I enjoyed my intense disdain for Dr. Melfi’s patronizing psychiatrist, ‘ Elliot ‘, played by Peter Bogdonavich ! The Sopranos. { I heartily hated Bob Eubanks, with his smug whilst inane attacks on women, circa (1960’s-ish) “ The Newlywed Game “} ~~I know that you said TV, but whether he played a Priest or Truman Capote, I loved Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s “ Difficult Men “. He was someone whose gift had such a breadth. 🌹

Yes yes yes! I just re-binged season 3 and it is so clear to me that both Eve and Villanelle are breaking away from everything imposed on women that is actually meaningless in order to find each other and real meaning. Niko and all he represents, state politics and intrigue, "handlers," limitations that are never reciprocal, false and real families that offer women nothing. Inspiring!

Yea if you are a 16 year old American white middle class girl with all the time and all the privilege in the word who has no worries and now has to give names to all her sexual feelings but this is a Russian woman from a very poor Russian village. Eastern women are suppressed, treated like second class citizens most of the time and expected to marry a man and give him children. Not to mention homosexuality is seen as something disgusted and you could raped and/or killed for it. Time to stop seeing the world through the internet dear, you have no idea what happens in the rest of the world.

love this show and this commentary, but i have to disagree slightly with your thesis that villanelle is simply "a child at heart." i definitly agree that villanelle loves nothing more than to have her own screwed-up type of fun, and she's definitely got a wild sense of humor, but i think it's crucial to understanding just how complex and incredible villanelle is as a character to recognize that she purposefully does and says these disarming, weird, funny things precisely because she /knows/ it'll throw people for a loop and charm them. villanelle is not only highly intelligent but highly manipulative, which is a typical feature of psychopathy. think of how much interpersonal power she exercises just by being funny, unselfconscious and confident, clever with words, etc., over her victims, Sebastian, arguably Konstantin. not only does she catch them off-guard and disarm them, but she gains their admiration, attraction, affection, whether they want to give it or not. even her line in the (absolutely brilliant) kitchen scene about whether or not eve is wearing a sweater attached to a shirt is wonderfully calculated to take eve off guard, seduce eve's interest even further. and (because sandra oh is also brilliant) you can see on eve's face that she's charmed, despite everything. i think it's important to give her this credit. villanelle is as brilliant and as excellent at controlling, dominating, and manipulating as hannibal lector.

Halie I think it's a bit of both. I payed attention and it's true, every time she acts throws a random question/comment at someone it's exactly when the conversations are going somewhere she doesn't want. And when she's watching the child eat ice cream and the reaction she gets just for being a child is also very telling. But she acts also very childlike even without motives. The way she bonded and argued with the little girl by the end, was like they were both the same age. Role-playing hide and seek too. The whole crush on Eve. The way she's seeking attention and approval from older parental figures. I could go on and on... I really hope we get to see more of her past next season, while it won't redeem her, it will give us more insight.

I have to second what Caroline said, she's definitely manipulating however she seems to regress as well. She seeks older people to look after her and give her validation and fun, whilst it is also clear she much more easily gets along with someone younger e.g. her handlers feisty daughter. She's probably closer to a sociopath because a lot of her behaviour appears to be reactive and learned.

There are a lot of good Difficult women in television but Villainelle is exceptional because she's so charismatic. Not just attractive but charming in her toxicity. To the point where we see people in her life that know she's a monster or can see how mean she is and love her despite herself. And it's difficult not to love someone who's in love with life, regardless of who they are. Villainelle, despite being a bloodsoaked sociopath, is always focussed on having a great time.

@atlaskat7980

@philosophicalinquirer312
@philosophicalinquirer312 4 жыл бұрын
@@kcmn0089 I think she might be a sociopath rather than psychopath and that fits the "tragic backstory" of abuse, losing parents, violence etc (i.e nurture not nature) but could be a bit of both. Villianelle is certainly capable of empathy and neither is she dissociated in her actions. Gives the impression of a sociopath. On the other hand Aaron Peel is more psychopathic. (killing the father, Sadistic & bully like) Two cases: Villianelle relationship with Konstantine which is similar to Leon "the professional" and Mathilda. A type of father/daughter relationship and it seems to distress Villianelle to kill Konstantine. However, see when they meet again - its a relationship that has love and passion. Villianelle definitionally has some affection for Konstantine. As a sociopath this would just be selective relationships - the neurological writing still exists, just needs a re-boot. As for a psychopath, they are biologically incapable of love - there is no baseline to compare to "amoral" would be the term. Secondly with Eve - there is affection for Eve and plenty opportunities for Villianelle to kill Eve but she does not. Villianelle is not fueled by revenge and there is something she admires in Eve. HOWEVER - this could simply be Villianelle's narcissistic psychopathy. This is were I think & argue that perhaps Villianelle is a psychopath. Villianelle is solipsistic, only thing that matters is Villianelle ! and she gets a high from being the center of attention - self pride. She is like the star at the center of the show and all others orbit around her - and thats her raison d'être, her primary drive, her meaning, her value. Villianelle gets the thrill seeking by having Eve orbit her sphere of influence. Likewise with Konstantine - the more he is impressed with her work, its like a daughter impressing the dad for attention. This makes sense, as soon as Eve breaks the spell at the end of season 2, she breaks the orbit around Villianelle and of course....Villianelle shoots her (although we know its not the end) Eve has voyeurism for the psychopath - but far from a psychopath herself. That was Villianelle's misjudgment "your like me" We know Eve lacks the psychopathy because of the immediate guilt, regret and pain after stabbing Villianelle and even worse, the pain and trauma caused by the Axe murder of the handler. The voyeurism for the psychopath is a dissociated state and completely different to the associated state of actually being a psychopath. However, there are deep connections - and disturbing ones. These are discussed in moral philosophy with the trolly experiments such as would you switch a train track to divert a train from killing 5 people to killing 1 person. (utilitarian net = more survivors) The other side of the thought experiment - would you push the fat guy over the bridge to block the train and save the lives of 5 people. Psychopaths dont see much difference in the above two scenarios. Logically there is no difference, both save 5 and kill 1.

@@philosophicalinquirer312 This was a brilliant description. But I have a question if you have already watched S3, where Villanale's tragic backstory is told in an episode where she goes back to her family. And the last conversation she had with her mother was where Tatiana accused Oksana for having some kinda "darkness", and that she was a manipulative child who used to control people around her from childhood so much that her mother decided to leave her in the orphanage. Can it suggest that she was born with these manipulative, enraged, complete overlap of ed and ego-like qualities and doesn't that qualify for a primary psychopath? If that's true, by season 3 ending, what's her deal with Eve? Because, it seemed like they are both going to bring real changes in their lives, especially Villanale. And that is something really unusual, if she wants to change for "love" (or obsession?) in case she's a psychopath.

Jodie comber’s play of villanelle is extremely charming and entertaining, she’s so endearing! Villanelle is strong, confident in herself, smart woman and funny and light at the same time. Jodie really gets the vibe of the writing and the other characters play, she really brought the character to life and same with Konstantin and Caroline. Great actors really getting the dry humour of Phoebe’s (the writer/director)‘s style. It’s an amazing show and I’d say one of the most entertaining and well done shows out right now! The humour especially is very up to date, dry and the drama is so encapsulating like I can’t not binge it!

I think Villanelle is just so complex that the moment anyone tries to understand her, it gets contradicted by another part of her. That's what's so intriguing about her. She has so many parts that change the way you think about her, and she's constantly reacting in different ways to change it again. She shows clear signs of psychopathy, but also shows signs of emotion (so it makes you wonder if she really is a psychopath or if she's a sociopath), and then she'll kill the people she loves without a second thought, even though she claims to love them, but she also craves affection and attention from those around her and wants to be thanked when she does things for people, getting upset when either they don't thank her or the "thank you" isn't real. I love the complexity of her so much because when I think I've understood her, she confuses me again and I'm pulled back in.

I'd argue she's more of a violent sociopath than a psychopath. She's very chaotic and messy, she gets too caught up in her sadism to be as calculated as violent psychopaths are. (I specify violence because antisocial personality disorder doesn't require violence and it's unwise to connect the two by default)
@Senate300
@Senate300 5 жыл бұрын
Correct. Psycho/Sociopathy are often mistakenly measured by the scale of their violent atrocities and their indifference towards them. Villanelle is a gifted, well paid Assassin and natural predator who worships the act of killing. Plus there's no smouldering rage driving her bloodlust. She lacks the discipline that comes with the job and has no respect for authority, much to the chargrin of her handler who must be wondering "When does she turn her murderous eye on me?". It became basically the Hitwoman shits and her employers wipe. That being said the Hairpin injection eye stabbing, the poisoned perfume and the carbon monoxide murder were extremely calculated assassinations with little or not a drop of blood spilt.

I love your analysis of the character and its impact on its viewers! Aside from Eve becoming a surrogate for the viewers, what I love about the show is how Eve's seemingly normal life begins to blur throughout the series and Villanelle is that vehicle wherein Eve's internal struggle (desires, morals, etc.) bubbles to the surface.

She was fantastic. I stopped partway through the series to google her and find out who the hell she was. She's just amazing. She's funny and so charismatic and, I thought, believable in a part that could have felt forced. She's beautiful but she's not trying to be - I fully expected her to be the clicheed beautiful assassin, cast in part for her looks, and was so pleasantly surprised when she was not. She brings intelligence and vulnerability to the role but she's freaking scary too! I loved Sandra Oh as well - she brought most of those qualities to her role too, but Villanelle is a one-of-a-kind part and it was given a one -of-kind performance. I felt like rewatching the entire series when I finished it (I didn't, but I probably will at some point.) I have to say the writing is fab too - Phoebe Waller-Bridge is so talented - if you haven't seen Fleabag, you really must. Why the hell didn't Jodi Comer get an Emmy nomination? Not even half-way through I thought she was a shoe- in not only to be nominated, but to win. WTF?!! (Villanelle - go get them! Ha.)

This is the kind of question I have been asking myself ever since I was sucked into this brilliant series. Was it maybe Jodie Comer’s acting? It’s hard to remind yourself that Villanelle’s a bad person. She killed without batting her eyes, empty and it’s kinda confusing. I really love the dark comedic timing during the last episodes of season 1 and 2. Even in serious scenes, she came off funny. Season 1, Eve tried to kill her with a knife. V: Don’t pull it out. E: (pull knife out) V: WHAT DID I JUST SAY?!!!! Season 2, killing Raymond with an axe. V to E: Do it! E: (axed Raymond on the shoulder) V: THE SHOULDER???? THE SHOULDER??? Oh my god, this is soooo unhealthy to have a crush on this sassy, sarcastic, smart, beautiful but deadly chic.

This guy nails it pretty much in his assessment. Jodie is a tour de force and is playing her role most brilliantly for which can only be summed up as a role of a lifetime. She is a brilliant actress and watching her breathe life into such a nuanced sadistic character is almost akin to watching an artist paint a masterpiece or a pitcher pitch a no-hitter. I questioned how can someone depicted as an obvious psychopath be so likeable. My initial thought was because she was female and because of her looks but the more the show developed you could see all those things the narrator of this clip describes. I have never seen a female play a role like this before in the manner in which Comer does. If you have not seen how good she plays this character then do yourself a favor and tune it. She is truly brilliant in this role and I hope she can keep up this high level of performance for the entirety of the show.

I really do think that her charm makes her so fascinating and sets her apart from male psychopath characters. She's also has this interesting balance of both masculine and feminine traits, while also having a mysterious and almost depressing core. I know her backstory gets explored later on in this show, and I think having her backstory fleshed out helps to explain her behavior in season 1. Of course, it is in no way excusing her murderous ways. A killer is a killer and psychopaths aren't fixable...but we can try to understand how they became that way.

Right then. Observation time. Bypassing the psycho/sociopath debate, Villanelle has the looks of an high fashion Eastern European catwalk beauty who's whimsical, charming, sarky, adorable personality is fun to be around if not disarming. Plus she's a big kid at heart. It just so happens that Villainelle's a gifted, prodigal Assassin of pride and arrogance who's hits go from meticulously calculated works of art to displays of wanton bloodlust with no need to collect trophies. The sheer joy she gets in subjecting her targets to a slow painful death just to see the life drain from their eyes makes her all the more sadistic. Until now she has done so with impunity and her showing off is the mark of an egomaniac longing for an audience. She's no team player and prefers to work alone as working with others cramps her style. The air of unpredictability, lack of discipline and respect for authority Villanelle's displayed as of late has left her fairgame for treachery. Be it by her employers(The Twelve) or her handler, Konstantin(Whom she hinted many times can get the bullet. Plus the more he tried to discipline her, the more she bullied him). Her loyalty is to the job at hand. Not the friend, mentor or lover if either are named as targets for a hit which is what makes her extremely effective if not short sighted. Villanelle is Queer as folk who would use and abuse both sexes as disposable pleasures in equal measure, but gets driven to distraction by women with thick, long, dark hair(accept Nadia) old enough to be her mother, there to be seduced then destroyed after the conquest is complete and the novelty behind them wears off. Either physically(Nadia via homicide), emotionally(Anna to the point of sucide) or mentally(Eve, via professional and personal afflictions). Villanelle is a beast made flesh and doesn't pretend otherwise, though thanks to JC's brilliant performance, we're all still questioning how much of her is still humane.

You hit on some interesting points in this. I really enjoyed it. I think it is fascinating to consider why we root for such bad characters. In real life, we would acknowledge that someone like Villanelle is a monster and have little sympathy for her if she were caught and killed or imprisoned. What a show like this does tho is allow you to see the humanity, that other side of the bad guy. Even if it's just a tiny bit of humanity in a monster, I think we tend to believe every person has some good in them and is salvageable. I 100% agree however, that Killing Eve doesn't push that idea down our throats and I am not convinced that Villanelle had any real trauma in her life to make her this way. Maybe she's always been the cause of everyone else's trauma! No matter what she's done tho, she is still funny and real and smart and I think you can't help but appreciate that part of who she is.

Think its hard to say with the information available which it is tho.

@@hairlokk8672 Yet when it comes to her background, the TV adaptation did it differently. Villanelles mum died from a young age, her dad was an alcoholic. She castrated and killed husband of the teacher(Anna) she had an affair with which got her locked up in the first place. Got with Nadia then took her place when she got recruited by the Twelve as an Assassin which gave birth to Villanelle. Even her sexual triggers are different. TV Villanelle is driven to distraction by Middle aged dark haired women while her book version made a sport out of seducing authority figures which is about power more than anything else. The refreshing one thing people find about Villainelle/Oksana character is that she doesn't kill for vengeance(which is considered a cliche) but for greed and fun.

@@Senate300quick note to add onto your comment: people with ASPD (who also meet the criteria for psychopathy) can be both things simultaneously: born with the neurological differences that caused the psychopathy in the first place, and traumatic events early in life that cement the antisocial behavior. i know this because i was diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder a long time ago, i meet the criteria for psychopathy (i scored a 34 / 40 on the PCL-R test) and i experienced repeated trauma (both as a kid + as an adult). i was always detached and cold, even as a child; destructive when angry, used aggression + manipulation tactics to get my way, would use people then toss them after i no longer benefitted from them, and had conduct issues from an early age (which escalated into much more severe things like violence as a teenager). my mother described me in a similar way to Villanelle: "you were a complicated kid." (very close to "she said you were difficult child" from the show). "you gave us mental whiplash from an early age, almost constantly; but even though you've calmed down as an adult, it never really ended." (us = my parents and brother). early intervention, being locked up, and forced to go to intensive therapy (a lot of it inpatient, but also outpatient) off and on for over 18 years is mainly what prevented me from going down the road to incarceration. combined with my selfishness (obviously i don't want to go to prison since it would end my freedom; so i'm not abstaining from criminal acts because it's morally wrong - i just don't do them because of the consequences i would face); as well as the distrust of (and defiance of) authority, i steered clear of becoming a statistic in the legal system. people outside of my family have described me as a "sadistic, cruel psychopath" who "is endlessly fascinating, despite the callousness and danger" and i've 1000% weaponized that fascination to take advantage of others. the funny part is that Villanelle and i share two traits: we're both 1) women and 2) bisexual (at least according to her portrayal in the tv series - i haven't read the book[s] so i can't speak on those). i know my comment is going to read as narcissistic / ridiculous / over the top, but i don't care lol. the greatest thing about being this way is that i cannot feel shame, guilt, or remorse. it has served me well throughout my life. i assume that's something a psychopath WOULD say though so it's par for the course lol.
