Lovely what a bit of fresh paint will do. Hint, to prolong the life of a recoil starter (like an outboard) always pull gently till the pawls lock up then heave smartly no more than 3/4 of the length of the rope. If you do this they almost never break. On the other hand, I can't count the number of repairs I've done for people who just heave with all their might till ti slams up on the stops.

Nice video and storytelling. As you have this electronic autohelm, you really need a form of redundancy there or else you'll have a hard time on your long passages in case that fails - and fail it will. Your best friend, as a sailor, is a Hydrovane. If you're not aware of these, they're an auxiliary rudder that relies on wind. A small sail on the tiller is adjusted relative to wind and this keeps your boat in the same direction relative to wind. This means that wind can blow you off course for some time if the wind changes direction, but also means that the setting of your sails relative to wind does not become a big problem in that wind direction change - while a naive electronic autohelm would keep the boat on course irrespective of wind. Also, being dependent on wind only, it does not have actuators (helm motors) drain batteries. On a sailboat, my rule would be to use autohelm when sailing engine powered and Hydrovane when sailing wind powered. As to your flux gate mounted away from metal objects, it seemed to be near electric cables. You'd be surprised to discover how much of an electromagnetic field is around such cables when they conduce electricity or electronic signals, plus they're also metal. I'm not sure you need one on board, but if you have one of those "cable-in-wall finder" tools, switch it on at distance from a cable carrying signal and move the tool towards it, to see at what distance the device detects your cable. You may be surprised and then need to realise that the fluxgate is more sensitive than the tool. As to the big ship almost colliding - do you have a radar reflector in your mast, and maybe AIS? A woman with an engineering mind and collaboration spirit, goodness gracious, that's more attractive than all the shallow beauty in the world.

Make sure that the automatic mode of the bilge pump still works properly after you have wired up the manual switch. I did that once on a previous boat of mine and it turned out that I wired something improperly such that the manual actuation worked but the automatic actuation was somehow disabled and I ended up with my rug floating several inches above my cabin sole. Oh, and watch out for rogue orca whales off the coast of Portugal! There's an advisory on Noonsite about it. Two boats had their rudders bitten off!

Great film. If you're bored, watch a great documentary on Timeline (KZbin channel) with a title of something like "Who was Christopher Columbus?". Seems like he was actually Portuguese, born "the wrong side of the blanket" to a branch of the Royal family and was basically a spy for Portugal, despite serving (famously) the Spanish Royal family. It's very interesting - they claim he was born in a little Portuguese town called Cuba - and that's what he named the large island he discovered in the Caribbean. The main attraction of Porto for me is the Port wine. Have you had any yet? Long collaboration between England & Portugal on this business. Re: generator; Can't you just run the engine for a few hours? Depending on your alternator you may have to increase revs from tick-over to get some decent charging. Cheers!
