mixtures both cook relatively the same but both will not last the same amount of time

I like this freestyle format! My first "real grill" was an old school Weber performer (with stainless cart) for $20 or $25 bucks at a yard sale 20 years ago. It's still going strong. I agree with the ceramics being fragile in the Kamados. I had decided my next big grill purchase would be between the new, larger PK Grill and the Blaze Kamado. It looks like I'll be throwing the Weber Summit Charcoal into the mix as well. Keep up the great videos.

I bought all three grills and feel the same way you do. You made very valid points. After my Big Green Egg experience I'll probably never buy another one. Both Big Green Egg and my dealer customer support has been awful. I'm liking my Weber Summit better than my Kamado Joe and I like my Kamado Joe better than my Big Green Egg. Where the Summit is really good too is high temperature pizzas!!! No gasket will to fry and it cools off much faster than both the Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe. I gave up trying to cook high temperature pizzas on my Big Green Egg, the first time I took it past 450° my gasket fried.

Yeah, I took a lot of crap for this video. Until somebody has had all three, they don't really understand. It's hard to get passed the look and feel of ceramic and see the bigger picture. I still say any of those grill a person could buy and be happy with (in the case of BGE if they had a good dealer.) Thanks for watching, Joe.

GR8 vid.. I've gone the route of the chargriller akorn and auto kamado... with a few mods I fabricated myself I feel I got the right all around grill/smoaker.. I did use parts and ideas from building UDS cookers .. even used the bottom of a cannibalized kettle to make a slow roller for my akorn. I'm always thinking. Lol..the only downside would be cooking space.. other than that. It's my preferred choice.. I liked ur insight and input.. keep these vids coming

Love your honesty. I have 3 different Webers ( genesis gas, smoky mountain, and kettle). Just bought the kettle this spring and it's fast become my favorite. Like you said it does everything pretty well. From burgers to pork shoulder. No cash or room for a summit charcoal, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't love one.

Thanks, Jeff. I totally hear you. Like I said I think most people are normal and don't need to spend upwards of $2K on a cooker when they can get just about as much done on a versatile kettle. You're combination of cookers covers more ground than the Summit does anyways so looks like you are set to me. lol. Justin

It’s funny after watching a bazillion grilling and smoking videos and having grilled and smoked a long time as well, I think for a starter, going with something that serves a couple masters isn’t a bad idea. The Webber kettle for example will grill direct, or indirect anything you want. It also hangs in the smoking department. It also appears that the level of attention required is the same as with things more specifically designed for smoking. It’s just where there’s a will, there’s a way. I think if you don’t have much money and would like to dip your toe, a kettle of some sort may be a fine place to start? See if you like it, and if you love it, keep going. Let what your using grow as your skill set and finances grow. The is a great channel. Thank you for all the posts and extremely useful advice.

I know this is older, but thanks a lot for this analysis! First of all thanks a lot Justin for the extensive explanation. It's a great help, I'm right not in the process of deciding what of those I should get. It's invaluable to have someone who both knows what they're doing AND also happened to use all the kettles over a longer period of time. I can't say I'm unhappy with you picking the WSC first, it's also the one I'll most likely get. Here in Germany, the WSC is also pretty good value (I mentioned that in a comment that was way to long on another video of yours), selling at 2k and 2.5k with table. I know it sounds very expensive, but that's due to shipping, customs and sales tax. The other name brand Kamados are even more expensive. I don't know that the Weber is the best value (I think everybody oughta figure that out themselves), but it's pretty good for what you get. I even saw an offer for about 1.6k. Including the above mentioned factors for importing the WSC, that's pretty close to your ideal price of 1.2k and 1.5k respectively. Oh and one last thing. Really appreciate you still finding the time to answer as many comments as you can (which is almost all of them) even though you're past the 10k subscriber mark.

I can see you have had issues with the BGE. Me on the other hand have had none, and I have two large and one mini-max. The past 8 years, not one issue with an accident or a defect. I guess it all depends on how the dice roll. I have a nice flat concrete slab to roll on, so no issues there and I have a storage area for my plate setters and grates to keep them form becoming a victim. I think that your video is great for your opinion on the three, it is surely helpful for those on the fence. I appreciate you making this. Cheers!

I've owned a large BGE for 9 years. Busted a dome about 5 years ago due to the substandard hinge and hardware, $300 to replace. Now, I'm finally ready to replace my cracked firebox and my dealer is giving me a hard time on covering due to not having the original receipt. Recently I'd been getting ready to add an XL to my collection, looks like I will be looking into the Big Joe and the Weber Summit. Not sure any local vendors sell the Weber though.

Hi Gabriel, Yeah, I've heard that story several times, unfortunately. I've never understood why you have to keep your receipt AFTER you register the grill. It's not that I think the BGE warranty is worthless or anything, but it's much more limited than most people realize when they buy the cooker which is frustrating because that's often the main reason people use to in their finds to justify the purchase. ("Yeah, it's expensive, but at least it has a lifetime warranty.") Justin

An interesting video and I have a short attention span. I've cooked on Weber Kettles most of my life. Now I'm using the Kamado Big Joe (I tell non-grill people I have a "Big Red Egg"). I looked at the BGE, but by the time you get to adding all the accessories, its $200-300 more than the joe. And I hate to be nickel and dimed. You're paying premium money for a grill, it should come from the factory with all the bells and whistles. I purchased my Joe from a Costco special event and it came complete. I love the divide and conquer cooking system. This is something that BGE does not offer and I love (probably due to my years cooking on a kettle). The Joe will probably be the last grill/smoker I ever buy. It should last long enough to see the end of my grilling career. If a chunk of a soviet satellite falls from space and breaks it, I'm going to take that as an omen that I should quit grilling. Now the bad news. I'm 55. I only have 1 more year of watching your channel and then I'll be too old...

Took a vacation off from work and it feels like all I have been doing is watching babybackmaniac, troy cooks, atbbq and killer hogs.. How do you like your komodo kamado compared to these kamados in the video? I haven't watched a video yet of you using it. Also, I fully agree with what you said. If Weber lowered the price on the summit it would absolutely corner the market. I bought a KJBJ2 and a KJJR for less than the summit was going for at the time. If it was the same or cheaper than the kjbj it would be in my backyard right now for sure.

I sold it. The Komodo Kamado is nicer and built out of better materials but I prefer the more traditional size and shape of the ones I mentioned. I just find them more practical and easier to use day-to-day. It's little things like tool hooks, emptying ash, distance between the firebox and the main grate, and what's required to split the firebox (and other stuff like that) that makes me prefer them....and (to use your example) for the price you could buy all 3 kamado Joes AND the summit and still have money leftover for the price of the KK. It didn't make sense for me to keep it when I wasn't completely in love with it.

there is a reason the Weber has been so popular.... I just bought a used Kamado after using weber for decades.... only reason is I wanted more stable temps for more complex smokes... the weber is stable as long as its warm out and not windy... the kamado is rock solid

I have to say I love the look of the summit, I love the silver handle and Ash catcher, it's large round and if it could smile, it would. Makes me feel happy 😊 I have a kettle mastertouch, a smokey hour a smaller kamado and was thinking of the summit, think my husband would like the look but he'd go mad if I get another one. The gas lighter on the summit ruins the look of it, you have this beautiful grill with a big silver box stuck on the side to light it. Throw in a good torch. It's there a rotisserie for the summit of us I think I'll add to my little weber family. Thank you for great videos

Justin - My second comment. I think what you say about the BGE company being complacent also can be said about Weber and it's Smokey Mountain design team. They have a great concept, but as a smoker it uses too much charcoal because of all the leaks and the stupid concept of heating water to lower temp's. I can't figure out why the lips of the outside rings are designed to catch water instead of shed water, or why Weber hasn't upgraded it's flimsy door.

Levi & I were out at the hardware store just a few days ago. He noticed the Mini Egg (he really wants one), and I noticed the price. I think "Are you freaking kidding me?" was what I said... Out loud... For everyone within earshot to hear. $400.00 for something smaller than a simple Jumbo Joe. Nope, I'm really not a fan of BGE (but I do kinda' like their salt & pepper shakers). 😆

Does that mean I am 14 years out of my prime? LOL. lol - I'm 46 and the "Wife Question" was exactly how the decision was made for our household. I was leaning heavy for the Joe, but she liked the BGE because it "fit our backyard more than the red". Wasn't even thinking about that. We ended up getting it with the teak table option as, "it fits the whole backyard theme better, too". Really wasn't considering that, at all. So, now I have the a better setup than I had been practicing the speech for in the first place -- all because I asked her, "which one do you like from a look & feel prospective"?

I know I’m a lot late to the party on this one…. I have ALWAYS wanted a Kamado cooker. I have been cooking on Weber products for over thirty years. I currently have a 22” performer AND a Lone Star 24x48 with some upgrades. I’m looking HARD at the smaller Summit. To me and my situation it makes more sense to have the smaller version. What I really want to know is, what features of the grill itself do I loose when I go to the little one?? Can I still use a temp controller? Are there other things I can or cannot do? That’s what I really want to know to make a informed choice. Thanks JH.

Great video as always! I work at a BBQ/Grill restaurant and we use the latest version of the Kamado Joe Big Joe(actually we use two of them) and about those fireboxes in the Kamado Joe... they truly are great and definitely an improvement over the old ones BUT there is one problem about them and it's the metal ring that holds it together - it bends and warps and when that hapens you have to bend it back in place or your firebox will fall apart. And yes I realize that in the restaurant they go through heavy use and that the grill is at 250-300 degrees Celsius for about 10 to 12 hours a day but still I just wish the ring would be made out of thicker, more durable metal so that it wouldn't warp! Anyways I just thought I would let you know what can happen after heavy usage Also the gasket came off on one of the grills

That's great info! I think restaurant use is a great way to test them. I kind feel the same way about display models in stores. When I see little crap broken off, you can say "Well, it's a display." or you can say "That's what 10 years of use will look like." lol. The current pricing is $2150 for a Weber Summit Kamado S6 and $1250 for the E6 - so it costs $900 for a cart?!! I wonder how they justify that much price uplift for the cart (and the propane lighter). This is the grill I will probably buy, but I am not likely to pay the extra $900 for the cart! Do you have any information on why they priced it so high and is it worth it? Or should I just spend $300-500 for a standalone cart/table?

Thanks for the good comparison video! Really interesting content and I like the format. In my opinion the best thing about your channel is that you are giving honest opinions to your viewers. Also when it might not be the easiest thing to do like in Weber Smoke Fire videos.. I really appreciate it! 👍 I have at the moment only WSM. Love that in smoking, but planning to get also something for searing / direct grilling. My opinions are Weber Master-Touch GBS Premium E-5775 or Summit. Master touch would be way cheaper that Summit and I could continue smoke with WSM, but on the other hand Summit could do both.. Hmm, I'll continue whatching your videos during the winter time (here in Finland) and make the decision after few months. So keep on going and good luck for the 2020! 👍

Justin, I liked the format and your analysis of the grills/companies. You're so right about BGE Company being the slow moving market leader taking their customers for granted. It's much more fun to get onboard with the innovative upstart companies and all their product improvements over the old standard ceramic. I agree with you about the Summit. An excellent product, I just wish they priced it down where it should be. But even given it's inflated price, it's my next acquisition target (perhaps that means it's properly priced after all or I wouldn't go for it?). I've lost two BGE's over the years to mishaps. One by a mover where it arrived in pieces. And once when I was rolling it and it caught a sidewalk bump and tipped over. Ceramic sucks at times like those. Summit it is.

Thanks Richard, People who haven't owned them probably thought I was making that up so I really appreciate the comment. It's also exactly why I mentioned the way the cart works when moving it. No "handler" needed to prevent it from tipping. That was another thing that I noticed about Kamado Joe right way. Instead of selling you a part to keep it from tipping, they just made a better cart! but I felt like I had already made my point and there was no need to dwell on it. lol.

Do you like the Weber kamado or the lone star Santa Maria better. Trying to decide which one of the two to get and figured you can help with your experience from both. Thanks

Thanks Louis. Yeah, I think people should get what they really want. It may not end up being what they thought it would be but at least they won't always wonder. Plus, it could be amazing! lol Justin

I have a 22inch Weber Kettle and a 14inch WSM. I love the Weber products and I keep waiting on the Summit to drop in price but, i don't think thats going to happen. Great video and very informative, have a good day.

I don't think it's going to drop in price either, man. It's not Weber's way of doing things. It probably won't go up in price either though. They seem to find price points and stick with them until a major revision. Justin

Justin I enjoyed your video very much, I bought my kamado Joe classic last year and one of the main reasons was the Big Green Egg people simply didn't give you the same options and versatility, and they want you to purchase every little accessory that should come with the grill and that your seems really chintzy I think you're right they're going to put themselves out of the number one slot for sales. one last thing I watched you and T-Roy together doing the Thursday video and you guys comment about how the kamado didn't seem to smoke very well at lower temperatures I was shocked I had absolutely no problem whatsoever getting excellent smoke on my Meats and everything turns out fantastic in part due to your and Troy's instructional videos so again I must thank you guys for that anyway to keep up the good work.

Thanks Kevin, It's not so much that there isn't smoke flavor as much as there isn't as much as with some other types of cookers. Still tastes great though and it's definitely great at holding low temps. Thank you for the kind words, my friend. I really appreciate you telling me that. Justin

Respectfully Justin more of something isn't necessarily better, for me it comes down to Personal Taste if I add more smoke wood i get more smoke in the beginning when I had my kamado I added too much and had more smoke and I had to back it off, the way you made it sound in your Thursday talk was discouraging to people that might be considering buying a kamado because they don't smoke as well, that's my only concern with this reply is you have to be careful not to give people the wrong impression you're in a position of influence and people respect the power of your words, that being said I love you and Troy's show very much and I will continue to watch it. Keep up the good work.

Kevin, I'll have to go back and watch it again. I don't remember exactly what I said. I feel the question was from someone complaining about not getting enough smoke out of their kamado and I was listing ways to improve on it. One of my suggestions was just to recognize that kamados strengths are they are good at everything but not necessarily the best at anything. So there are dedicated pizza cookers and smokers that do a better job at their tasks but can't do everything like a kamado can. Dedicated smokers like stick burners would provide more smoke flavor for someone who feels like it's lacking. They are also typically bigger and can hold a lot more meat. That's not a knock against the kamado. It just is what it is. I love my kamados. I cook on them more than anything else.

@@BabyBackManiac I pulled the trigger.......Komado Joe Big Chef II and a Napoleon 500. My wife will like the blue and red lights on the Napoleon. I will also probably keep my old and beat up traeger. I love to deep smoke meats prior to throwing them onto charcoal or gas.

You mention the price of the summit and I agree, but have you ever tried a weber ranch? I seriously have no idea how they can justify the $1500 price on that thing. It's just a giant original series kettle

I agree, BGE was the top Dog and only Dog for years and they got complacent and comfortable and allowed the competition to make much needed improvements…while they did nothing. The awful thing is, they made a conscious decision not to make needed improvements because there was no competition…. And no reason to do the right thing. I have a large BGE but i wouldn’t buy another. I’m actually looking at the Weber summit and other brands. Thanks for your video.
