If numbers matter, Tavares is worth at most 1/3 his salary. If he's happy with that, management will be too. Marner is a princess. He hasn't delivered. He's gotta go. A Toffoli type instead would help. They let Hyman go, which shows what planning and expectation can be worth.

They have a lot of holes to fill. Holmberg, Jarnkrok, Kamf, Dewar, Robertson don’t score or play well in the playoffs. Samsonov sucked. Woll is made of glass. Reilly is not a #1 defenceman. Edmonson was ok but not great etc etc… most of the team was outplayed by guys who were weaker on paper.

I subscribed but I don't know why. I was watching the western finals to see Hyman and Cece (RHD) two players the Leafs refused to sign back playing well and going to the Stanley Cup. then I saw Tanev (RHD) playing well for dallas in the conference finals. A defenseman the Leafs would not give enough for. Just like Parayko (RHD) from St. Louis, whom the Leafs refused to get and went and trade for antoher left handed shot D instead, you guys want to faithfully report ruours of what they ight do. But they do NOTHING and lose. Now what? You going to blame it on Tavares and Marner to justify letting go of their salaries and replaicng them with what? Leafs management will dump it all on Matthews shoulders and when he's spent give you some dumb ass reason to trade him also. There is not enoug room to list all the players they have done this to since 1978 starting with Sittler. The team is cheap and profits come before winning, that's the Maple Leafs.

Tavares is not the problem. Marner is the problem, way to small snd plays like it. The league has changed again and even small players can't just rely on skill. He is wayyyyy to fragile and soft . Very very talented but one dimensional

Buddy , it's not Tavares fault . Tavares is worth his contract and lived up to it . Players like Marner and Nylander who are 1 dimensional are the problem. When Nylander scores people tend to forget how lazy he is . His all glory no guts . Marner is a different can of worms . He is way to small . He is just a set up man and nothing else , can't hit , check , go in the corners and everyone knows he is not shooting . How in the world Leafs have him 11m is beyond me . With Marner it's not about effort he just out manned . With Nylander it's lack of effort and toughness

Slight overpay, but they also have to account for what guys like him will be making 3-4 years from now as well. 40 goal/100pt guys don't come cheap and they get more expensive every year. More importantly, he actually shows up in the playoffs and scores somewhat regularly. He's got the same amount of goals as Auston does the last 3 years in one less game.

If I were Tribbles I would come right out and tell the press that Jonny is a Leaf for as long as he wants to be. Cut through the speculation. He was one of a handful of guys on the team that gave his all. Fought for pucks in the corners and in front of the net every shift. Took a beating sometimes. Can't say that about any of the other core four guys. As for Mathews for captain, he should be based on numbers but does not show an ounce of heart. Has anyone ever seen a camera shot of him angry, yelling at a Ref or in the face of opposing teams players? Just skates away at every whistle. Looks totally checked out all the time, like he'd rather be somewhere else. That is not captain material. Great player for sure but that does not win you cups. Great teams that stick together win cups.

Rant Alert: Deep teams win cups, look at Washington and Tampa, once they lost their depth their stars couldn’t win a round. You need a combination of stars and volume depth, like Burakovsky , Hagel, type players. The leafs haven’t had that and that’s probably a huge reason why they can’t win a round. You can only pay your stars so much to build a proper roster around them. Don’t get me wrong Marner is an amazing player, and it’s gonna suck to see him thrive elsewhere.
