earth ships are meant to be self sustaining greenhouses that humans can live off without depending on outside resources. you can use the sink and don't need to worry about the water bill go up because the water is going into the plants. they put solar panels on the roof to use electricity for your tv or microwave with the bill going up. it's actually quite genius.

Thanks for your reply. I hope to see some videos of the guest house build, and look forward to seeing your new improvements. Have a look at the Wisy Vortex filters as an alternative to the salad bowl. I imagine they would be a perfect fit for an Earthship, as they ride low between the gutter and cistern. They remove organic matter from the equation quickly, rather than letting it break down and enter the cisterns. I am truly envious of you, and hope to someday live in an Earthship too.

Hi Jeff greetings from Panama in central america! I'm looking forward to build a off grid home in mountain side in a place that they call La India Boquete search it on Google! I've want to know did you build the road to your off grid home? Since my land is almost inaccesible yet with cars this is vital for building a off grid home no? In that land we can seed geisha coffee that the pound can go around 400 dollars, another questions the water filtration system.. do you have a document where I can have a reference of how it works? since the only water source that we have there is a small river of pure mountain water but is down hill.. and how much power does your system generates so you can hold all your home? Since we need fridge and TVs and lights, I would be glad that you could help me with some doubts!

Thanks for the tour! I'm very interested in the earthship technologies and sustainable living, but not sure how affordable this is. Without the cost of land, do you know roughly how much these cost to build?
@bigskyearthship7 жыл бұрын
hey alex. long answer to a simple question. in general an earthship costs roughly the same amount per square foot to an equally sized framed home in your area. certainly finishes can add or subtract from that. if you hire earthship biotecture (we did) things move very quickly. if you want to general contract it yourself you can assemble your own team and save some money, however i would suggest going through the earthship academy in taos, new mexico first.. once complete with your $100 per year utility bill, you will find that you would never consider another unconventional stick framed home again. its just to easy of a living. YEAH ESHIP!

@bigskyearthship5 жыл бұрын
there can be up to four uses of water in an Earthship. you can find all that beta online at Earthship.com. that being said, in the desert you may consider having a well as back up. it is simple math to figure how much you can collect based on averages however, people like their water usage unlimited. in Montana I can say that there is zero chance of running out.

There are many considerations when you are planning one out, but if you do make certain changes you can build these houses just about anywhere. Keep in mind humidity, rainfall, sunshine, local permits. So much prep work, but worth it. One of the biggest considerations is making sure your land has a good South facing landscape. Nothing to block the sun from the front of the house.

@carter96435 жыл бұрын
Some people introduce predatory wasps in order to eat unwanted bugs but still pollinate their crops although I doubt I’d ever do that. The best solution I would think especially in a colorado climate would be to keep 2 bee boxes outside and allow your windows open in the summer. But certain vegetation doesn’t need pollination but still. Plus honey is delicious and profitable. Bees are actually not too hard to keep, as long as your queen doesn’t try to leave then you’re screwed because you have to go and find her or your whole hive is gone. Luckily the whole hive will be following her though so you will know if it happens.

@bigskyearthship7 жыл бұрын
hey dave. we are building a new earthship vacation rental here on our property that will have some site specific changes without bastardizing the design that works. you will have to come out to see them. i have not witnessed any mold growth in the cooling tubes.. they work great. water filtration is pretty simple and straight forward. the salad bowls do a reasonable initial filtration of removing debris before entering the cistern. improvement/evolution can be made however. either way it gets the job done.

I am not getting the plant concept. So your grey water, which i understand in sink and shower mostly, runs underneath those plants and you eat the plants. What about the soap that the water contains? If you wash a vegetable that has a fungus disease, would that not infect the other plants with the fungus via the water? Is it safe to eat plants that have fed on grey water? I understand some microbiological diseases can be carried in water. The concept sounds good but i would like to understand the grey water to food loop a bit better.
@bigskyearthship7 жыл бұрын
hey. there is thousands of hours and research on grey water online. i will let you explore your own answer to this question. my answer simply is that the earth is the greatest BRITA filter of all! without its filtration we would all be dead.
@mattites35456 жыл бұрын
An easier way that is incomplete to answer is there is a holding tank first like a grease trap or sewer. The oils float and chunks sink while the middle water travels through into a none vegetable garden section first. Also with these systems most people choose wisely what products come into there home.
@DarthPoyner3 жыл бұрын
@@mattites3545 That and the main kitchen sink usually goes to the black water/septic system along with the toilet water. The bathroom sinks, washer, shower and others go to grey water. You are supposed to use natural or Bio detergents for clothes and body. So it has less impact on the grey cell. Things that are probably better in the long run anyway.
