Excellent overview. I use an A nib as it is smooth and writes a broader line than a fine. More people should try them.

My Lamy Al Star Bronze with a F nib is more medium than some of my other M pens lol, It works but I definitely need to get an EF, my understanding is that this is pretty common with Lamy nibs.

Interesting, thank you! If a Kugel nib is more 'forgiving', what are it's disadvantages? Respectively what are the advantages of 'non-Kugel' nibs? I just wonder why not all nibs are ball shaped since they're easier to handle.

Block shaped nibs makes interesting character shape. Another example is the one in twsbi pen, I quite enjoyed that

That was a really great video, thanks! I found an old Lamy Accent from 2001 with a MK-nib. Apparently they are not selling them anymore in Germany, because I wanted a new one... How old is your MK nib?

The very best - my own favorites anyway - Lamy nibs are the B and BB on the Lamy 2000 and the M on the Lamy Aion. I have no time for other Lamy pens and nibs, especially the Safari and its siblings.

Does the black nib from the LX (which I think is pronounced Elox, from exloiseren (German anodized), like the top and bottom caps) fit the Lamy-abc? Also, I think the Al from AlStar just stands for Aluminum.

I found that Lamy converter quality went down a bit. 2 out of 5 converter I bought recently doesn't work well. I bought it froma physical reseller, so it's not a counterfeit or anything like that.

Good review! Question on the Broad nib: can you make the line thicker or thinner by varying the pressure? I don't see that on the demo paper. Thx!
@theoffstageme
@theoffstageme 7 ай бұрын
Lamy Nibs are not flex or soft. You have to be careful on how much pressure you apply as they can get damaged. Applying a little gentle pressure will put a little more ink down, but it’s definitely not flexing at all

I've always found lamy nibs to be broader than most others, I have to use an EF nib or I get far too much ink flow. Once the EF nibs are broken in they're very smooth, I use it daily for writing on just about anything.

I'm buying my first fountain pen and I have narrowed it to Pilot Kakuno and the Lamy Safari Special Edition the one that comes with a Lamy T10 ink cartridged and a Lamy Z28 Converter. I still don't know what nib size to go but from your sample the Lamy in EF and F looks good to me but the Med looks too thick for me. I am using a ballpoint pen in .5mm always and I like the it and the .7mm is a bit broad for me. What Lamy and Kakuno nib size equivalent that closely resemble a .5 mm ballpoint pen do you think?

As per the Lamy nib guide: EF - 0.36mm F - 0.46mm M - 0.56mm Tolerance is ± 0.06mm. Your preference is probably closer to Fine than Extra Fine or Medium.

@@theoffstageme how does it write in comparison to the standard nib? What kind of line variation? Is it like an architect nib? Or perhaps a nib that changes the line by the angle you hold the pen?
@theoffstageme
@theoffstageme Жыл бұрын
A lot of that is covered in this video. I talk about the EF, F, M, B, 1.1, 1.5, 1.9, LH, MK, A, and C nibs. As far as I know, Lamy doesn't make an architect in the Z50 style nib, but the Cursive is similar, but minimal variation. There are no kinds of flex in Lamy nibs, and they don't really have a zoom style nib that writes differently depending on the angle.

Thank you again for your patience with me. I do have the LH nib but haven't used it yet. It may be the nib I should use being an over writer. However I have been intrigued by the Cursive nib which I have called Calligraphy. This is the nib I referred to. It is an interesting design. How you found it to be a smooth writer? It may also work for me.

I have a 1.1 and i use that for headers in my journal. Do you use the 1.5 and 1.9 nib daily? or is it for headers as well? I can't really see writing a letter or etc with those sizes.

I rarely use the 1.5 and 1.9… but they are designed as Calligraphy nibs… so that is the purpose of a nib that broad

i used a 1.5 almost every day for a month & it was so much fun ...i only stopped using it because of my own rotation policy, but if you're the kind that take the time to sit down & write, the 1.5 is amazing. i am a person with multiple handwtittings & the 1.5 made me get a new one, i even re read the things i wrote with it just cause it blows me how it forced me to discover a new thing i didn't know i'd liked so much.

@@liberioescriba6158 thanks for sharing your experiences. Just like Platinum has all their nibs in demo units at pen shows I was thinking about getting a few Jinhao 80s with some Lamy nibs EF to 1.5 sizes. Would be cilild I didn’t think about the nib sizes teaching you to try new writing styles so you have given me something to think about. Trying to figure out journaling / daily use.

I have an LX medium and an Al-Star broad and those nibs are amazing. Just got the 2000 with the 14k nib, no where near as nice as the first two. The 14k medium is broader than the steel broad. So sad about it, was really looking forward to the 2000 and I’m very underwhelmed.

The 2000 is known to have a generous flow. If the store offers a nib exchange policy, perhaps you could ask for an F or EF nib? 🤔
@geslinam9703

@@basta.dotto_ I thought of that, I could do it, but probably won’t. I’ve bought more than a few pens that I didn’t love at first and then they grew on me….hoping that might happen with this one. Oh, who am I kidding?? Will probably just buy another one. I like broader nibs, just wasn’t expecting this medium to be so broad, but I’ll use it. Just not on this new paper I’m loving right now (Iroful paper) It’s one of those papers that is a touch absorbent and makes the pen lines a little fatter.

@@geslinam9703 Ah, yes, the paper. If you want to write with Iroful, maybe an option is to change the ink? Maybe a Sailor ink? Pilot standard and Iroshizuku inks can feather quite a bit. Or maybe an Edelstein?

i really dont understand why fountain company like lamy and Jinhao where you could change their nibs dont make a ultra flex nib on their line up, they will make millions, their head personal are not smart at all!!!!
@theoffstageme
@theoffstageme 9 ай бұрын
I think with Jinhao it is only a matter of time with their standard nib pens same with other Chinese brands (some may already) but probably not with their ‘Lamy style’ nibs… and probably with same with Lamy. I think the engineering of their nibs would make flex tricky. There isn’t a lot of length to flex until the shoulders wrap around. Also the steel they use is not at all flexible. So they would need to reengineer that too. Also, the intended purpose of Lamy is probably a bit more utilitarian for every day writers (and even the Safari was originally designed for students). Even their Calligraphy nibs are primarily only sold on the Joy pen (or separately). So I don’t see Lamy offering a true flex option any time soon. I agree that if they could it would be a gold mine for them. 100%.
