After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

Recca is a feast for the eyes and ears. It almost looks like an early 16-bit game. It was so cool that we got an "official" US release via the 3DS eshop.

Man by 1992 the developers for the NES really knew how to squeeze every bit of life outta that console. Such a feast for the eyes.

this is a pretty impressive showing for the systems hardware! I've never seen a shooter move this fast, with those parallax effects and music to boot. I'm no connoisseur just an average 8 bit fan, so i thank our marvelous curator for another great showing! you the man James!

How a 1.79mhz CPU is able to do all that is sorcery. With the sheer amount of stuff going on at once and without slowdown, it is amazing your console didn't go up in a poof of smoke.

It really is amazing what late released games (on any system) are able to do. Like the devs had finally mastered the hardware and could get everything out of it (and the NES also had some helper chips).

I think I got it as soon as it was released on the 3DS Eshop as I was curious, can't pass stage 3 normal mode, but I'm glad that I got the game way much earlier than the Eshop passing away.

Hey Bro, love your videos!!! RECCA is an 8-bit masterpiece!!! Three other NES Shooters you should check out are (Crisis Force) , (Gun Nac) and (Gradius 2). Gradius 2 for the NES has cool imaginative Bosses better than the arcade version and it only came out in Japan. Konami used they're own chips to make the game so amazing. That's why it couldn't be released in the U.S.A. Awesome video!!!!!🤩👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️

Looks cool. I also accidentally found this game, while surfing the internet about 10 ago, was quite surprised by the speed, graphics and the whole challenge aspect. Too bad we never came across this game in the 90s. Though...I still think that "Crisis Force" is the best shmup on NES/Famicom... the graphics there is just superb🎉, the gameplay is fast as well, with ACCEPTABLE level of difficulty😅

This is one of the most brutal games on the system for sure. Another one in that category is Holy Diver (which was re-released a few years ago IIRC). A lot of the weirdest/most experimental games are Japan-exclusive, up until the Xbox360/PS3 era more or less, when indies started becoming popular. This is definitely one of those experiments as well!

It's a cool game. Can't say I enjoyed the style of music much in it. But then I don't really enjoy playing the game either. But it's pretty impressive to watch and wonder who the heck the NES/Famicom isn't just melting from it all. :P

A marvel pushing the limits of the console!! Those backgrounds are reminiscent to some found at Earthbound. Legitimacy looks like an early 16-bit game, and I’m not even sure if there’s a better looking shootem up on pc-engine. The only way I beat the game was with save states. Another KID amazing game. Edit: commenting this here because I don’t think you take a look at comments on streamings: about your last adventure island streaming: 1: the dark brown frogs will jump over you if you run towards them, is that simple how to avoid them. The light green frogs will not move at all unless you shoot them once which will turn them into dark brown frogs. 2: on the cliff stage (the one with different music) you uncovered a couple of times a hidden egg that gives you a bonus stage OR the fire balls (can’t remember) but you didn’t notice it. This near the area where you barely had enough fruit to survive. 4: And in the last part of the streaming with that stalactite, the way to avoid it is by just jump over the cliff and do a small jump forward over the ice wall in front, you’ll probably miss or still touch that last pineapple seen in the streaming, but you just definitely NOT touch that ice wall that will slow you and let the stalactite reach you. 5: small tip about that fish that killed you: if you have weapon, you jump into that cloud, stop and shoot the fish, and continue. For me is easier to shoot them instead of jump over them. 6: snake will not shoot you if you don’t have a weapon. And I’m not sure, but if you reach them while shooting, they will shoot back more aggressively. This is more notorious in the areas where they are protected by the stones and you keep shooting at them.
