I was a Walmart bakery manager. Yes, the donuts are all frozen and all we do in bake them in the oven on racks that’s why the “grill” marks. We were a small Walmart so we glazed by hand instead of the glazing machine. Also, there is a button that we push so when we bake bread the smell goes through the air vents so everyone smells the bread. Pushes sales up.

I was active duty military in Washington DC on 9/11. A couple days into everything locked down I got permission to take another troop to Krispy Kreme and buy like 12 dozen donuts. We got there, and they were so happy to see some military people they took our order, and we paid for the 12 dozen, then they kept bringing us fresh ones to eat while we waited... i think I had a dozen while standing there. They then filled our car with boxes of donuts like 25+ dozen. We got back to base and just drove around handing out boxes. We were allowed to go down a few more times before the base was opened back up . Needless to say, you can have too many Krispy Kreme. It was years before i could even smell one. Great company and great glazed donut!.

I basically grew up on Daylight’s donut holes. My church(I’m not there anymore) is a rather large one here in Memphis, and they had a standing order of several hundred boxes every Sunday morning. Every department got boxes for each hour of Sunday School or Service. So the choir, orchestra, youth, college, etc etc. Not being a morning person, I usually had a handful at Sunday School, then from Jr High and up I got seconds when I went to play in the orchestra for services. 😂 Probably why I always started falling asleep during the sermon though!

The Dough Nuts we know of actually dates back to around the 17th century. I believe it was the Dutch. They was call "Dough Nuts" because they was a fried piece of dough roughly around the size of a walnut and was covered in sugar. So our modern donuts aren't even anywhere near what the original donut was. Donut holes is the closest thing to an original dough nuts we have. Another little fun fact is that the Colonial day Dough Nuts can date even further back to Ancient Rome. I was a donut finisher at Dunkin Donuts. I baked the prefrozen Fritters, bagels and cookies. And I filled and iced all the donuts (fried that night by the fryer-expert). I was allowed to eat as many donuts as I wanted, and the owners probably allowed this knowing that the finisher would only want to eat 2 or 3 a week. And if I overfilled a donut with cream to the point it broke open....I had to eat it...and you quickly learned to NOT overfill a donut.

Oh my goodness! When I worked at Shipley Donuts as a teenager, I was also a finisher. The donuts were made fresh at the store and I hand glazed and decorated them. I also used a tube thingy to inject the fillings into the donuts, and too much pressure made the fillings shoot out the other side of the donuts. We had to eat our mistakes, which was awesome on Day 1, but not as awesome a few days later. 😂 I still love Shipley Donuts so much!

I know this was on donuts, but you mentioned Kolaches. What you had at Shipley's is a Klobasnek or Pig-N-Blanket. Kolaches are sweet, and do not have meat. Unfortunately, most people can't say Klobasnek so they just go with the better Czech pastry Kolache. Shipleys the Kolache Factory, and yes even Buc-ees are using the incorrect Czech word. Think if we called enchiladas, tacos just because it was easier to say. #TexCzech

The "pig in a blanket" you had was a Klobásník, which is a savory form of a Czech Kolach(e), which is a yeasty pastry dough with a fruit jam (and sometimes cream cheese) baked into an indentation in the middle. The both use the same dough, which is likely why they all came to be called "Kolaches" in the small czech communities in central Texas.

We have independent bakeries, mainly, but they're not as visible as chains that have big signs, so you don't think of donuts as often... When i moved to Boston, i saw Dunkin on every corner and got so excited! People here eat donuts! I ate a lot of donuts before i realized no one ate the donuts... They just got the coffee. Oh. Dammit! I only get donuts now maybe 4 times a year... but they're good when i do!

In Houston, we saw the same thing Krispy Kreme came and went pretty quickly. Shipley's specialty is cake donuts as he noted how overly moist their donuts are, that's where they shine with maple icing of course. Otherwise, those small mom and pop donut places are best when it comes to non-cake donuts - like a place called 'Sweet Shop' in Greenfield, IN.

Also from Michigan, and around the Detroit area Tim Horton's is the only donut chain left that can still make legitimate crullers since the pandemic. Nobody else seems to be able to get their hands on a certain ingredient needed for that style. And by "legitimate" crullers I mean the kind that have the egg-based batter and the large air bubbles, kind of like eclair batter. I tried Krispy Kreme's "cruller" version once, and it was basically just a cake donut shaped like a tractor tire, so disappointing. And Tim Horton's has really good muffins also.

Daylight Donuts isn't exactly a chain, in the way most places are chains. The places which use that name are allowed to do so basically because they purchase the donut mix from Daylight Donuts. So each store is going to vary more than usual - they might have different mixes of donuts they offer, or different styles that the people who own that store made up. Store design and layout is also probably going to vary quite a bit.

On the other hand, I've had Daylight Donuts fresh every time that I've ever eaten them, since childhood. And Daylight Donuts sausage rolls are amazingly good. Never had Shipley's before. Never had Tim Horton's before. Dunkin Donuts are alright, but nothing I'd go out of my way for. And Walmart donuts don't rate as high for me personally, but they're also alright. Some of them still bake fresh in house. I know the one on 96th and king george in surrey still uses their baking area. always smells amazing in there. I think the difference is Corporate stores vs franchise ones.

We like our Tim’s here in Michigan too. A good doughnut and very good cup of coffee.

I was in boot camp in Orlando when I had my first Krispy Kreme donut. They actually had them in the mess hall at breakfast. I wasn’t a big breakfast eater back then, and I’d usually get some cereal and a lemon filled KK donut. That was back in 1981! I’m from the north, Pennsylvania, and we didn’t have KK up there at that time, so I’d never tasted one.

I worked at Walmart in the bakery a few years ago. Yes, they come in frozen. They put them on trays and put them in the frig the day before to thaw and proof. The next morning they put them in the oven. Once they cool they frost them. I’m pretty sure Dunkin is the same way.

Matt on a donut sugar rush is a sight to see! I’m in NJ & we have Duck Donuts. Maple bacon donuts are very addictive 😁🎉

The Krispy Kreme in my town closed after less than 3 years. They couldn't compete with a couple of local donut places that always has consistently better tasting donuts. Krispy Kreme would have good donuts for about an hour or two every few days. They just couldn't stay consistent. I probably threw away more than I ate.
