My ex's grandparents used to get fish and chips from Big John's in Selly Oak, then drive to Lodge Hill cemetery after closing time, clamber onto the car bonnet and then over the wall and have supper in the graveyard alongside assorted friends' graves. Not quite sure why I'm telling you this.

Have family down in brum and visit this place when am down there. Its cheap and cheerful and is more focused for the student market, its not gourmet food but more of a grab n go. There's more decent places on Coventry road in brum that u need to try. ❤️

Feel a bit let down by you in the past couple of Birmingham visits as you’ve gone to Sheldon & Chelmsley Wood two of the most run down places in Birmingham and they both get bad reviews. Part of me think this was deliberate negative reviews when Birmingham has so much more to offer.

Me and the misses went to the one in bordsley green today. It took 30 mins to get the food but my god was it worth the wait! Kebab meat was unlike anything Iv ever tasted and the spicy chicken burger was the crispiest most succulent chicken! 90% of big johns Restaurants are pure shit but that one is 🔥

As far as I know this chippy has never been a McDonald's. I believe the first Big John's was in Selly Oak and was not a drive thru, just an ordinary fish and chip shop but very cheap. I used to go there in the 1990s and early 2000s. I have used this particular Big John's but not recently. I started to go off it because I felt I could get better fish and chips elsewhere. I also feel that in the "old days", in the Selly Oak shop, the food tasted slightly better. Of course this could be simple nostalgia. However, when you are on a tight budget, Big John's cannot be beaten.

There are tons of places worth trying back up North but an example of someone other than the big hitters doing drive thru is Banny’s Fish And Chips - may even change your mind on the concept! Big John's ain't the best but I guess it's one of the only halal drive throughs and it's a well known brand so that's why many go there. Slams in Alum rock or lady pool road is actually really nice. They've got fast food but it's good quality. Not like maccies or big John's. It's halal too
