Saw P&G in a small club in 94, Zakk was playing the bullseye LP into a 2203 half stack with a few pedals on the floor. It was one of the hugest guitar sounds I've ever heard. I couldn't believe that tone was coming out of such a simple, almost "budget" rig.

my god, Zakk's comping was so creative, without leaving any emptiness putting in fills here and there between one riff and one chord. It's what you need when you have only one guitar in the band. Great great great comping. Too bad it stopped as soon as he started with BLS, where he fell into the cheap flat beer drinking metal crap and became a shadow of his former self. Great job with the sounds and the playing!!!

My favorite times in bands has always been as the only guitarist. It always forced me to come up with harmonically interesting ideas, and with the right bassist, you can really create textured compositions, regardless of genre.

Zakk's best tone was on the first two Ozzy albums. I remember reading an interview with Zakk when he was recording No Rest. At that point he had not settled on using an LP and mentioned experimenting with strats loaded with Duncan Hot Rails. Eventually he settled on the LP with the 81/85 set. I've been using EMGs myself, along with other pickups, since about '86. They do something very special to a guitar if that's what you're looking for. When it comes to clarity and response with high gain it's hard to beat an 81. He also mentioned the Lee Jackson Metaltronix amps and something about a Jubilee and Boss Distortion. I've always been a Jake fan, but I think Zakk held his own. I saw him a few times with Ozzy on No Rest and Tears. Great player with a very high fidelity live tone that emphasises his monstrous high speed alternate picking ability which is the main thing that sets him apart from most players.

interesting they used the Aphex Aural Exciter for the bottom end. i work at a local FM radio station and we still use the Aural Exciter but in the opposite application, to goose the highs. but not surprising at ALL. i have the 4210 model of the JCM800 combo and there is ZERO bottom end on that sucker

Miracle Man lead is where I learned down down up picking. Can't believe that was probably 20 years ago. And here I thought I was still "young". I remember Zakk had a video where he shows you how to play it, and then goes "...and that's Miracle Man", and that phrase became a running joke between my other guitar player/friend and myself. To this day, when one of us plays something that impresses the other, it's "..and that's Miracle Man" TLDR I'm old
