As an old house renovator, I have used the window film many times. I will add to Shannon's advice by saying install the two sided tape and before you peel the second side off, use a tool like a spoon to really burnish the tape onto the surface. Warming the tape a bit with the blowdryer before burnishing helps too if the room is quite cold.

On the water consumption issue, my mom had a similar issue and it turned out to be a leak on the line coming into her house. Hope it’s an easy fix but with old houses …
@SamIAm3838616 күн бұрын
I thought of an external pipe too. I've heard of leaks going unnoticed for a long time from sprinkler piping in a yard because there's no runoff. An old house probably doesn't have yard sprinklers but it could be a different exterior pipe.

Ok… and maybe you know this too, we live in an old 107 year old home and we were paying such high electricity bills because of our windows. Of course we put plastic on our windows until we could afford new windows, and when the wind blew and we live in Iowa that plastic bowed out and it reminded me of Santa‘s big fat belly lol lol . The window company that installed our new windows, told us is around the Framework of the windows inside our home along with the mop boards on the outside walls, caulk with clear caulk. And before we did this, even with the new windows, you could still feel the wind seeping through the sides and on the mop boards on the floor. It truly truly made a huge huge difference! Make sure that you chalk around all the doors in your home as well. TY for bringing us along as you renovate your beautiful old home.🩵💚🤍.

Welcome home!!! In 1979 i remember the window film was a new product at least to me. I hot kits for my efficiency apartment. Instead of tape, it came with plastic strips that had adhesive on the back. The strip had a groove/channel and then a smaller strip of plastic that pressed into the groove, holding the plastic between both strips. It worked great and could be re-used another year. The fown side was that the strips were not pretty.

This past Spring our water heater failed. The basement was wet but not enough water to even kick the sump pump on. Our water bill came saying that we used 5000 gallons of water! Our water prices doubled a year ago, so we track our usage & have been at lowest possible payment ever since. Then BAM our meter said we filled a swimming pool(no we don’t have a pool but yes, our neighbor does. And no, he didn’t steal our water😂) From that meter reading our entire basement would’ve been filled. We never found a leak after replacing the water heater . So, i definitely understand getting a letter like that.
@ShannonMakes17 күн бұрын
oh my god... were you able to contest it? Did you have to pay it? Do you have a faulty meter? How's the swimming pool?
@chrissyfrancis895217 күн бұрын
@ yes we had to pay it! We never even found where 5000 gallons of water went! They kept asking us to check for leaks. We didn’t have any. Somehow the water heater failing dumped 5000 gallons of water that had to have gone in a drain. Our basement would’ve been filled to the door with that much water. Several $100 (plus a $1600 water heater) later, we haven’t had any other issues. I can’t actually hear the meter/pump running when water is turned on. I would’ve heard it if a pipe broke. It was insane! We were watching our usage so closely for so long to save money, then ended up paying the most we ever did in 1 month. I hope you find your leak & get it fixed. Such a waste of water & $

@@Lucinda_Jackson Yes. We have cameras & he’s good friends with my husband. Plus, like I said I can hear the water meter/pump every time it’s on bc it’s right under my living room. It’s how I knew a pipe burst during a freeze once. Water was running & no one was using it. I still don’t know how 5000 gallons ran without me hearing the meter. Now, we’re very good at checking the actual meter a couple times a week to make sure it’s not running when it shouldn’t be.

@billiepiche832217 күн бұрын
@@spellwithane6888, my family is Dutch, and they're all about opening the windows too. However, we live in Canada, where the temperatures can drop to -50*C. I can assure you that no amount of fresh air is worth opening the window at those temperatures! The window would likely be frozen shut anyway. And if not, I'd be worried about it freezing open! Not to mention, it would take hours for my heating system to re-warm the house to a comfortable temperature. I'm not wealthy enough to do that every day! So we just suffer with stuffy air, but we will definitely open the doors and windows when the weather is nice enough. Luckily most modern houses are built well enough to not need the plastic over the windows. The house I grew up in is about the same age as Shannon's, and we definitely needed to put up plastic (and exterior storm windows) to keep it livable. It was just how life was.

Oh boy , nice to come home to a pile of snow isn’t it. Poor you after all that traveling,to have to shovel your way in. It’s always fun to work with you two. Canelle is so cute , makes me want to get one just like her. Glad you’re back in Canada.

When was Minnesota?? Thanksgiving?? I’m such a dolt! I even watched the Christmas Market, and love seeing you do your jobs! I’m deathly afraid of heights, so I live vicariously through you! 😂

According to my daughter who studies heritage management, a high gloss is what is used in that period.

Proves they were just as sensible back then about painting trim as we are (for the most part, lol) today!

Little One loves the snow!!! That was so cute!!! By the way, LOVE all the arctic cold you all have been sending us in the states (just kidding, of course!) Sorry to hear about your leak. That's not going to be fun tracking that down! But installing heaters upstairs I bet will be a major plus! Are you both going to be able to work with all that snow? Looking forward to what you start working on next! Take care, Shannon!

You always hit the ground running. Fantastic that you're snug on 1 floor now. Good luck finding and stopping the leak.

Straight pins from sewing can be used if the plastic starts to sag. The pins make such small holes they won't damage the woodwork. You may have known this already 😊

Checking in and looking forward to another visit with you and yours. Something off topic: Just saw a brief visit/interview at John K. King Used and Rare Books in Downtown Detroit. It’s not too far from the theaters. If you ever come back to Detroit, and have the time, you might enjoy the atmosphere there. Not your every day bookstore.

Hi Shannon, Welcome back. Thank you for the update. Did you find the water leak? I have had that happen when I was away. It was a toilet that was running..... After that happened, I had a shut off put on the toilet and now turn it off whenever I leave for a period of time. Liz

Bravo ! À bientôt ! ☀️🌺🌺🌺☀️

I have never seen anyone do the windows with plastic like that. When I was growing up in the 70s we had windows with only one glass but we had lose windows that were put on the inside during winter, and made it a 2 glass window that couldnt be opened.(from Sweden)

In America those are called storm windows. My old house still has some, on the older windows

Loved watching Canelle wiggle her way across the snow on her back! I just finished covering some of our windows and a patio door with plastic today and I don't use a blow dryer either. They are windows we don't look out from much, so no big deal if there's a few wrinkles. It's worth the effort as there is a definite difference in room temperature on the main floor! It's gonna get below zero here for a few days! I hope you found the leak quickly and it was something minor.

Oh! That exuberant snow rolling!!! I swear, Shannon, I would watch your videos anyway, but Cannelle makes everything so amazing. I adored the way she looked up at you from the fainting couch, too. What a character she is! I have to get plastic on my windows this week, but it's really awkward doing it by myself so I'm procrastinating... well, I suppose I could say I'm **scheduling** it for when I have help! That sounds way better than procrastinating. **sheepish look**

Yep, there are snow drifts Canelle could run across, or use to roll on while sliding downhill. Sure she's not a skier?? 😄 W Exterior window gaps on the storm windows could be filled with rolled bubble wrap, or better yet thermal covered bubble wrap. It is soft enough to stop breakage, strong enough to keep the panes in place. Yeah, it may look a bit tacky on close inspection, but who cares? There are thermal emergency sheets I found in the local dollar store last fall (amid camping stuff) that I put on two windows along the bottom. It's ok for reducing cold draughts. Canelle loves the snow, although like a dog I had, not so great "helping" snow shoveling. 😼❄️Mine kept jumping so he shoved the snow back to where it was cleared. Not much help, especially when laughing more than digging. 😂 Quilting may be a necessity j/k.

High gloss oil based paint for the window frames and trims. Far easier to clean and keep clean.

Ah yes, I remember the days of putting plastic on the windows. One window had plastic on it year-round. It was a HUGE picture window with a 6 inch deep sill that was in bad need of repair. But since we rented (and the landlord refused to fix it), we slapped 2 coats of plastic on it and just left it. At one point, we even cut out and reinforced a small kitty access hole so they could continue to lay on the sill! I do NOT miss having to do that every year.

i’m originally from Massachusetts and i’ve been in Alabama for almost 7 years! Have not seen any snow ❄️ except for a few lonely flakes like in a snow ❄️ globe. zero accumulation. So seeing the roof avalanche at the hardware store and sold out shovels sparked some memories 🤩🤪🥰glad to see you Phil and Canal back in action! OMG! what a cute 🥰 victorian fainting couch, or is it a divan? 😂❤🎉Warm wishes at least for a prosperous new year!
