I had never before seen such a sombre, non-exploitative yet poignant depiction of male-on-female sexual assault by a male director before. I really applaud Jean-Marc Vallée and his tastefulness and understanding of female trauma, and the editing is such a big part of it

When I fist saw the show with my mom I was thinking of the editing and storytelling and I was amazed, I'm a "new" filmmaker and this show was kinda an inspiration for me and you helped me understand the editing even more so thank you.

I never thought about the POV switch in Celeste's thought flashbacks, thanks for bringing this to my attention. Weirdly enough I've made a video on Editing & Empathy in Big Little Lies and somehow we both mention 2001: A Space Odyssey and we both end our videos with the same shot - I guess we know what's good :)

Great video. Editing might be the most important part of movies or this mini series. I was convinced of this when I saw a video how editing saved star wars. It's hard to know what scene to leave in & where to cut. The editor should let the actors & scenes lead them as opposed to the editing dictate the story.

Great job! Editing can make or break a movie. Star wars they say was saved in the editing room before it was edited all Lucas big director friends thought it was not good. I would def say the ocean is the supporting character in the show. Amazing when everytime perry hits someone at the end it flashed to the ocean , I didnt even realize when bonnie pushed him ending the violence the ocean washed over it. Brilliant observation. I'm sure our brains subconsciously noticed it . Amazing and what a great job the director and editor did. I still cant get over that jane and celeste children are brothers. Interesting that one son raised by perry is the bully while his other son is gentle and took the blame . Like when perry is talking about how he doesnt want his boys near the other boy bc hes violent hes talking without knowing it that hes speaking of his son. Crazy. That's why with a season 2 out I'm curious what perry would have done about Ziggy. We know jane didnt report the rape as she never told anyone so I wonder if Perry as the therapist said would go after custody of his sons bc of ego would have done the same with Ziggy. That would have been very interesting. Season 2 really revolved around perry esp at the end since he caused 2 of the leads so much pain. I wish Perry didnt die since they made the second season. It would have been crazy to see how the rape revealed would have affected everyone. It kind of made celeste life simple she didbt have to move with her boys or fight perry with an ugly divorce and custody and celeste could have had Jane help back her up that he was her rapist which would have been a tough call as it would have been part of the public records and Ziggy would find out at some point his dad rated his mom.
