My favorite Kurt Russell character. The sidekick who doesn’t realize he’s a sidekick, continually finds himself hilariously out of his depth, and still somehow oozes a badass charm with every scene

Raiden, the electric God of thunder, is based on the lightening-wielding character in this movie. Sonya was loosely based on martial arts star Cynthia Rothrock. Shang Tsung, is based on Lo-Pan, the primary antagonist from Big Trouble in Little China. Bloodsport with Jean Claude Van Damme was also a big influence on Mortal Kombat. They originally wanted to make a game with Jean Claude, but things fell through, but they still based Johnny Cage on Van Damme.

The secret to "Big Trouble in Little China" is realizing Jack is the sidekick. It's like the camera followed Robin around all the time, with Batman saving the day off-camera. Also, this movie is just pure, don't-question-it fun. It reminds me a lot of "Ghostbusters" too, that same mix of supernatural shenanigans and dry humor. A classic that deserved better on its original release.

So glad to see you react to this one, it's a favorite of mine. I got a good laugh when you called Lightning a knock-off Raiden. While Raiden is an actual mythological figure, his traditional appearance doesn't lend itself well to a video game. Apparently he's a little red monkey-troll guy. So, the guy working on Mortal Kombat needed a different appearance. And that's when he saw this movie. Physically, Raiden from Mortal Kombat *is* the character from this movie. :) There was a deleted scene that gave some background for Gracie Law. She was born in China to American parents, which technically makes her a Chinese girl with green eyes. This is why Lo Pan can use her, and why he couldn't just grab some random non-Chinese green-eyed girl centuries ago. The movie was inspired by another movie titled Zu: Warriors From The Magic Mountain, which is based on the Wuxia novels by Huan Zhu Lou Zhu, written back in the 30s and 40s. As far as craziness goes, Big Trouble has nothing on Zu.

6:41 for some reason this is one of my favorite shots in movies. It is also one of the few times it looks like the stunt driver is booking it. What I love is Jack Burton is really not the lead but more of a sidekick. But he is still bad ass "We really shook the pillars of heaven, uh Wang" ""WAIT Aren't you going to kiss her?"" (looks right at one of the most beautiful women of the 80's) "Jack: No." This movie, like allot of John Carpenter's work, was a underground hit. For along time people wrote him off as a hack director. Far from it, his movies where always turned in on time and under budget. And he was able to make some of the coolest movies for little money. It's nice to see his movies are finally looked as some of the best movies to come out of the 80's This movie is so much fun.
