Recently bought the street fighter 2 legacy cab, had no issues putting that together, which seems to be the same setup as this. About those raised edges, they were annoying me too but it's easy enough to fix. There's 2 blocks that the control panel sits on which are attached to the side panels. Just take out those screws and measure how much you need to raise them for the control panel to sit flush with the edges when re-installed. I didn't even need to drill new holes, just got some wood screws the same size, as you'll need to pierce the inner vinyl/plastic coating into the panel. Takes a bit of effort to get going but as soon as you're through that it's easy, just make sure your screw are the same size as the originals as you don't want to be going too deep into the panel. :) My control panel now sits flush with the sides and it's much better, most time consuming part is getting the new positions of those wooden blocks accurate / marked out - a clamp sure comes in handy to hold them in place as you screw in the new screw holes.

I don't know what they're thinking with this redesign... the sides are a problem, the controls are now too close together, the monitor is too vertical, and the ears up top are ridiculous. They're getting better with the software, but man, they sure didn't do any testing when it came to the cabinet. I think I'll stick with my Gen 2 original, for now.

Yeah the software in the monitor are great. But they should’ve tested out this physical cabinet design before production. People in the comments are giving good ideas about raising the deck, etc. I’m sure the community will come up with some thing.

Great review! Mine arrived earlier in the week, no issues with the build for me. WiFi would have been great. I agree that the deck on the first release was better. I sold that one in anticipation of this release. Also, I’m 5’11 and the marquee blocks the screen if I stand to play. Overall we’re loving it. Great review!

Thanks Sean! I’m glad to know that the cabinet can be built the right way. Hopefully I get hooked up with another one. That’s true, I forgot to mention that marquee would block your vision if you’re standing. I’ve been sitting on those stools and they’re getting very uncomfortable.

My suggestion on the deck height is to glue together some washers to reach the correct height. Then glue them to the bottom of the deck on each hole. Then reinstall the screws. Haven’t done it yet on mine, but it should work. It may need longer screws though. 🖖🏼

I got mine today and as far as those screws at the top of the screen, I took the screws out and its perfectly fine now. Still have the other screws holding plus the speakers flush against the bezel with the other screws out but a flaw for sure! Great video brother! Blessings.....

I have an idea of doing a pcb swap. I would have to buy the whole cabinet, but I would take just the monitor out of the box and store the box and the rest of the parts away. I’ll unscrew the pcb and put it in my Costco monitor, I already unscrewed the old pcb to mod the cabinet to play game systems with an X-Arcade stick but I could always go back to the old deck. I want the new pcb for the stereo output and scanlines and extra games, but not the new cabinet. I’ll just leave the other parts in the box in case I need any of them in the future. I’ll store the box in an unused basement we have that nobody goes down into. Maybe I’ll take the speaker board and marquee and deck out as well but leave the other panels and riser behind.

Got mine yesterday. Came together like a breeze. The only Arcade1up cab I've ever had an issue putting together was the Star Wars, because I'm sure they sent me defective parts.

I had the same issue with the cabinet assembly, but was able to get the marquee/speaker assembly in place with the dowels by just accepting there would be pressure against it from the screws in the screen. All in all, I'm VERY happy with the Midway Legacy cabinet. I didn't have room for A1U cabinets until later in 2020, and missed out on the original Rampage cabinet. By all accounts this is an improvement for those games (3 player Rampage notwithstanding), and the screen quality, interface, and games seem improved overall for those that existed in Gen 1 cabinets before. I did manage to get an Atari 12-1 used late last year, and I'm actually considering an upgrade to the Atari Legacy eventually, but will hold off until I see reviews of that (I do like Quantum, which is missing from the newer 12-1 cabinet).

Quantum is great! Yeah I’ll be getting the new Atari legacy soon so be sure to check things out. Yeah you’re not missing out for not buying that original rampage cabinet. This is a much better offering as far as the games go with all the new settings. At least they fix those bugs.

I like that they went with more of a Midway arcade cabinet shape but that marquee location is bizarre. Hopefully someone releases aftermarket stuff to extend that.The deck also looks like it would bother me. I'm not sure how they missed on these design issues. Thanks for the review!

Try a flat top screw. In video it looked like the screws were round top screws. Maybe they meant to put flat top screws in box and forgot or put wrong ones. Maybe you used screws that were meant for somewhere else.

I actually bought another one at Walmart just to check it out, I had the same problem, but the same solution works. I remove the dowel rods from the marquee so I can get out of the way of the bezel.

I had trouble building this since I don’t really work with tools, but I got help and everything was fine. This arcade machine is perfect and I really like it. Me being a Mortal Kombat fan I am completely satisfied and never had a problem playing with the edges. Besides, Joust, Bubbles, Defender, Wizard Of Wor, Rampage, and the rest of the games are really great. My Dad also surprisingly told me Joust and Wizard of Wor were the main games he used to play in college. I don’t much care for root beer tapper, toobin, or paperboy but the demos are nice and make a nice decoration in my room. I’ve never really had the “Arcade Experience” since I was born in 2000 and not in the early seventies, so I find it to be a very wonderful machine. I’m a huge Atari fan and I also find Gauntlet to be a neat little game.

@@AtariAlive How do you unlock Noob saibot in MK3? To play as Noob Saibot, you must be playing against another human opponent. Pick Kano and, immediately before round 1 starts, hold Back + Low Punch + Low Kick + High Punch + Block. If done correctly, Kano should explode into Noob Saibot. the arcade version is harder, it was like always like that. its not like consoles or put in a secret code.

Great review! I got one of these ordered this week (I NEEDED Joust, Rampage, and Gauntlet!) I plan on doing the mods raising the control deck and possible modifying the screen angle and moving the marquee back as well. Should be pretty simple and I can trim the top of the marquee sides of the cabinet as well to look more normal (will have to repaint them if I do tho)

Ran into similar issue on the Capcom cabinet, piece of wood is supposed to be over the screws, its awkward at first but the edge of the speaker Bessel covers the screws, not supposed to hover above screws, like people below said the raised screws is what throws you off.

I think the screw holes are wrong on the boards. The boards aren’t made to go over the screws. On all the earlier cabinets you could remove the bezel easily even after you built the cabinet. I somehow got it together but I don’t know how I did it. But if I want to take the bezel off now I have to take apart the cabinet.

I noticed the same thing with the speaker panel, but was able to somehow force it all in there. For the control panel wings, I am considering some spacers to raise it up a quarter inch. Sucks that they got those two things wrong. Because otherwise it's a solid cab. Really like the new game settings and ability to pause.

They are coming out with a more expensive version of it with one more game that’s not that good, for a lot more money. I think I’m good with this one until they put Mortal Kombat four on a cab.

Great honest review. If you shaved the sides of the monitor board off, you could lean the monitor back a bit and this would also address the issue with the speaker board not connecting (leave it separate)? I want this cab, but might regret buying it if next year they come out with a new Midway Legacy cab with better games selection. I had heard they will offer the Legacy cabs over and over again. Dear Eric had no problem putting cabinet together and does look good however after 1 night playing on defender my hand was sore but worse than that the reverse button storted working intermittently , has anyone else had any problems with the buttons !! Andy

Hi Andy, no I’ve never had any problems with the buttons. You might just have a bad button which should be easily fixed, that’s the good news but you’re gonna have to replace it. I would start a ticket or you can go on Amazon and find a comparable button. They’re easy to switch out.

Easy fix for the raised edges. Add some bushings underneath and get some longer screws to raise the deck up.

I agree with putting it together being harder than previous cabs, particularly the 2 front panels as they do not drop in from the top like they used to. You are forced to try to line up the slots while balancing them on the finished side as you are trying to attach the other side panel. It's very awkward and mine still doesn't seem like it's solid after completion. I can push one of the sides in and out and there is a slight gap between the left side and the control deck...

had the same problem with the top. I haven't had too much issue with the sides but I did have to sand down the bottom edge of the clear deck protector because that seemed really sharp to me and dug into my hand.

Disappointed as it took about an hour to assemble and the unit was dead on arrival. It worked for a second while i moved some wires but as soon as I moved the cabinet into it’s final position it doesn’t come back on

Just got my MK Cab. The only issue I have is the bottom base and front panel with the coin slot decal doesn't line up together, so the front is open until I figure out a way to fix it

Replace your joysticks with Sanwa JLF's and either get Joystick extensions for the standard Shaft that comes with them, or buy separate Extended Shafts and stop placing your Joystick hand on the Control Deck. . . The raised Joystick will help you keep your hand up. I have the MVC cab, obviously with the previous Control Deck, but because of the Extended Shafts I'm using I never place my hand on the control Deck anymore... Maybe that can help solve the problem? .... I mean grated we do it out of habit, but the Arcade Control Deck is no different than a Keyboard in there is proper posture to take in to account...but you know how that goes.

Really great video, kind of weird that Arcade 1UP changed the design of the cabinet and not improving anything. Instead they FK it up. This is a 600$ (without taxes in canada) so hell no. The one that I'm waiting for is Killer Instinct. I hope that they see all of the feedback for those Legacy cabinet and don't use that design. May is coming up and still no release date for that one?

Hey thanks a lot. This new design sort of replicates what the original machine look like. I’m not sure it works in a three-quarter scale cabinet though. If you’re standing up the marquee comes out so far it blocks your view of the screen, I forgot to mention that. I still like having it, even though I have not put it together correctly.

Yeah that does suck, but I know they have another Mortal Kombat cabinet coming at some point. They were actually supposed to be two Mortal Kombat releases this year. Maybe the address that issue on the next attempt. Until then, this is a great cabinet.

I bought an arcade1up Star Wars, Ms Pac-Man, Space Invaders and two Partycades. All of them had issues when assembling. Screw holes not matching up, plastic protectant that you had to take a razor blade to get it all off. And one of the deck plates was completely screwed up

I had the same fitment issue between the marquee and monitor. I had to actually remove the 4 screws at the top of the monitor bezel for the pieces to fit flush together. Ridiculous.

Lol, you may be right. This cabinet did help me consolidate my cabinets, but the raise the edges are a head scratcher. I’m pretty sure they didn’t play this cabinet before they Greenlit the production. It’s OK for casual play but if you’re serious it’s terrible.

Thanks for the review. Definitely looks like they pulled a bezel from the wrong stack. The top screws were definitely in the wrong place. I did a bit of research, and checked some images of the real, commercial version of Mortal Kombat II, and it also has the raised edges, at the ends of the control panel. Which means, this cabinet is closer to being an more accurate 3/4 replica (interpretation) of a commercial machine. However, there is a quick fix you can make. Just make a couple of shims to put under each end of the control panel, and drill matching bolt holes. Oh, you're going to need longer bolts, to reach the threaded fasteners in the deck mount plates, on the side panels. Yes, you'll also need a gap filler for the front edge. This will allow the control panel to lay flush with the side panel edge.

@@EvrydayErik Oh, I forgot to mention, when I reported numbness in my left hand, my doc asked if I was placing the side of my hand on a table, or desk. When I told her I played a lot of arcade machines, she told me to stop resting my hands on the control panel, and hold the stick, as if it were a scalpel, and keep the wrists up. same for the buttons side. The numbness went away, after a while, and now, I'm used to playing like that, so the ridges don't bother me, at all, now.

I'm basically a blind man so I noticed this right off the bat the one with the closest to accurate sound was defender everything else was pretty processed. that's very strange considering how a lot of these are 16-bit games anyway. It was very distorted.

Wanted to defend the new Midway Legacy cab for a min as someone who had the original MK cab.. I agree the new cab might be too blue, the “ears” or “wings” by the marquee is the right design approach but they overdid it and the marquee should sit a little more fwd.. the marquee itself IS a bit washed out looking. The screen is a touch too vertical now, and yup mine has the round screws top of the screen too so it won’t sit flush. And yes- the player one raised cab edge could be uncomfortable for some. Taller people will have to sit or hunch a bit more than before due to the protruding marquee and vertical screen. All this sucks. However--- 1) this has the BOE monitor. Much clearer than before and no blue tint. The tint just ended up on the cabinet side graphics now lol 2) the monitor I think might be the correct aspect ratio now, it wasn’t before. 3)stereo sound! 4)volume control more than off, loud, or blaring 5)scan lines if you want them! 6)adjustable difficulty settings for all the games, individually, and it saves your settings 7)the extra games, some of them are really fun like rampage and root beer tapper 8)the overall ‘look’ of the cab is more authentic now. It’s still not 💯 but it’s closer. 9)it does at least come with the riser and lit marquee 🔥 overall- I agree they botched up a few things, it’s not perfect- but I think a lotta folks are ignoring all the positive changes and just focusing on the negatives. Will be popping in 4lb springs and octagonals soon (why didn’t they do that yet too)

Thanks for the feedback, yeah this monitor is much better, less blue, I wish they would’ve put some of that blue back on the side panels. I do have to say though going to my local arcade the older model combat might look more like the arcade version. I am a fan of a clearer image. All of the new features on this cabinet are fantastic. So is that the issue? The springs are round instead of flat? I don’t recall the speaker board ever bumping up against the screws on the bezel before. The raised ridge on the left of the left controls still bothers me a little bit. I’m glad I have it, and I can’t wait to get Mars attacks in the Atari 12 and one and will review those as well.

That's pretty lame how they also had to add a WB 2021 copyright on the lit marquee. I bought the lit marquee from Arcade1up for the Gen 1 cab last year and it doesn't have anything in the lower left corner. Overall I definitely think the original wave Mortal Kombat's are definitely the superior version if you are just into having a Mortal Kombat cab despite there only being one speaker. I prefer the old deck and marquee placement far more.

While I have bought this cabinet, it still resides in storage, awaiting more space. (Oh, the dreaded curse of home arcades.) I will have to take this deck issue into assessment, once it is assembled. Early thoughts are to put spacers under the screw holes to lift the deck. Though, in practice, I bet it won't work.

Yeah, I hope yours assembles better than mine. It’s basically 50-50 whether you run into the issue I did. As far as the raised ridges on the sides of the deck, many people have left great comments and suggestions here on how to fix that. I got my notification that Tron is on its way. Evryday Erik, Fun review! I found it interesting that Arcade1up chose Paperboy for this cab over something like Robotron 2084. They already implemented a 2-stick control scheme for Rootbeer Tapper, so I think it would've been a no-brainer to include a game that worked better with the existing cabinet control scheme. Don't get me wrong, I loves me some Arcade Paperboy (with the bike handle controller), but Robotron would've worked better for this cabinet. I have such a limited amount of space now that I unfortunately can't pick up any of the Legacy cabinets without sacrificing what I want to add. I want the Dragon's Lair cab, a Racing cab, a lightgun cab, and a Pinball. That'll pretty much do it for my space limit. Thanks for the review and have a great one! vgv

Hey, thank you. Yeah I’m a big Robotron fan, I would’ve personally prefered that over paper boy. Of course, you see my paper boy skills in this video. Also I think defender and paper boy have a similar aesthetic. I got this to try to save space because yes I want Dragon slayer, without putting my phone in the back of it, a light gun game, and I have Mars attacks on order. Eric Hemingway, I love my Ms. Pac-Man Partycade I got it last Christmas from QVC, and if the quality of that one is any indication, then I can imagine the Defender Partycade is just as impressive. If I didn't already have an Arcade1up Defender 3/4 scale cab, I would've picked it up. Unfortunately (but fortunately, as it's a dream as well), Arcade1up put out a Defender variant of the Midway Legacy before their Defender Partycade and I picked the Legacy up. It fixes one of the issues the Mortal Kombat variant had and eliminates the raised edges on the sides of the control panel. And though Midway Legacy's Defender doesn't have the original control scheme like the Partycade, I don't know who over at Arcade1up created the new layout, but they should be commended. I played a lot of Defender and Stargate in the Arcades and I can't tell you how easy it was to conform to the new control scheme Arcade1up came up with. I'm having just as much fun and scoring just as well with the new button layout. I think I would've still picked up the Defender Partycade first if the Midway Legacy Defender variant came out later than it, but I'm SO HAPPY Arcade1up was able to nail a new control scheme, though alternate, that plays as good as the Arcade :) Plus, having two joysticks on the Midway Legacy makes Rootbeer Tapper an absolute dream to play, something unfortunately the Partycade can't replicate. Serving drinks with a button, though playable, never really felt quite right to me. Still, the Defender Partycade is an Amazing choice for Defender fans :) vgv

Yeah, the scan lines add the horizontal lines that those old CRT TV screens had. They end up making things look a little more pixelated, it’s subtle. Despite the nostalgia, I don’t use them.

I think this is the most vivid screen. The very original Mortal Kombat cab had a taller screen which stretched the characters more vertically which probably is more arcade accurate. This screen is more like the Costco screen. But this screen is the best screen And we have scanlines.

Go on the website and request a ticket (report the issue) for a new joystick. You can get replacement joysticks and probably better ones on Amazon. They should go in pretty well. I think “ETA Prime” had videos on this sort of thing. I have an experienced this, but it would be annoying. I don’t have any quick fix solutions.

Has this already been pointed out? At about 2:10 it looks like the screen board could have been slid closer to the camera about a screw head's length. I think that would have made it fit unless there's a detail I'm not thinking of.

If you follow the screw holes and put the screws in, The boards won’t match up and they butt against the other screws making it impossible to build. Some people have this problem and some people don’t. I took out I think the dowel rods so I could slide the board away from the screws.

Have you been able to unlock and save the secret characters in UMK3 on the legacy cab? Heard people are having trouble saving them, and they’re using either ejb or kombat kodes method and saving with initials. Hope this isn’t a software issue...

This is incredible. This cab is a piece of shi$. I’m sorry. The screw and assembly issue, the raised CP edge, the blue sides (wtf, why in the world would I want blue side art) , the straight up and down monitor, crappy joysticks and buttons. This cabinet is fine for my mom who knows nothing about arcades, but for any half enthusiast , it’s no good. There are some great features though and good changes they made. Great video , review done well.

Regarding the raised edge issue... can you configure the controls to be swapped over? So that when playing alone you use the right controls. That should cover the issue for 90% of the time.

I just checked, there’s no way to switch that controls. If you want to fight from the left do you have to use the left stick and if you want to fight from the right you have to use the right stick, you can’t swap them

I HAVE THE FIX FOR THE CONTROL DECK ISSUE FOLKS!!! SO... my Capcom Legacy cab was on my doorstep when I got home last night. I put it together and resolved this design issue, SUPER easy-peasy. I now have the control deck perfectly flush with the top edges and there's just enough clearance to the bottom of the bezel artwork that it comes right up to it without cutting anything off. All that is needed is a power drill with a 7/64" bit, thumb tack or nail to mark your first pilot hole and a flat ruler. That's it. For a PERFECTLY FLUSH control deck surface, on the D or left panel, measure from the yellow taped top edge to the top of the J bracket 1 & 1/4" & 1 cm, or EXACTLY 21 cm. Do this and you can get it perfectly flushed with the cab. If you'd like, drop me your email and I will send you some pics that go along with the steps.

Just bought one of these. They had one left in stock at Wal-Mart so I went for it. Still in box, am going to assemble it tomorrow and find out if it was worth the $400. I checked the box and it didn't mention anything about the riser included in the package. Am hoping that I won't have to buy it separately.

@@EvrydayErik thanks! I already assembled it and put some play time in. Good memories of UMK3 when I would play it at the pizza restaurant as a kid. The cabinet came together beautifully. I found out there is no riser but had a computer desk chair lying around that mates perfectly with the height of the joystick panel. The issue many have about their hand resting on the edge of the cabinet didn't really bother me much, but yes a flat surface across the board would have been a much better design. Overall I'm very thrilled to have this arcade unit in my apartment. Good entertainment, bar none.

@@petermacnab1871 yeah there are a few quirks. I watched a bunch of reviews and they all mentioned the same issues. I have not tried this yet with 2 players. The side panel on the left side isn't really an issue for me, but of course that is subjective. The games that come with the machine are hit or miss. Some play just fine, but others like Paperboy are virtually unplayable on joystick format. For the money I rate this cabinet a 3 out of 5. Heard rumors that arcade 1up is unveiling an updated version of this unit next year. If you can hold out I'm sure a lot of people who bought this one would suggest that you save your cash for that one.

I play with them on. It does help a little bit to make it look like the original game. You never really going to capture the look of the Crt screen and the refresh rate. The real reason I picked this one up is because I can consolidate my Mortal Kombat games with other games. I know they’re coming out with an improved version of this, that might be something to look into.

Same thing for me. I left all of the screws and the white plastic mounting bracket off of the monitor until both side panels were on. Then I put the brackets and screws in. I got all of the screws started before tightening them. It worked, but it was not easy.

I'm happy that A1Up kinda helped to kickstart the hobby but man... MAAAAAAN, they just don't know how to make quality cabs, or don't care to lol. Prices shot way up and quality remains questionable at best. I stand by what i been saying for months now. Recroom Masters offered the BEST option for mid size cabinets with their Jr model. Taller, wider, much better materials and they shut down from shipping problems and it absolutely pisses me off lol. I been looking for a replacement company but everyone i look at is either using cheap controls/materials or is sky high.

I'm hearing that the version of MK1 that is found on these cabinets (both this one and the original MK-only cabinet) don't actually have the hidden character Reptile. Can you confirm or deny this?

I believe this does not have reptile in Mortal Kombat 1. At least I can’t get it to work.

@@EvrydayErik Interesting, are you sure you are fulfilling the requirements to get him? They are kinda ludicrous in the arcade and there's a lot of misinformation floating around about how to go about it. Firstly it needs to be done in 1-player mode. You need to fight 40 consecutive battles. Once you've clocked up 40 battles, the next time you fight on The Pit stage, you should see silhouettes flying across the moon in the background. When you see this, you need to win the match double flawless without using block, and then perform a fatality (note that uppercutting them into The Pit does NOT count as a fatality in MK1). Note that trying to do this with Sonya or Scorpion is pretty hard because you need to use block to do their fatalities, so I'd recommend another character like Sub-Zero or Johnny Cage who have easy fatalities. Only after you've done all of that correct will you be able to fight Reptile. Whether you are successful in fighting Reptile or not, the 40-match counter will reset, so you'll need to do another 40 fights before getting another shot at it. The counter will also reset if you switch the machine off or it's reset, it doesn't retain the counter (so if you switch it off after each play session, it's entirely possible you'll never see it). I don't have the machine itself, but I can see it's Revision 4.0, so Reptile *should* be there. If you can spare the time I'd appreciate you having a go at it and sharing the results!
