"We're not going to turn it into an open-concept nightmare". With that one statement you just became my favorite person on KZbin! 🤣🤣 I also love history and believe in preserving things how they were made. So it absolutely infuriates me when people gut one of these old Victorian homes to make it more "modern".
@ShannonMakes13 күн бұрын
fully agreed 😭😭
@Trufriend6113 күн бұрын
I agree wholeheartedly! My idea of modernizing an old home is to update the heating/cooling/electrical and NOT to rip out all the walls to make it 'open concept'. Walls and doors were designed with a purpose, to create barriers for noise, privacy and every once in a while slamming for dramatic effect! 😚 ~Chris

I think the native plants landscaping is such a great idea! You'll have tons of birds and butterflies once it's all established. Although the first year you'll probably have to defend it pretty aggressively from deer. When you find a landscaper to help you plan it, don't forget to talk to them about protecting it when you're not around.

My goal for this year is to be a bit selfish. I know that sounds bad, but I am horrible people pleaser. I want to work on being more authentic to myself and learn to set boundaries. I want to learn to speak my mind and speak up for myself. I want to do things that make ME happy.
@ShannonMakes14 күн бұрын
No, not at all - I proudly tell people I'm quite selfish! In fact, I'm pretty sure I said it proudly in my "Assumptions" video... (Aha! Yes, I did... timestamped link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnbPaqV4aMpmoNUsi=6FebicslkVAvta4e&t=596 ). It's really a health goal! I waited until waaaay too late I my life to decide it was okay to say "no" to things that I just didn't want to do without having a "good excuse". The simple fact that's it not a way I want to spend my time and/or money is a good enough reason all by itself. I will warn you that some people who may have been taking advantage a bit may be less than pleased to see you find your voice. Most will simply be a little puzzled for a short period of time while the relationship shifts and resettles into something you both enjoy 100% of the time. Wishing you luck and a new happy life of choosing to prioritize yourself at least as often as you prioritize others.

I just found recently videos on "peg weaving" which is up my alley with yards of scraps I didn't know what to do with. The loom itself is fairly simple to make, the weaving is as simple or complicated as I choose. The bonus is the loom can travel, can be used in your lap if nothing else is available. The antiques are often less value in monetary terms but do have some fascinating information on how people lived.
@discoj711214 күн бұрын
I honestly love the fact that some antiques are worthless or close to it. It gives so much more freedom to enjoy them in creative ways. The fancy, valuable stuff is neat, too, but the common objects can be so fun to disassemble, alter, and make art and decor from. A historic touch without the guilt of destroying something important, because there are hundreds of better examples out there already.

I have started a project with fabric samples my friend gave me, and I am working on it while my honey is in the hospital after an eight hour surgery for cancer. This project is helping me get through long days at the hospital while he is recuperating from surgery. It really helps me get my mind in a better place while I am clipping fabric to octagons and then basting the material around the paper. As for the cozy New Year’s resolution you spoke about from your friend, I brought along my grandmother’s wool quilt and a warm cozy throw, to use in the motel room I am staying in while my honey is in the hospital. I am so glad I brought these things with me, as it makes my room feel like home.

Thanks Shannon! Yes....agree...we should all make at least SOME effort at reducing our plastic waste. It is a challenge. One thing I recently realized is that the use of acrylic markers (brush or foam nibs) is better for me (I mostly use them for my more "fun & playful art" and to use in any artwork where I may want use acrylic tube paint, but they aren't really a substitute for all acrylic artists.) The reason is that there's NOTHING to rinse down the sink when you're done. And some markers are refillable (Molotow and Montana & others) or you can buy empty ones and select the nib of your choice. I don't typically use acrylic in my serious artwork...I'm mostly a watercolor person. But I have bought a couple of marker sets for fun...and they are fun! 🤩 The down side is that I won't be able to refill them when they're empty and not sure whether the pen parts can be recycled. It's always something. 🫤

I love your sewing content. The costume for your corgi was spectacular. Also the hobbit robe. What a beautiful piece. I love how you get an idea, and then run with it.

I was actually planning on a creative challenge for myself this year - to knit a new pair of socks (either for myself or anyone who currently needs a pair) or some other knitted item every month. I have chilly feet and this Christmas I was the only one who didn't get anything for my feet, and you can never have enough wool socks. (On a side note, I hit my good-better-best goal of crocheting slippers for everyone for Christmas.)

I really enjoy your content and anxiously await more house refurbishing videos this year! I've long wanted to bring back to life a forgotten house making it a home; I'm just going to have to accomplish that through you! Every year I make the same plan...to look for blessings. It's amazing the things that show up in your world that blesses you in a way that you would never expect! So, here's to blessings where you least expect them! See you soon at the house!

I love the resolution of being more whimsical. Please include that in your videos, because I would appreciate ideas on how to do that myself! Especially on a budget with as many re-used and recycled materials as possible! I would love to renovate/redecorate our rec-room to make it more whimsical and fantasy inspired. My husband and I play d&d and other ttrpg with our friends and have turned a back store room of our house into the rec room for those occasions and it very much feels like an unfinished back store room.

For Canelle's bed, as she likes to be on your level, you will need to have it raised up which will allow you to integrate some drawer storage under her bed. Thinking of the drawer steps on bunkbeds. I love the idea of the tunnel for her as well. My fun resolution will be to work on my calligraphy and using my fountain pens and fun inks that I have.

Shannon, I am looking forward to all of those wonderful plans you have for 2025. Especially everything and anything hobbitesk. LOL It's so earthy and magical. Which so many things in nature has a magical and whimsical way about it. Can't wait to hear about the history of the house. To me the value of the the antiques has always been the joy they spark in me. There beauty of detail and the wonder of how they lasted for more than a life time. If they have a monitary value that's just a cherry on top. May we all be blessed with a brighter, healthier and a year of fond memories, to carry with us through the years to come. Keep doing you because that's exactly what I love the most about your videos. 🫶🤗

Reminds of the time I was compelled to buy a coat at an antique store. A woman’s name was printed on a label in the coat. It was from a high end department store in San Francisco. I googled the women’s name and found out she was an exchange teacher in the 20s and wrote a book about her experience in England. I got a copy of the book on eBay. It was amazing to learn her story and to now own the coat she bought in 1955. The coat is a beautiful Swing coat made of mullin.

I think you would love the paint inlays for future furniture fixes, they are beautiful and doable. 4 steps. 1 paint first coat then 2nd paint on wet paint then lay down the inlay. 3 Let dry, 4 wet and peal the inlay.

I for one enjoyed all aspects of your channel (s). I do enjoy the renovations, but enjoy seeing your projects - sewing/furniture etc. You are so talented, so why limit yourself. I like the idea of bringing others on to show case their talents. I wouldn't mind seeing any crazy quilting you would like to do. I also enjoy seeing what you can share of your circus life, so very interesting. Looking forward to a whimsical new year of Shannon Makes!!!!

I’ve always wanted to make a crazy quilt using velvet, silk, satin, lace, with a variety of embroidery stitches and designs, so I would like to see how you do that. I love Transcend Furniture, so a collab would be cool. I’m an avid genealogist and former archeologist, so house/family history would be great. So many wonderful ideas!

I like your circus videos, but I've always assumed that you were too busy working to film and to have a bit more privacy in your personal life. As a crafter, I'm def here for the makes, but as a fellow theatre person, I love the backstage stuff as well. It's really cool to see the acrobatic side of theatre rather than the classical music side that I'm immersed in!

OMG, YASSSSSS. The quilt? Yes! The corgi "secret tunnel" to side bed? YESSSS! If only one of these happens this year, I sincerely hope it's the secret whimsical tunnel. I was so excited when you shared that idea with us. Can I also suggest (assuming you didn't already think of this) to somehow make a whimsical partial roof cache that serves as a side table for you, so you don't lose that functionality entirely? I'm looking forward to all your videos this year, but whimsical hobbit hole side bed project is for sure the one I'm looking forward to MOST!

There will be some sort of bedside table situation for sure - the current situation is severely lacking, and I'd love to improve on it as part of the project!
