Pro Wrestlers Big Show & Billy Gunn discuss the evolution of wrestling and break down why the heel always essential for engaging storylines.
There isn't anything quit like professional wrestling in the entertainment world. Part dramatic storytelling soap opera, part athletic sport. Partially real and partially fake. Pro Wrestling, and the most famous iteration WWE, has been a massive industry entertaining millions of fans for decades. Being an actor and an athlete, Mike O'Hearn finds wrestlers a very special kind of fascinating. The combination of athleticism and showmanship is something O'Hearn deeply admires. Which is why he brought Big Show and Billy Gunn onto the podcast to talk shop about wrestling and its evolution. In Generation Iron and Barbend's latest episode of The Mike O'Hearn Show, Big Show and Billy Gunn break down the art, structure, and psychology behind storytelling and the heel in pro wrestling.
Bodybuilding, fitness, weight training - all on the Generation Iron Fitness Network!

That's what some people don't understand when they focus on the quality of the wrestling in Attitude and deem the era overrated. Its popularity wasn't about having a bunch of technically proficient 5 star matches. It was about the variety and uniqueness of all the characters and the fan investment. It was about pushing creative boundaries on stories and match types even if some of it was more sloppy as a result. All of those things were more important than how clean or impressive the matches were in terms of wrestling maneuvers and acrobatics. The other thing about Attitude was the unique situation and circumstances that led to it to begin with. Namely the Monday Night Wars and 1990s counter culture. WWE has tried to replicate the motivation of the former with the Raw and Smackdown brand split but it's just not the same and never will be.

This has been my favorite pod cast interview, wrestling related. That I've ever seen. This is what people and all wrestling fans should see. Even most or some wrestlers should watch just to get some real nollege about the wrestling business. The attitude era will always be the best era cause of the tellent that was on both WWF/WWE, ECW, and WCW RIP. All companies had a packed roster that was talented and hungry. They all felt they had to steal the show, and every match was like that, or at least tried to be like that. I could continue but i think ive said to much already.

One of the best examples of a "Spot Monkey" is Riccochet. Nobody cares what storyline he's in, nobody cares what the angle is of the match, everyone is just hyped and waiting for him to do something nuts. Foley had the same hype and excitement for whatever crazy shit he would do BUT everyone was equally excited for the story he was telling, the angle he was working.
@robintst
@robintst 7 ай бұрын
I once heard it said "nobody claps at a tennis game until someone misses the ball." The spot monkeys never stop moving, its a long chain of acrobatic spots that look spectacular in the moment but they don't ever let anything breathe long enough for the crowd to process what they're seeing and they never sell anything. So instead of it looking like a fight it looks like a Cirque du Soleil tumbling act and it bleeds into a malaise of white noise. At the end of the night none of the people in that crowd remember the next day what they saw.

So in fewer, FEWER words: Big Show and Billy Gunn have been successfully been able to seperate their work from their home lives. Flair's generation grew up on radio and books and theater, Paul and Billy's generation grew up on TV and movies. All of it story based. You needed to know the story to fully enjoy it. The Young Bucks' generation grew up on Street Fighter and Tekken, where there is a story but you don't need it. The games are more about doing the special moves and combos than about character development.

Even his build which is impressive on t.v, wasn't much bigger than me and while I workout regularly, I am by no means big. All pro sports exaggerate their atheletes height and weight, but pro wrestling is probably the worst of all. Show and Kane are listed at 7'0", Taker at 6'10", Hogan at 6'7" and while they are all big guys, you can knock at least several inches off all them in real life.

Personally I would say the majority of us wrestling fans (ones that respect the actual business, work ethic and psychology) want to hear about what goes on in the mind rather than the body of an athlete. The mindset of anyone is key to their survival in any field and the wrestling world is a cut throat business like any other in the Entertainment industry. I have met Show once or twice great guy and those that don't get it come off foolish to us for the standard questions they get asked. "What made you like it?" who cares I want to know who was an influence, how are the relationships between shows, who is going over? Why did this happen to so and so, etc. The politics are a huge part of the ladder.
@markusallen5634
@markusallen5634 5 ай бұрын
The problem with most wrestling fans is that they tend to take things a little too seriously, as of what they're seeing is 'real' and the person in the ring is really like what they're seeing, not realizing that it's a 'gimmick' and it all part of the character, and if the 'character' is a 'heel' then the wrestler aka "sports entertainer" is going to do what a typical 'heel' character is going to do, especially if that heel is in a heel faction. It's one thing to 'boo' a wrestler, it's another thing to go to the point of sending 'death threats' to someone who is playing a character on TV. That's happened to several wrestlers, including Baron Corbin. It's idiotic to think that there is an actual person who can 'appear' and 'disappear' in the middle of the ring and who could actually survive being buried alive three times. I'm a Undertaker fan, but I don't believe Taker is real.

Im about half way through and listening to these guys talk about how the industry evolves, the wrestlers change, the fans change etc. One difference ive noticed between the old gaurd and the new gaurd is the new gaurd is thin skinned and cry because the fans respond negatively to their performance, they need to thicken their skin and accpt the reaction while disregarding the garbage and figure out what they need to change if they want to win that crowd and not act like they are entitled to praise alone. This new generation of wrestlers could benefit from the examples before them.
