Big Mistake! Family Stuck in the Desert | RV Life

Fulltime RV Travel is an endless adventure. However, sometimes the adventure is trying to get out of the mess you got yourself into. Just like what happened to us when we decided to visit Big Dune Recreational Area in Amargosa Valley, Nevada. Let's just say when you decide to visit a Big Sand Dune, there will be LOTS of sand. Enough sand to sink an F-350 Dually real quick. Pulling together as a family and working through the problem is step number one. Join us on our epic desert fail and tons of RV Travel fun.
We also travel to the "World's Largest Car Forest" in Goldfield, Nevada. We have seen a lot of cool areas around the country, but this one was totally unexpected, Free to the public, and worth every minute. We were so thankful that we found this area and it fast ranked among the best sites we have visited to date. Take a look.

Fun Fact: We basically got stuck because when we sank in the sand, I didn’t put the truck in Neutral to shift into 4x4. I just turned the knob over to 4x4 and it didn’t engage. A few more attempts with the tires screaming and sinking further, we finally figured it out. LOL. Huge lesson learned for the off-road newbies here venturing out in the wild terrains of Nevada. Another notch in our campfire stories to tell people about our epic fails as we travel the country. Best, Lee

This right here is your answer. I grew up riding the dunes out by Yuma and you always air down in the sand. Also, if you're in the desert you carry a shovel and water everywhere you drive. Glad to see you got the truck out!!

It’s a good thing that you double check the bed of your truck and found your credit card! A dually getting stuck in the sand. Plus that sand looked very very fine. Wow! Stay safe and stay cool!

A really interesting video. We lived & worked in Pahrump for about 5 years. We visited all of the places y'all did except for the sand dunes and car forest. Never knew those were things. The kids sure looked like they were having a blast! Hope y'all had a chance to have a sandwich at the Mozart Club in Goldfield. Oh and Beatty is pronounced with a long A (Bay - tee).

LEE u need what We call an E-tool a shovel that folds right up. Any Army and Marine Vet knows just how handy-dandy they are. I see a few full-time rv have them.

I may have missed it but how long did it take to get unstuck? Your family fared much better than mine. My kids would have whined a bunch.

It took about 20 minutes and we were back on the trail again. Most of that time was just trying to see what we had in the truck versus actually digging. About 5 minutes of shifting sand around and the truck had good traction. I forgot to shift into neutral when putting it in 4x4 so it never engaged. That’s why we sank so deep. Once I realized that, it was all good. LOL. 😀

Hi Kip! It sure is. This is hard lesson in teaching us how to use our 4x4 correctly. I guess after 3 years on the interstates we got a little rusty at off-roading. 😀 Best, Lee

What am I missing? the Fender says FX4 which usually means 4x4, so come only the back sunk and you didn't put it in 4x4 when you started to spin?

Hi Brent. Things happen. When we first sank, I flipped it over to 4x4 but forgot to put it in neutral. It didn’t engage. Then we really sank. LOL. 4x4 Low is what got us out finally with a little bit more traction on the rear tires. Glad we had it. Overall it was a fun day and we learned that we need onboard air so we can deflate and inflate our tires for better traction.

I love that we are both searching for a Gluten Free bread that actually tastes good. 😀❤️ Right now I am eating the Walmart brand it’s OK, but not amazing. It’ll do until I can find one that is incredible. Our RV ovens don’t do the job when it comes to baking, so we are still on the hunt. Please let me know if you find something as well. Best, Pam
