You Can't Eat The Grass

Holiday Weekends are always busy days on a flower farm, but sales have been down this year from last, with people having less money to spend on luxury items such as a bouquet of flowers. Despite that, we offer good value at the $20 and $40 dollar price points, and the beauty of the bouquets still keep them selling. But we planned on selling at least 60 bouquets a market this year, and some markets we are selling closer to 40. All this means, we don't know what to expect from Canada Day weekend. Will it be a massive success, or a moderate let down? Two things are for sure, the flowers will look gorgeous, and you will have to stay tuned to find out what happens.
If you made it this far down into the description, I just want to take a moment to talk directly to you. Making videos is a passion that both Serina and I share. We love that we get to share our life with so many people around the world, and to bring some happiness and entertainment to everyone who choses to watch. We try to do something different than others, and to accomplish that it consumes our life. We have a hard time responding to comments because we are just so short on time, but we do read everything you comment on. Basically both of us have read every comment ever posted on our channel, we talk about the ideas people share, or about certain ideas that get suggested frequently. I just feel bad sometimes that people write us these long comments, that we don't always have the time to respond to, but just saying that we do read and digest those ideas, and it helps us shape our decisions. Comments are our favourite way to get feedback on our channel and farm, so please continue to share your ideas, then do get read and discussed by Serina and I. Also, if you like our videos, please give a thumbs up. It actually really makes a difference to how our videos perform. Thanks for watching!

A key to printing on the pricing boards, is to start with the center and write your word out from the center of it. So, with Sunflower, I would start by putting the 'L' in the middle of the board and then write backwards, and then forward from there. It's a trick I picked up a long time ago :)

You have so much height in your cooler. Just put tables in there and you can fit twice as many buckets of flowers in! We started growing flowers last year bc of you and that’s what we did this year instead of buying another trailer

I was thinking even one or two of the metal racks with various height shelves. Make a ramp and just roll the full rack out to load up the truck. Could you store the buckets of bouquets already in the plastic totes so you can have one less step when loading truck? ❤❤❤

The flowers looked stunning! I wonder if some of your sales have dropped at the market because those sales have moved to your stand maybe? After all, that's what I'd do if could just nip down the road and get them home, rather than carrying them back from a market.

Love the flowers, but would also love to see more about farm stuff that Ian does. Irrigation routine, lots of slow-mo sprinkler shots? Tool maintenance? General cleanup? It was interesting to see the bed being prepped - why cut and rake vs mulching it all into the ground with the tiller?

A thing that makes me always wonder is why don't you put shelves in the cooler? I don't know, perhaps I am just used to it. And the other thing that always makes me wonder is, why don't you put a glass door to the stand? That's maybe because I am from Europe and air conditioning is very rare here and energy costs would be astronomically high. Love the cherry's by the way, always makes me smile :)

I have sold at markets in previous years, took a year off for back surgery, and I started two markets this year. Sales have definitely been low. I am wondering if it’s simply the economy is struggling with high prices, and folks have less to spend on flowers. Wishing you success.

I have a Chicken Corridor around my garden that seems to be really effective at grasshopper control. The chickens have a 4ft wide run that goes around the garden. They keep it barren and not only has the weed control been much better, we are apparently the only garden around not overrun by grasshoppers. Good luck on the dahlias! Hopefully the insect foes will be avoided!

Bouquets are amazing!!! I need some cherries!! Been paying alot of money for them here...and you're just grabbing them off the tree....so not fair!! This was a very good video. If I could get what you guys get for bouquets... I'd be dancin' in the streets. My market area wouldn't support that. I have to sell alot at a lower pricepoint. That being said ...I would for sure pay the price for your amazing flowers cause I WOULD!!!! My area is so rural/small/farmers...etc. Some days I get more compilments than sales! It's a passion for me...could never make a living on it here. YOU ARE BLESSED. Such beauty...and cherries, too! Hope sales pick up for you guys. It may just be off this year. Beautiful flowers. May need to thing about diversifying the dried flower offerings, especially for flowers like yarrow and others that have value besides as being bouquet components. There are small batch skin care formulators and DIY beauty product creators, who are constantly trying to source high quality plant materials for their products, especially if the plants are organically cultivated.

I wonder if having something like flower crowns or hair clips on holidays would be a good idea? Since there’s more people and not necessarily standard market people, they might want something to wear during a holiday since they wouldn’t want to be carrying around a bouquet. I think it would be so cool to have a flower crown with something like statice that retains its color when dried. I’m not sure how expensive materials are or how profit margins would be but I would totally buy it.

Farmers market veggies are also a luxury item. They are (necessarily) always more expensive than the larger machine operations, so saying "people need to eat" is not a good argument - yes they need to eat, but they don't need to eat expensive food. Better arguments are that people can support local businesses and get fresher food, but that is not the same market as people buying because they need to eat.

I hear people complain about paying $4 a head for lettuce, so maybe bunch up culinary herbs like your basil for a test run for people to buy. Calendula is edible and used in soaps, creams, maybe flowers for uses like that? You already have some growing on the farm.

I think yall should make $8 Mason jar arrangements with the smaller flowers, recoup some of the lisianthus $$ ..maybe alot of ppl who aren't getting some of the larger ones would like the small jar ones...I love the small jar ones ❤ .. I love the farm and all the beautiful flowers!! Have yall thought of doing *You Pick* having ppl come pick their own flowers 💐..😅

Next year for Canada Day maybe have inexpensive straw hats adorned with brightly colored dried flowers for women. Perhaps something for the men. Just a thought.
