Back in the 90's, Target had a policy of calling in backup cashiers whenever the lines grew past two people, the one being scanned and one waiting. If you were a sales floor employee during the Christmas season, it was entirely possible that you'd spend your entire shift working a lane, just to help manage the crowds. I never saw ALL of them active at one time, but running 18 of 20 lanes was pretty close. They seem to have quietly dropped that customer service mindset somewhere along the way - but that's okay, because they also mostly stopped carrying anything I actually want to buy, so it's no huge loss. Seriously, I am amazed at their ability to so consistently carry _almost,_ but not quite, what I'm looking for.

The irony of checkouts is customers see them as the place the business makes money. The business on the other hand sees it as the place they take the money, not actually make it. Their play is to make the checkout as inexpensive as possible, while maximizing additive spending. So long as they don't make the customer angry enough to stop shopping with them, the longer you sit in line looking at crap in the que, the better. On top of that, the less they spend on labour at the checkout, again so long as it doesn't make the customer shop elsewhere, all the better.

As someone who has worked in grocery primarily Customer Service for nearly ten years. All positions Bagger, Checker, Self Check Out, Money Services, and Customer Service Manager. I work for Kroger, and while I detest a lot of what they do and what Walmart does, this is sadly a response to the terrible decay of our society. Due to high amounts of theft at store Self Check Outs, they probably want to make sure the only ones using it are the ones who intend to pay for everything. Not people who bag items without scanning them, not people who ring up entire carts and pretend like they're going to pay but just walk out the second the attendant goes and helps somebody else, or the people who scan a $2 candy bar and put a $30 pack of steak in their bags instead (it happens). Does that suck for the rest of us who live honestly and pay for our items like we do and we should? Yes, yes, it does. Sadly, in a lot of states, petty theft is more or less legal now, which causes a lot of these big corporations to turn a blind eye to it. I imagine the subscription fee is Walmart also trying to make up for those costs. It sucks but until society changes and we start holding criminals accountable, we all sadly will have to start paying the price.

Went to garden center....only 1 register open with, again, 10 to 12 carts deep. So last effort...went to register at the garden exit....there stood an employee to tell me bye, but couldn't open the register, said that wasn't in his pay grade. That did it for me! I left my cart sit there and I left...never went back! I haven't stepped into a Walmart since!! And I never will! This happened well over 11 years ago! The most richest store on the planet and they can't/won't supply enough pay to an employee to run a register?!?!? Sam Walton is rolling over in his grave!!!!

Did similar to Home Depot years ago. Needed one light bulb and stopped right after work, so like 530ish PM. Self checkout was just getting started. Not a single cashier. Dropped the package on the register as I stormed out and it beeped. The person standing there said that it rang up and I had to correct that. Told them, "Not my problem." Ended up going down the road to the local Do It Best. Friendly employees who knew where stuff was and checked me out. The kicker.. cheaper than HD. At this point, HD is a last ditch desperation Hail Mary play.

I was in a Walmart for the first time in awhile, and the only workers on the floor were warehouse stockers (safety vests and pallet jacks) and pick-up order pickers (chatting with others on their headsets) and neither had anything to do with customers, and trying to ask anything was hopeless. Meanwhile, online said the one item I wanted was there, but not where. I wasted so much time trying to not do a pickup order for one item that turned out to be on a sidekick attached to a completely unrelated aisle.

I wasn't going to miss the bus and walk 30min to the transfer station, nor wait 30+ min for the next bus after waiting for 25min. It's so frustrating because there was no one using the self checkout, but there was an employee standing there and there was only 5 out of the 25 registers open. Now I will usually avoid this store (and other Walmarts).

I love how everybody is now complaining about self-checkout. Before, people complained the lines were too long and the cashiers too slow. I am old enough to remember that. Self-checkout is just the ultimate combo: corporate desire to eliminate employees while giving consumers a tongue-in-cheek solution. It's honestly a brilliant solution to an old problem. As a note, my current problems with self-checkout are totally related to my disability. Like, how hard would it be to put every barcode in exactly the same place on every package? And if you can't do that, how hard would it be to emboss the packaging with a barcode symbol so I can find it by touch? And isn't the whole self-checkout thing basically a computer? I happen to know it is, because a fellow blind person, this one a doctorate in computer science, was part of the team who programmed the Toshiba iteration. So why can't it talk to me? I mean, some stores are halfway there. I think Costco and some others actually say the price of each item, but Lord forbid I know my total or that the card reader is accessible. I happen to dislike shopping online, mostly because the people who folks hire to write product descriptions (if they hire anyone at all) speak English as, like, their seventh language or something. Plus, most of the descriptions are weird photos of words or charts or whatever, because just writing readable text takes a Masters' Degree or something. Whah whah, blah blah, I know, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to join the complaint department. Great video though, yeah?
