G,day every one,
This episode was a hard one to put together, on one side I felt we got a lot accomplished, on the other i had the lowest of low days.
I would like to thank trogon fiberglass for their help and highly recommend you check them out for your next composite project.

When you take a boat out of the water you always discover new problems/issues. Don't let it get at you. You're moving forward in big steps and all the hard work will pay off. When she's back in the water and ready to go, you'll enjoy the trips.

@@HarpersShed Yeah... I have a boat too. There's always some sort of maintenance to be done. But that's okay because I spend the whole summer holidays enjoying the boat and only a few days here and there doing some work. I guess your main problem was time. Everything had to be done in that one week.

That's some solid work for five days. The crispy glass mean you probably had a dry bond because either the wood absorbed too much resin, or you didn't pre-wet the surface. You should wet it out and let it cure, then wet it out again before putting glass on to give yourself the best opportunity to adhere.
@HarpersShed
@HarpersShed Жыл бұрын
The sections that lifted were due to me stepping on it accidentally when we left for the day. All the sections were pre wetted before the glass went down. I will confess I'm not a composite expert though 👍

Hi Mate luv watching your videos, Firstly do not be worried about a bit of salt water in the bilge of a timber boat. Salt water does not rot the wood fresh water does, as you would have seen your boat has rot from the top down not the bottom up. What I found with owning a timber boat for over 20 years when on the slip do everything that has to be done underthe boat. The rest can be done on your swing mooring or at a wharf like getting stuff off your boat. That way it limits the time up on the slip saving dollars if you are paying for it. A wooden boat will dry out whilst out of the water and the wood will shrink. Some boats have to be soaked in the cradel till the timber swells forming a seal again, then launched. Good luck with it and keep plugging away. A timber boat owner will never get there but they will come close!
@HarpersShed
@HarpersShed Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, your dead right about the direction of the rot. It is all top down in the direction of fresh water. That's is a very appropriate saying regarding never actually being finished but getting close. Hopefully one day I will be close👍🚢

Hey Dude. 09:00 in the uk. Just watching this...had exactly the same on our Maxum project and it sucks but as you said much better on the slip than afterwards. Ours was a metre long crack that appeared after a long road trip after a trailer failure. We didn't spot it until we started sinking at the lake as it was on the wrong side of a Chine.

Arh man I felt for you, think you got hulled. Pretty honest video bud, loved it cause I know I've been right there myself. I'm sure every boat owner has been in the same position at one point or another. I think it's what you chose to do in that situation that counts. Few weeks down the track and I don't even remember how much it hurt at the time.

Finally done! A grueling 6 days in the Australian Heat, tearing the old girl into pieces and then putting her back together, and of course, nothing is ever easy, and she sprung a few surprises on you, but you handled it like a champion! You and your mates, fixing her up and making her seaworthy again. Awful nice of your friends helping you fix her up, along with your Pops, He's likely just a pleased for you to have this boat as you are, If I know anything about Fathers, and I do because I am one, I'd be in there like white on rice too if my son had acquired a cruiser as sweet as your Kiarra there. She may be old and have a dated design but she a far sight better than having nothing at all, and to get her on a swap for a Motorcycle is even better, because even with her dry rot and the work she needed, she was still worth way more than the Bike is, it's just the previous own didn't have the drive or the desire to do what needed to be done. Yes she had a lot of rot and she needed a lot of work, but now that she is done, are you glad you did it? I'd wager that you are, otherwise I think you would have washed your hands of her long before now if you weren't interested in having her for the future. I've put a lot of work into things that simply weren't worth keeping but I still valued it and sometimes it better to stick with the devil you know, rather than try and get something you don't know what may be wrong with it. You now have an exact idea as to what condition she is in, and what may need to be done in the future, and what you want to do in the future. And that makes her worth a lot more in your own eyes, compared to something that may look better to you, but have no idea what may be wrong with it. SHe already looks much better, and now that you have all the rotted wood ripped out and replaced and glassed over, you know you can trust her more and use her too. the last thing really on your plate is the engine and that is in no real hurry to be done, you could wait until next year to drop it in if you wanted to, providing the engine she has in her right now doesn't start manifesting some new problem (knock on wood). Thanks for sharing mate, and well done! with the new glass, anti-foul paint on her hull and prop, things should be good for a while, but because it seems like the water there is chock-a-block full of living things, you might want to invest in a snorkel and mask as well as a hull scraper to clean her off ever time you take her out on a trip, or go fishing with her. LOL I couldn't believe my eyes when you pulled her up and out on the slip and saw all of the things dangling off her hull! And in such a short time! I know it's likely not possible but here in the fresh water ways of Canada many boaters have a dry mooring (not sure what they are called, so I'm calling it that) where they basically have a dry dock on stilts that they pull their boat into and with the flip of a switch or a manual crank it lifts the boat out of the water but stays where it's at there in the water, but those are not meant for tide water use I'm sure of it. they're mostly used for winter storage so the boat isn't frozen into the water and destroyed but I can't see the harm in storing a boat on one when you simply aren't using it. but that would likely need a piece of land where you could put it next to, say... in a river, up stream somewhere, Bu I am positive that Australia doesn't get winters like we do here in Canada. Anyway, glad that she's done now and out back at her mooring and still dry inside I wager. Thanks once again for sharing your adventures with Kiarra with us, here on the WWW! BTW did I ever mention that Kiara is the name of my second Daughter? just a happy coincidence. I had no idea that her name was Polynesian , but her Mother and I both loved it so that's what we named her. Just a FYI. thanks again. Cheers!

Hi mate, that was a pleasure to read. I consider myself very fortunate to have good friends and family that are all happy to lend a hand if needed. Dad is always available if I need anything and for that I will always be in his debt. I do still have some more patches to put in but the worst is now behind me. The next major section is actually the aft cabin roof. I think I am actually going to replace the entire roof this time and not patch as it's just too far gone. That's very cool that your daughter's name Is Kiarra also. The engine I feel is good and reliable now so I can focus on the rest of the boat and build the new engine in my "spare" time.
