This Space Weather News forecast sponsored in part by Millersville University:
www.millersville.edu/swen
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! Im on the road this week, but our Sun is hard at work! Activity is picking up, big time. We have no less than 11 active regions in Earth-view right now with more rotating into view over the next few days. Several of these are X-flare players, which means lots of radio noise and potential for radio blackouts on Earth's dayside. Amateur radio operators, expect radio propagation to suffer over the next week or more before things quiet down. In addition, we have a partially Earth-directed solar storm on its way. This storm could graze Earth starting the afternoon of the 25th so aurora photographers be sure to stay on your toes. GPS users should also stay vigilant because both the radio noise and the solar storm can cause reception issues at dawn and dusk and anywhere near aurora. Learn the details of the coming solar storm and fast solar wind, watch the fast growth and flare potential of all these new emerging regions, and see what else our Sun has in store this week.

I was reluctantly hoping to hear from you Dr. Skov. When you put up a video on Thanksgiving it must be because of solar activity that needs to be brought to our attention. For what is is worth…i’m one of those people super sensitive to this solar activity,the last few days my ears are ringing, head pounding, body aches and generally out of it, couldn’t even join family for the festivities, just me sitting by the wood stove in my log cabin under the giant Redwoods….great star gazing here in these rural coastal mountains overlooking the Pacific ocean, even with the bright companion coming up in the east. Happy Thanksgiving all!⛰🌲👨‍🌾🇺🇸✝️

Geometric, almost. But I will let you do the math. Topology is beyond my grasp, even the basics, if that is where I end up being. I’d probably have to sit alone on mars to even start any attempt. To much noise on earth these day. Maybe I’ll simply enjoy space weather and my simple mind and give free rein to my ADHD here, at home, with you guys. Fun comment and it does somewhat, with a little bit of arrangement. At some point in time it looks as if it could.🌷☀️

Happy to have found this channel! I've been trying to follow solar activity as of late for my own interests, but I find the NOAA site a bit over my head and most news articles unnecessarily sensationalist. Nice to have somewhere that gives the data and how to interpret it without bringing up the Carrington event every 10 seconds. I believe you've gained a regular watcher.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts here. Agreed, it's hard to find a middle ground in space weather. Either topics are covered using too much science jargon, making things impossible to understand or subjects are dumbed down so much that nothing is left but fearmongering. By contrast, I strive to make these forecasts both understandable and realistic. After all, space weather is just another form of weather, and we have to deal with it on a daily basis. You will find this community positive and encouraging. We are all here to learn, so welcome!

So I had to travel on the 28th! Right before my flight Hawaii time 3:35 pm - there was the m9.8 flare - ahahah just my luck As I was boarding they gave me a complimentary flight ticket cuz they had no in flight entertainment! …from the flare ! Oh goodie. I wish I chose to stay on Maui instead of fly that day. I’ve been sick to my stomach with nausea and pain/ and severe anxiety. My liver is now causing pain. But gonna get milk thistle and dandelion tea - keep taking Epsom salt baths with baking soda and taking iodine. I’m with my mama in the Hospital now. The things we do for our beloved mamas. I have celiac disease so my gut is compromised from it- makes me so susceptible to radiation exposure. Wish they would advise passengers before hand !!! I didn’t get the report of the flare til after I landed! Wish I put two and two together when they said no I. Flight entertainment . I was unwell the flight and wanted to go to the cockpit and make them take me back home before I’m stranded on mainland away from my children

I thought Ultra violet light takes 8 minutes to reach earth? how come CMEs takes days to reach earth?
@rickb06
@rickb06 7 ай бұрын
Ultraviolet light, like all forms of electromagnetic radiation (including visible light), travels at the speed of light, which indeed takes about 8 minutes to reach Earth from the Sun. However, Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are massive bursts of solar wind and magnetic fields rising above the solar corona or being released into space, consisting of plasma and particles. These particles travel much slower than the speed of light, which is why CMEs take several days to reach Earth.

@TamithaSkov
@TamithaSkov 7 ай бұрын
Yes! Indeed @rickb06 is absolutely correct. This is why solar flares, which emit light and CMEs, which contain particles and magnetic fields impact Earth totally differently and create totally different effects!

With our magnetosphere weakened over the years, smaller CMEs have had stronger effects. Meaning if we get hit by a moderate one(god forbid it’s a large one), then it’s going to REALLY have larger effects.
@TamithaSkov
@TamithaSkov 7 ай бұрын
Remember though, a lot of aurora being reported now is coming from a higher awareness due to social media and far more sensitive cameras than during previous solar cycles. Not everything being reported today can be attributed to a weakening Earth's field, so rest easy. Not to mention a weakening Earth's field means geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) are less intense, which means power grids are getting a break with the weakening field.
