When my best friend and I moved to Oregon from LA area and lived in my car for a bit in 2018 the very first night after we left we slept in my car in that very parking lot you're eating breakfast in at 4:38. I'd recognize it anywhere. Brings back such great memories and is crazy to see it here lol. We got there at night and didn't see the view until 5am when the sun rose. The beauty of Big Sur changed my life.

"Hate to be the old guy who sez: My first trip to Big Sur was Jan. 1960 with a buddy and fellow architecture buff to see Nathanial Owen's (of Skidmore Owens and Merril fame) house, Wild Bird. Other highlight of that trip was being picked up by Henry Miller on Partington Ridge in the rain to get us back to the highway. Wow 60 years ago. Even Big Sur changes yet still behind the times...Thanks for the memories.

Remember the times of the hippies there? And the VW micro bus? And Esalen...
@henryhorton92404 жыл бұрын
@@wolfgangk2824 yeah I remember on that first trip stopping at Slates hot springs well before it became Esalen. Sitting in the old bathtubs. Hot water and fog and sea gulls and surf crashing below. As to hippies my buddy owned the 350 acre ranch above what later became the nude beach at San Gregorio 11 mi south of Half Moon Bay and I lived there for a while and used to see Further, Ken Kesey's bus come down Hiway 84 from La Honda and turn south on Hiway 1 heading to Santa Cruz of a weekend. Had two microbuses in my day which i gardened out of for a living. BTW If you are familiar or aren't with that intersection go on Google Earth and do street view where the rads connect. If you look north or east u will see trees towering over the roads. Walter planted trees where there was only chapparel and eroding hillsides for 50 years and i helped him there from 56 to 66 before heading north to be the head gardener at Heritage House on the Mendocino Coast. Gives me a boost here in my 80s in North Carolina to visit that forest I helped create.

Central California is the best of both worlds of northern and southern California in terms of natural beauty. It also has a lower population density so that it is easier to enjoy that natural beauty. Having drinks on the grass at Ventana Big Sur, overlooking the coast, you feel like a God on Mount Olympus. Something magical about that place.

You've been gone too long (or just didn't know). But landslides from rainy season took out entire long sections of Highway 1 and put them into the ocean. That is why the tunnel is there (completed only in 2019 I believe). An even worse one happened last year (and now you cannot even get to Southern Big Sur (impassible). They are working on it, but it is going to be a years long and massively expensive project. Great video though - as always.

Hey, you should do one on the Tri-valley area in SF Bay Area. We live here and my American friends from other states think that SF Bay Area has the image of downtown SF. You should do the East side of the Bay Area. Danville has the restaurant where they filmed Mrs. Doubtfire, Bridges. Dublin has a Irish butter museum and company, but the center of Dublin has a concentration of Chinese, Indians and other Asians. In between, Pleasanton and Livermore (across San Francsico Outlet Malls), there is a big modern mall with foods from different parts of Asia. They opened the mall about 1 year ago. I recommend the Japanese Tataki Ice cream. There is the Car Museum in Blackhawk Museum (they have more than cars. They have a nice African, American Wild West and Chinese exhibit with copies of the terracota warriors from the tombs of important folks in China). It is inside of an almost ghost mall (Blakchawk), but beautiful and well cared place with a little man made waterfall and calm ducks, goose and swans that you can feed. It is an interesting place to explore for a video. It is a contrast to the SF downtown.

The reason why some hillsides have trees and others are more barren isn’t because of the fog. They both get the same fog. It’s just that the barren hillsides face south where they get more sun exposure that dries out the soils.

I lived in California for 50 of my 62 years and never paid for parking. Some you need to pay for only if you use their parking lot. Highway1 in that area is always under repair and often closed for long periods of time. Between Santa Cruz and Pacifica are the best beaches.
