Sorry, Jerry, you weren't quick enough! 3:32 That "4 inches" is actually 3.75 inches. 😝 But seriously, the "nominal" vs. actual lumber sizes aren't due to drying shrinkage so much as from the finishing. The Mexican lumber you're measuring is rough-hewn and not planed for a smooth finish. It's that finishing to give you a smooth surface that takes off the majority of the size difference. You can get rough lumber in the States as well, and it's much closer to the nominal sizes.

Originally in the USA, actual 2"x4" dimensions were also used. I think in the 1960s, 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" became the norm ? 🤠✌️

That's right, because in the US and Cda, they started "dressing" the building timbers; i.e., they shaved them clean for whatever reason (maybe too many workman's compensation claims for slivers?).

We get the "swarming termites", millions of them fly around after they've finished off our less than described lumber. Our neighbor's pools are covered in black with them. In Hawaii the firemen won't lean any of the walls because of them. Ogden Nash wrote a poem about termites: "Some primal termite knocked on wood, and tasted it, and found it good. And that is why your Cousin Mae fell through the parlor floor today." 😁😁😎😎👍👍💙💙
@JCTravelStories

Love the poem! Reminds me of having gotten sued many years ago. It wasn't cousin Mae, it was a tenant who fell through the deck. Allstate insurance won the case. She faked it to create a lawsuit. :)

I’m very familiar with these kind of projects in Mexico and termites always find their favourite wood. If I were to make a suggestion I think you should take the pine 4x4’s and 2x4’s back and trade them in for ether cedar or Guanacaste. Guanacaste is probably a little cheaper. It will save you having to rebuild your storage room again in a few years. You can treat pine with a product to penetrate the wood so the termites don’t eat it but after a number of years they will still eat up your cabinets. They won’t touch the cedar or Guanacaste. A lot of the older homes in Mexico have beams made with Guanacaste and are still solid after hundreds of years. Happy building 😊

Thank you for the advice. I believe it is good advice …. However, I have a different plan. If you notice there is a lot of concrete outside in front of the workshop. I poured it several years ago with the thought that when it becomes too difficult for Lynn to do the stairs to our upstairs bedroom, I’ll expand the workshop area to make a master bedroom on the first floor. Those old cupboards lasted 18 years. We are 79. Do the math. How long do those workshop 4X4s need to last? :)

@@JCTravelStoriesyes I should have known you thought it out well. Treating the soil will probably solve the problem and you can always give them another dose in a few years. I love how you care well for your beautiful wife. What a great example you are. I’m returning to my home in Mazatlán in about 2 months to rebuild my kitchen. Yes the termites are chewing as we speak. I used pine plywood to build the cabinets 17 years ago. I treated the wood and it was good for 15 years but this time I’m planning to use cedar. I better drill some holes too as you did. I can’t wait to return to Mexico ❤

Spray the window screens on your RV with good bug spray weekly and that will cut down on flys (and other winged insects) hanging around trying to get in.
@JCTravelStories
@JCTravelStories 2 ай бұрын
So …. You are ok with breathing the bug spray sprayed on your incoming fresh air? I’ll have to think about that plan. Actually, we have very good fitting screens. They don't come in there. Mostly the screen door frame. Maybe I’ll spray some there. :)
@huntmachine4505
@huntmachine4505 2 ай бұрын
@@JCTravelStories In a very short time after spraying we never really smelled anything. We used this bug spray trick mostly to thwart the "no-see-ums" that are prevalent in the Delaware seashore area where we used our RV. They are so small they can go right through regular sized screens making leaving your screens open at night while you sleep a no go. I believe it also repelled other insects like flys and mosquitos that like to hang around the screen door and fly in when you open it. Let's see if the trick cuts down on your fly count. We always used "deep woods" style bug spray with a good % of Deet.

How safe is your drive to the US and back? I’m looking at possibly relocating to Chapala. My wife thinks it’s to dangerous to drive to Chapala, she also doesn’t want me to own a car in Mexico.

We don’t drive anymore we fly. Driven many times in years past never had a problem. Know many other people who do drive. Don’t need to own a car in Mexico. Public transportation is very good expense due on cars and drive mini Mexicans don’t but it’s not because of the danger of driving. It’s because they can’t afford a car.
