Awww Bear is a cutie, too, don’t want to leave him out. Nothing better than home grown potatoes. I hope I get a good crop this year as the last 2 years have been little to none. I asked the Lord to bless them this year instead of just expecting or hoping for it and so far they seem to be quite vigorous.

Sorry to hear that the girls are not feeling well. I don't fret much about getting stuff planted late anymore cause our season seems to last a bit longer than it did when I was younger. That old turtle sure would have made a good pot of soup for dinner. The old folks use to say if they latched on to you that they wouldn't turn loose till it thundered. Never cared to find that out. Thanks Justro!

Justro, most turtles you can pick up by the middle of their shells. But a snapper has to be picked up by the end of their tail. We never harvest any that are smaller than a dinner plate because it is too much work for not enough meat. That one on the road today was big enough and you let him go. Dont you eat snapper? We LOVE it, especially the white meat neck. Its hard to beat fried snapper. Years gone by there were plenty of leather back turtles. They are way better than snappers. Just dont see them or jack rabbits hardly anymore. Missed the girls today. Bless you and your little mountain family Justro.

LOL - I caught a leatherback on my fishing line a couple years ago; we knew something was stealing our bait, but he got just a little too greedy . . . and there I was, trying to figure out what the heck I had on the line until I got it to shore! He wasn't very big, maybe 8 inches . . .
@metcalfmills5679
@metcalfmills5679 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I always pick them up by the tail but last time I had somebody crybabing that I was going to hurt it so that’s one reason I didn’t, the other reason is if you look close he peed a big puddle when I first started looking at him and got his tail soaked. I didn’t want turtle pee hands at that moment. Animals usually do that before they fight. I know folks that do but I’m gonna stick to beef… Thanks USS! Bless you too

That horse looks like an expert with that plow! I’m sorry the girls weren’t up to helping, but I’m glad to see Penny and Bear were still supervising all your adventures! You seriously made me smile when you saved that turtle! The Justro eclipse was a lot of fun to watch happen too! I like to experiment with when I plant different things like you’re doing. I have been surprised before by things doing much better than I thought they would when I planted later. It really does all come down to when the first frost hits, but that’s always a guessing game at best anyway. Thank you for letting us hang out with y’all. I like seeing what you have growing. Your little taters popping through made me super happy for you! I’m sure by the next day they were twice as high after that rain too! Your plans for what to plant where and why sound well thought out. I look forward to seeing that field fill out with life as you get it all planted!

You don't need no string if you got a push plow. Just drive you stake at the far end of your row and then just keep your eye on that stake and walk right to it if you don't look down at the plow you'll have a row straight as can be. After I learned that trick it's saved me all kinds of time.

When I was growing up we planted our beans with the silver queen corn and used it to run them on. I’m still planting my garden that big rain right before Memorial Day put me in a bind because of the damage done I been working. And if you have never tried a brown greasy bean you don’t know what your missing. Also I highly recommend making one of the seed planters that Danny from Deep South made I did and wonder how I ever got by without it.

Nice looking wheat. You could get some nice clean straw out of it, too, if you wanted to. That’s what I hope to do with my barley if it turns out. We had a really large turtle wash up to our property years ago after a large storm. Probably from an irrigation ditch. It just fit our largish medium sized dog crate and we took it to a local lake area. Was a super nice crate with wheels and a handle to pull it. We had to take the top off to get the turtle in.

Another great video ! We use the Hoss double wheel hoe we love it . We plant rattlesnake beans we got a few years ago in Hendersonville from a man who had been growing them years. I wish I still had some of the greasy beans my Granny use to plant they came from some of our family In Madison co. I came across some dent corn seed called red stripe I’m going to give a try next year . Have you ever heard of it?

I was afraid I wouldn't get potatoes this year - I was delayed getting them in the ground, and most were pretty soft when I did . . . but at least half have come up, and I went ahead and added some more the other day, hoping the season runs long enough to get a harvest!

My tater crop is about ready to harvest end of this month. lol It's all of 3 rows x 15ft long. I'll be replanting for a late Fall crop.

@@metcalfmills5679 Thanks! The one row is Yukon Gold, my favorite. Danny from Deep South says they don't produce well for him, but I hope they do well for me. The other 2 rows are a Purple variety with a few YG interspersed where the chickens dug em up and ate the first planting. Dang chickens! We'll see how the YG does. If they do decently, that is what I will replant in July. I sent you an email.. just in case it goes to your junk mail.

Nice job on the video! I can only imagine how much harder it is without your camera girl. Hope she's feeling much better. Do you do a lot of reading and research about what you do, or does this knowledge come mostly from life experience? Amazing to come across a snapping turtle! He did not want your help, but he should be thankful.

She is feeling a lot better. Charlotte got sick on Wednesday, so it has been a week of it. Mostly life experience, seems like things work different in different places so it’s better to learn where you’re at. Yeah he wanted to wrestle instead of move along. Thanks Sunny 🙂

That’s really cool, but with the soil I have, I’d need a water Buffalo to pull it through. I like the way you think about being late in planting, seeing it as a learning opportunity. God’s plan, God’s will, God’s timetable. I found a source for Cushaw seeds, but they were sold out. I’ll try again this winter if I can remember. I’ve never eaten Greasy beans, never heard of them. Thanks for the planting tips too! You sure have a lot of nice old farming tools. It will be fun seeing everything growing. My Hickory King is about 2’ tall now. I planted zucchini and half runner beans with it. I’m looking for somewhere to plant mustard greens. Neighbor has a rototiller, so maybe I make a couple rows. Digging them with a fork would take me a couple weeks. Fingers crossed. Did I miss the eclipse, or was that what you were showing over your shoulder while planting?

I’m getting impatient for my taters to bloom. I would like to grow some mustard greens in the fall. But I couldn’t find seeds. Someone suggested planting mustard seeds that are bottled for spice use and sold at the grocery store. Wonder if that would work 🤔
