Don't remember if we did the trail. I just remember climbing and climbing with my boys 30 years ago. We loved seeing the monuments and taking cool pictures on the rocks. Love both round tops the most

Tim was not aware of the Loop Trail on Big Round Top. And never knew of the storm that damaged the park. I alway learn something new on every Monday about Gettysburg Battlefield from you. Thanks for sharing. 💯💕👊👍

Great video, Tim! You gave another reason to go back. I want to go up to big round top. It's sad that the sphinx rock is no longer there, would of liked to have seen it. Thank you for this episode. Peace.

I agree Tim. I feel that Big Round Top and Culps Hill are so wooded in that many visitors don’t give them much attention.

I enjoyed that trail many times. I remember there was a nest of vultures at the southern end. BRT was a prime lookout spot for them too.

'Sphinx' at Thebes was a monster that strangled passersby who were unable to guess its riddle. The name is related to 'sphincter', which is a ring of muscle that surrounds an opening to the body and that can tighten to close this opening.

"For whatever reason the locals referred to the rock by a racially inappropriate name." I think we know the reason: As I have heard Gary Gallagher say in many lectures: (paraphrasing) It is not too shocking to find that there were many racist people in the 1800's. I stumbled upon this myself cleaning out a classroom in New Mexico I found a relief map of the area and a mountain named "N-Word Mountain" was sitting right across the state line in Colorado. A quick internet search revealed MANY places with similar names in America. In the early 1960's Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall started removing these names from federal maps. If someone thinks you are being "Politically Correct" - well, there might not be an adequate answer for them. Sometimes a thing is just wrong if you have eyes to see it. Thanks for the 1990s footage at the end.

Check out the link in the comments to see a copy of the Loop Trail brochure online. I was just out there on Sunday, and some of the numbered markers are still standing. I visited #13 and #14, not far from the South Confederate Avenue, and they were still standing.

I'm pretty sure I never walked this trail over the years and I think this might be the first I have heard of it. I would like to try to find it and see if it is still passable or is blocked by downed trees. Great stuff, Tim, on a part of the battlefield that is familiar to visitors from afar but seldom explored up close.

In the description of the video, there is a link to one of the Big Round Top Loop Trail maps. So feel free to download it and take it out and look for the sites.

The sound was low and you can't really hear him anyway. That's why I did it. I am sure that Garry always has something profound to say.
