I love that Baymax doesn't suddenly become sentient, or develop a "soul". He is simply following his programming, just like any other machine, but because of his design and the fact that he is ridiculously advanced, to the point he is able to mimic human behavior makes it easy for us to get attached to him. While a lot of writers drop the ball with A.I characters, they nailed it here.

To add, the only reason there was no Marvel stinger is because Disney heavily modified the original story. Big Hero 6 was originally a subsidiary of the X-Men as most of the heroes were also mutants. Since this was before Disney bought Fox, Disney had to make a lot of changes to avoid running into issues with the X-Men IP.

A detail that goes unnoticed by a lot of people is during Baymax’s ultimate sacrifice. If you look into Hiro’s eyes, he doesn’t see Baymax, he sees Tadashi. Because in that moment, Hiro feels like he’s losing Tadashi all over again, since Baymax is the last gift Tadashi gave him. It’s a heartbreaking detail that takes an eagle eye or paused screen to see

I actually think "They died when I was three, remember?" is pretty good as far as "as you know" type exposition goes. Hiro's basically saying "why are you asking me what our parents would have thought, how would I know, I don't remember them." So the line conveys information to the audience while also delivering emotional damage to the recipient character.

All the while being shown how to appreciate beauty, life, and love through a naive robot. And Baymax is back in a short mini series!!
@lelandvaughan44292 жыл бұрын
Random Trivia!!!! Baymax says 'Falalalala' because his programming doesn't account for making random sounds, only language, so he just puts in some syllables instead. The scene where Hiro rides on Baymax and sees himself in the reflection is basically the same shot of Hiro on the back of Tadashi's moped. Honey Lemon's chemical purse has the periodic table on it, ya girl is doing high level chemical equations on the fly. I really love this movie. It's a movie about invention, creation, and innovation. It's about applying your knowledge in the best way possible. Having grown up in the US, I really wish I'd had some of the opportunities to apply my passions when I was young.

I remember distinctly how hard I took Tadashi's death and his mourning more than my brother when we saw this in theaters.. At the time he was still in university for a STEM job, working in similar scientific labs. We have a 12 year age gap between us, so I liked the dynamic Hiro and Tadashi had, it felt much more like us. My brother didn't realize why I had cried for a bit at his death until he asked afterwards why it him me more than him, and I had to explain how it gave me a look into a future where if my older brother, who is at a university lab most of the day dies in an accident, I wouldn't be able to cope with it. Anyways, we both love this movie, and the research into the science of everything should be the standard for other fiction out there. Cause it's cool.

But if I had a sibling and lost them I don't know what I'd do. Cause after all your siblings are there for you when your parents or guardians can't be. Initially, the origin of San Fransokyo was an "alternate universe" outcome of the real-life event of the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Japanese immigrants helped rebuild by contributing key Japanese building techniques that allowed the city to prevail in the face of the seismic events like never before (since, of course, Japan has dealt with earthquakes for far longer). San Francisco was renamed San Fransokyo in honor and recognition of it being a city reborn thanks to a combination of Japanese and American engineering skills. The floating things in the sky painted like fish are tethered wind turbines used to generate electricity. They are placed in the sky to capture the higher and more consistent wind speeds found at higher altitudes. These turbines are connected to the ground by tethers that transmit the electricity generated by the turbines.

The comic Big Hero 6 starts originally with Hiro being a super genius level fanboy of Sunfire the atomic fire powered Japanese X-Man who wanted to be a hero just like him. Sunfire at that point in the late 90’s was also basically the biggest and most well known Japanese Superhero in the canon of Marvel Comics. They had a single miniseries that introduced Hiro, Baymax, Go Go, and Honey Lemon and then they made a few other appearances in other comic series. Then they did a later miniseries/revamp 10 years after the first where all of the previously introduced characters starting looking more like their eventual movie counterparts and they also finally introduce both Wasabi and Fred to the team.

It's about the only thing I miss from that job.

Gotta give credit: Callaghan/Yokai is one of the most underappreciated animated villains imho. The dude has an absolutely BADASS design and power, his backstory and motivation make complete sense, and his overall goal are an interesting take in a superhero movie: he doesnt even remotely care about the main characters/heros. They are basically just annoying nuisances to him throughout the entire movie. Also, his voice actor kills it. "I want my DAUGHTER BACK!". That delivery man. You can hear the deep pain, but also the the boundless, barely contained rage in his voice.

I don't know if anyone had said this yet, I haven't seen anyone talk about it, but I remember reading a lore explanation from the creators when the concept images were release before this movie came out. They explained that at some point Sanfancisco had a huge econimic crisis at the same time a massive earthquake hit the city and destroyed everthing. The land was bought by Japanese businessmen and rebuilt by combining the efforts and style of American culture and Japanese culture. Also some changes from the Comic, Baymax is a robot but is designed to look like a dragon. In the movie he was redsigned to have an Iron man influance. Wasabi is a combination of the Charcters Silver Sameria and Wasabi No Ginger. Fred's chacter is not form the comics but is a combination of the Superhero Sunfire (Being able to shoot fire) and the original design for Baymax (being a dragon creature). and Honey Lemon is a James Bond like spy in the comics with an bottomless purse where she keeps all her gadgets.

fun fact!: someone's probably mentioned it in the comments, but the reason the city is like this is because, in-universe canonically, there was a huge earthquake that basically ruined the city of SanFran, and it was Japanese immigrants that helped rebuild the city, influencing the city's new architecture, landscape, and culture. the creators of the film wanted to create a SanFran that was a blending of Japanese and American vibes to parallel Hiro's biracial background, as well as showing the diversity of the city through the rest of the cast (black, korean, hispanic, and white). also! Big Hero 6 is a old marvel comic, that's why Stan Lee appears in the film. however, the old comic is mmmm bad to put it simply, with orientalism and such. this film really only took the character names, the concept of a robot, and a boy genius and made their entire own thing for the film. DEFINITELY a face-lift glow up from the source material.

●28:06 _"Why is Stan Lee in it?"_ I think *Big Hero 6* was a Marvel comic book about 15 years before the movie. ●15:52 _"Shifting gears means you can go faster."_ Yes, by downshifting and pouring on the gas, you can go faster. __ 🚗 *Edit:* I just realized, the video has been posted for a while. I imagine someone mentioned both of these things already. 🤷🏼♂️ Oh, well.

Big Hero 6 is loosely inspired by a series of Marvel comics based on the same name. The team's abilities reflect their og counterparts but, if you get familiar with both, you can definitely see where Disney took some liberties.
