I have been busy working, so I am behind in the videos. I got about 2 seconds into the video, and I told my wife "that looks like the snake river." I swear I didn't even look at the blurb beneath. I just clicked because who doesn't want to watch a sucker fish being eaten... But my family is from Idaho, and I got super excited! I caught my first fish out there. A trout. I will never forget it. I love that part of the country!

When I was a kid, my Grandpa would gather all us grandkids to the banks of the creek that ran through the property to snag Suckers. Grandpa would gut them, fillet them, remove the bones, and fry them up as Sucker Patties. I have no idea how he got all the bones out, or how he made the raw Sucker flesh into those patties....but they were delicious. The meat was so white and flaky......two patties, a nice scoop of mashed taters with a crater formed in the center and some brown soup beans ladled into those tater craters. Good eating! That was Grandpa's favorite meal, and he would eat it 4 days out of 7 during Sucker running time....and when the Suckers were gone, canned Mackerel was used to make the fish patties.

Re do the mudfish, keep it alive until the moment you cook it and it fries up like catfish. If it's dead for too long, the meat turns mushy

I miss Sarah being on this trip, she would love this kind of fishing. I know she's a mother and needs to be home with her girls because of the long distance you've traveled. I guess Kelly is the camera person on this trip. I guess her being along made me home sick for Sarah. In southwest Georgia red horse suckers are a treat. You have to scale them, filet the side off, gash the meat every 1/8 of an inch without cutting through the skin. Batter them and fry them and the small bones will dissolve during the cooking process from the heat of the grease. It’s a lot of people’s favorites during the winter time.

Nice to see you and Robert goofing together on an epic adventure with Kelly in tow. In my youth I used to spear suckers in Southern Ontario in a river draining into Lake Ontario. As soon as the solid ice broke up the suckers would appear and in the shallows where the rapids started - very shallow - they were as thick as salmon, doing their spawning thing. I used to get dozens of them and freeze a lot right out of the ice cold water. We all enjoyed the flavor. True, not as good as trout or pickerel but still a good eating fish. Would never consider eating them caught anytime later than when they'd just come into the river in early Spring. They'd mush up later on in the year scavenging off the bottom as the water warmed up. Lots of fine bones so you just have to be careful.

This video hits home! Absolutely amazing, I live in Oregon and go to Idaho a few times a year to fish for crappie. I honestly didn’t even think of trying for steelhead there. Steelhead is so much fun to catch! As much as I love fishing for em off a boat fishing off shore in a small river is so much more fun!

I lived in that area for 11 years and fished from my jet boat, man I miss it. I've fished the Snake River many times, It's a blast. You're right sucker fish is killer for catching sturgeon.

Here in southern Missouri the sucker fish is a delicacy. We remove the scales then knock the sides off them. We then score the filet by cutting the from the meaty side down to the skin every 1/8" - 3/16" apart by doing this it will cook out the y-bones. Roll the fillet in seasoned corn meal then deep fry.

Just subscribed, love your content,all of you! Super positive and echoes my sentiments about living life. Gabe, like you, my wife and I try every fish we dare when we're in Florida, our Native Florida friends think we're gross but then we trick them into eating the fish and they always love it 😋 We live in Northern Vermont but stay in Sanibel and Jupiter Farms in the winter painting houses. Usually in Jupiter every April, Wed love to fish with you guys sometime and who knows, maybe you need some painting done. Again, you guys are blessed and we're all blessed to have you putting out grade A material. 👍

Gabe, FYI back in the day in the finger lakes of New York we speared suckers, gutted them, cut off the heads, chunked them up, put in the pressure cooker and canned them. That way you could eat bones and all.

We love sucker fish here in southeast Alabama. We put out nets to catch redhorse sucker. It's honestly one of my favorite fish to eat when cooked right. What you need to do is filet it off the bone. Then turn the filet meat side up and gash it to the skin about every 1/8 inch. Batter that joker up with some corn meal. Get your grease hot. Around 375 or so and throw em in. What this does is crystallize all the pin bones. Really really good eating. Keep up the good work. 👍

Gabe my Dad claims suckers in Texas are some of the Best eating fish. The old timers aren't scared of a few bones. They used to scale and cross section them then fry them hard. Some of the bones would then be edible. Fyi. One of my Dads favorite fish. Love your channel.

Here in WV in the spring we would gig white suckers and after cleaned my grandmother would pressure cook them and can them. She used them to make fish cakes, the bones were still there but soft and you never notice them. We also ate the fried roe.
