Big & Rich - 8th of November Documentary: A True Story of Pain & Honor

On November 8th, 1965, the 173rd Airborne Brigade on Operation Hump, War Zone D in Vietnam were ambushed by over 1200 V.C. Forty-eight American soldiers lost their lives that day. Severely wounded and risking his own life, Lawrence Joll, a medic, was the first living black man since the Spanish-American War to receive the United States Medal of Honor for saving so many lives in the midst of battle that day. Our friend, Nialls Harris, retired 25 years, United States Army (the guy who gave Big Kenny his top hat) was one of the wounded who lived. This song is his story. Caught in the action of 'kill or be killed' - 'greater love hath no man to lay down his life for a friend.'

I received a card this week in honor of Veterans Day. My coworkers and colleagues all signed it. That was a first for me and it really got to me. I remember bloody baby dolls being thrown at us and people spitting. Giving honor to this story also means a great deal. Thank you

Mr. Harris my father was a Marine in Vietnam in '66 and '67 when he was wounded in the A shau valley. I myself am a retired Marine who served not only in Somalia, Haiti and Kosovo but also 2 deployments to Iraq and 3 to Afghanistan. I was there, on the last chopper out. I met B & R, went on stage here in Albuquerque. I remember parts of the battle like it was yesterday. God bless Don Bliss & the pilots that got us out of there.

my father-in-law Roy Ehlers and his older brother William went to the war in Vietnam together and landed in the same platoon when he was wounded a medic chopper was coming in to take him home .... "my brother where is he?" they told him they believed he was captured HE said I'm not leaving him behind ran back into the jungle found his brother picked him up and told him "I'm not living without you " and carried Him all the way back to the chopper they came home safe and sound both retired......thank you for everything you have done for the ones that are still there the P.o.W and M.I.A`s you are not forgotten with much respect ....thank you

I'd heard this song before, but this is the first time I've seen the documentary. I'm a combat vet and was in Vietnam in 69 and 70 with the 4th Infantry Division. I was also wounded in an ambush, so this brought back a flood a memories. Thanks to everyone who worked on this project, it meant a lot to me and I'm sure to the families who's sons and husbands didn't make it home. God Bless you and those who served.

As a daughter to a man that served in Vietnam, you have all my respect. Both my parents were in the US Army. My father was in Vietnam as a Cobra pilot, my mother was personnel in Desert Storm and I was in OIF. I am fortunate to live in the DC area (only cause I can visit the Memorials). I'm now 43 years old and I tear up every time I hear this song. I'm not a veteran, my father was, and I have several friends that are older than I am that served in Vietnam. They can't make it through the song without breaking down. My gratitude for the sacrifice of the men who fought in all of our wars , is immeasurable. unortuntly with the military they only like to document the sucess and not the defeats/ failures. but its also the reason why we continue to make the same mistakes over and over in combat. i served in iraq and would here about failed missions and ambushes. we would have debriefings rarley on what not to do. and yet the next day told to the very thing that got a fellow soldier killed. then only to get hit and either have injuries and at times deaths. nevr made any sense to me and most others. but its the order. politcal corectness and selfeshness is entrenched in the military these days. most will do anything to make sure thye get the promotion or medal, even if they dont deserve it. this all got real bad with the troop surge in 08, to the point the military started purging ranks in 2010. but alot of good soldiers where let go, for soldiers who played the politics. bottom line is we will never learn and they rarley will document failures.

This was incredible to watch, thank-you all for increasing my understanding of this time 1000%. The entire thing got me, but I have to say at the end, when there was an image of young man struck down, and laying on the ground that I suddenly saw my own sons in his place, and realized in a personal way at that moment how horrible it was. My dad was in Vietnam, not sure what year it was. They pulled him out, he was a sharp shooter, they put him at Guantanamo Bay Cuba (USMC). He never talked about Vietnam or Guantanamo Bay Cuba. He said, " The shit he seen would make a person cringe." He would not talk about it. He did tell me he hated leaving his brothers behind in the jungle to go to Guantanamo. He told me he would rather be in Nam then Cuba. He said, "The Jungle was friendlier." I don't know what he seen or what y'all seen but my hat goes off to y'all for your service.

JEFF, I could not agree with you more. With all the resources we had in Vietnam if we would have been let go to win the war it would have been over in a year but instead the politicians decided to micromanage it. Their meddling in an area they knew nothing about directly caused many deaths of US servicemen and women. I served during the Vietnam and post Vietnam War. Never ever go to war but if we have to - go all out to win and let the soldiers do what they have prepared to - it's not for people who do not understand to be part of - but use it only as a last resort. My uncle Wayne served in Vietnam… I wish I knew more about his service. He passed away a few years ago from his exposure to Agent Orange. Damn good man.

My Dad Robert W Jones was in The U.S.A.F he did two tours in Vietnam and one in Korea. He made it home. And served 20 more years. I Remember the day are Soldiers Came Home, And the American People were not very nice.It made me cry then and seeing your Documentary 8th of Nov made me cry again.I will never let another Nov 8th go by without Remembering All are American Soldiers Dead and Alive.Who gave us our Freedom. I've loved the song and today March 29th 2017 I celebrate the Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home day. I always listen to the 8th of November and Still in Saigon by Charlie Daniels. Well I saw the link to this video and clicked on it and found myself moved deeply by all the care, respect, and love put into this story! I was a Navy Boiler Operator aboard the USS John Paul Jones DDG-32 and I was involved in the evacuation of Saigon. Thank you to all involved in telling this great story!!

Thank you for your service Niles I wish more of our Vietnam vets would get the chance to go back and possibly heal a little especially for my daddy he was a door Gunnar in the Air Force and was shot down 4 times and he is full of shrapnel but continued to go back till all American troops were brought home due to survivors guilt which he still suffers today. Thank you for your service you all deserved a ticker tape parade when you returned home but our country had a lapse in judgement in sorry.
