Yes! My students come in apologizing ALL.THE.TIME. I tell them that no matter how they prepared or how they're feeling physically, they have to work with what they have now.

Wonderful uplifting advice, so practical. I know for myself when I just let it go and enjoy the pleasure of singing and not try to be perfect I actually sound better because it’s natural and not forced.

I learned this in the first year as an adult student. I have had three wonderful instructors. This video is almost verbatim of what the first 2 told me. This and making a cringe face when I make a mistake. I learned very quickly from my Korean vocal coach that it was a huge no no. I have been studying for 10 years now. I am so happy I found your channel and you are a good addition to my home warm ups and the strengthening of my voice when working at home.. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I have to say that this is exactly why I have never sung in front of anyone (except my voice teacher, because that is absolutely necessary). I just don't want to go there. I've been taking voice lessons (for reasons even I can't explain) for about 8 years now (starting from absolute scratch, so understandably not starting from a super-confident place), and I know I've improved tremendously, but to this day I'm still too much of a mental case to attempt to perform anything for real, no matter how much my teacher encourages me, because I know I wouldn't be satisfied with it, and I think being judged by myself and others would take all the fun out of it for me. I'm nuts, I know....

Thank you for talking about this phenomenon. I have had quite a lot of inner conflict because of what seems like to high of accolades from 4 different coaches over the years. I would want to know what they are hearing that they can help me improve and show me how to do that. I also am quite old and wonder if they, like me, think it doesn't matter anyway. How would you suggest I process this? Thank you. I love what you do here. I have just recently begun to follow your channel.

Very good points Freya! My daughter is 14 now, but has been competing in music festivals in which she get adjudicated for her performances of many different genres of songs that she prepares for months in advance. It has been good in the way that you mention as to learning that it is what it is in that moment...either good or bad. It's been bad too in that her music teacher also tells her that there is a certain competitor that's poised to win and then my daughter stops trying. Maybe she's trying to get my daughter to work harder, but it's having the opposite effect. How do you feel about young children being adjudicated and any tips on that whole space of vocal competitions? I'm going to show her this video for some inspiration!
