But you'll notice most of the British dinosaur managers gather around the lower end of the PL and the Championship. So it seems obvious which style is winning. Playing out from the back is just a tactic which any good coach includes, and the top ones tend to commit to it. How anyone can think that the GK booting the ball long is more "exciting" than playing football (and risking giving the ball away in your own third) is bizarre. Notably, the British managers usually can't coach their teams do play out from the back. “Tippy Tappy” football also requires a lot of Tactical Fouling where, when the team does actually lose possession they immediately foul the opposition player with the ball so as to stop all counter attacks and get time to reset into a defensive set up. Also they only concede a free kick far away from their own goal. They will ‘rotate’ on a prearranged basis who commits the foul so as not to have a player sent off from acquiring 2 yellow cards. The fact Allardyce brandishes a whole swathe of possession based tactics as "tippy tappy" says it all. The structures of English football, from grassroots kids football up, has been devoted to creating players who are more technical and better with the ball than ever before. We're seeing the fruits of this now with the young attacking talents England have at their disposal. For Allardyce to dismiss a whole footballing technical and tactical paradigm as "tippy tappy" and "boring" is an insult! I support Spurs and we're playing a possession dominant style of football again now, finally. Would SA call this "tippy tappy"? Because it's some of the most exhilarating football I've ever watched. It's high risk, it's technical, it's slow at times but then it's incredibly fast and incisive. I love it and hope to see more technical players and more managers promoting exciting, open, risk taking football! I'd agree with you there, England's style of play in the 70s, 80s and 90s killed off some potentially good careers by the style of play, Barnes and Hoddle to name just a few.

@@davidtuer5825 I had something to say about Sam because this interview is about Sam. In my view, he over-hyped his achievements with Bolton in the interview. In general, his managerial career divides opinion. Some folks think he has over-achieved, others like me think he's an above average manager who has had an above average career to date when compared to the elite managers.

I still remember the England vs Iceland game, the “kick and rush” mentality have held the nation back for more than 50 years. Luckily football academies are evolving out of it with players like Palmer and Foden. Ain’t no way we wants to see old school managers like Sam or Hodgson take over the national team again, they would ruin England squad worse than Southgate

I miss the days of a good cross and header. A good flick on and run through on goal. Plenty of ways to skin a cat. I just want to see good goals. I don’t need the 50 passes before. Sam wasn’t just a long ball coach. The players he had knew how to pass. He just told the ones that couldn’t, to get it forward so they didn’t lose it in the danger zone. Could do with seeing a bit more of that. Still waiting for onana to set up all these attacking plays and goals with his feet he was brought in to do for Utd. Give me a break 😂
@shamrockballs1066 Жыл бұрын
Its telling Sam couldnt answer Simons question about 'his' ideal style of play. That is because he never had one. Sams style of play was to fraustrate and time waste rather than implement a playing style of football to outplay teams and win. Just another English manager in a long list of English managers who set up to spoil for 90 munutes.

Sam's just bitter that he never got a shot at one of the top clubs. For better or worse, top clubs tend to go for managers that (mostly) play attractive, proactive football. Sam's a pragmatic, reactive manager and while there's nothing wrong with that, it is likely that approach affected his career trajectory. That said, let's say Sam got the Liverpool job instead of Brendan Rodgers in 2012. Would he have suppressed the urge to play pragmatic, safety-first football and let loose an attack that almost carried them to a title? Maybe, but I doubt it.

I like Sam and he doesn’t get the credit he deserves but todays football, tippy tippy as he calls it is better. English players are getting better and more technical, cole palmer and Foden for example. England is doing well in tournaments and English club teams are putting up a better showing in Europe. The football is better to watch, long may it continue and hopefully we never go back to the long ball days.

Yeah bit the "lesser" teams should play long ball. Burnley being a great example of that this season. They've played tippy tappy & it's cost them.
