I currently daily a 2012 Chrysler 200 sedan with the 283hp 3.6 V-6 and 6 speed auto (same as used in the old minivans, Journey, and Promaster vans) and have had one of the turbocharged 4dr hatch Lebanon’s and a 2dr Shadow turbo, so I always get a laugh out of those types. With my 200, there were complaints in ads on KZbin about the car being over powered. I also was reading on an Allpar thread for the platform where somebody came on there that was looking to replace a mid-90’s Impala SS and was POSITIVE there was a suspension issue with the car because of how it behaved under power.......most of the Shelby-Dodge guys on there like myself just laughed at the guy’s post!

The F2T engine was a single cam 12V Factory stroked 2.2(from 2.0) with an IHI VJ11 Turbo. Only in the US was the interior of the second generation speed 3 the same as the SP25. In other markets there were a number of differences, from seat trim specification to instrument cluster color and type, to the removal of the bland silver trims for something a little more appealing. I believe there was also differences in equipment levels - In my country the MPS came with an auto dipping rear view mirror which I don't think the US got. Overall, the only items really shared between the standard Mazda 3 and the Speed 3/MPS is the chassis (with significant stiffening in the case of the Speed 3/MPS), the headlining, the dash crash pad and certain audio/HVAC items. Everything else is different with a different part number.

Having owned a 2nd gen from new for 8 years, Had it tweaked to about 300 WHP with all bolt ons, proper suspension and proper motor mounts (75/80 duro) , There was nothing sketchy about the car. The torque steer you build up a tolerance to knowing what it will do before it does it. I tracked it for a while as well. Had the TWM short shifter and the complete replacement unit in the console, and never had shifting issues. It blew peoples mind at the track, because they didn't really know what it was. The problem with the big turbo is that the more power they made, the less reliable they became. I know of 3 cars with big turbos and extensive internal work that all failed with relatively low mileage. I miss the car but I have moved on

I love my Speed 3. Personally prefer the MK1's due to them being more of a sleeper and imo they look better. Just need to get round to getting new wheels and tyres and a big brake kit to make it a little less sketch around the Twisties. Once that's done it's time for a big turbo.

I think golfs are one of the most hideous hot hatches. Best looking one is between the WRX and Speed3 for me. The Ford ST comes 3rd.
@Jonzeyx4 жыл бұрын
Sergio My issue with golfs, atleast newer golfs. Is just how BORING they have become. I get that they are that way to be accessible but my god they are dull. A friend of mine owns a manual Golf R and it just made me feel so disconnected from the road. I've even driven a stage 3 dsg one which I believe had about 500hp and even that was dull. They're quick don't get me wrong but I'll take my Speed 3 that has had the SWAS sensor disconnected and genuinely feels like it's trying to kill me over most of today's Hot hatches

Driving a speed 3 is a blast. @thatdudeinblue. I fell in love with this hot hatch because of your Gen1 review. Mazdaspeed is a performance bargain and very funny!😍 With a little mods it scaries the newer hatches.

It wasn't a rival hamie, it was the precursor. The ms3 walked so that the st could jog and then get gapped by the speed3
@lucasburke60994 жыл бұрын
You keep comparing the speed 3 and the focus st, I know they’re both fwd but doesn’t the speed 3 share a way more similar motor with the focus rs? The rs has a 2.3 and the st has a 2.0 if I’m not mistaken

I have a rebuilt title speed3 with a built motor and stock turbo and full bolt ons. Ive put over 80k on it and its still one of the most fun cars ive ever driven and got it for a great price.

I owned a 13 for almost 6 years. Bought it when it was a year old. Only had about 56K on it and the AC compressor was breaking apart. Sold it because I didn't want to put the money in to fix it. So be mindful of that as well.

They already officially announced a follow-up car, BUT sadly, it won't be a "speed 3". Apparently, they think the Speed3 is too childish, so they are making an AWD Mazda3 Turbo with like 250HP and 320lb/ft of torque, which would be AWESOME, except it's automatic only :/ But for people who would've otherwise gotten a WRX CVT or lament the cancellation of the WRX Hatchback, the Mazda3 Turbo will be their new choice (Watch out Subaru, either put a real auto in the WRX or give us the hatch back!)

See I've upgraded my motor mounts to the Corksport Stage 2 Rmm and Corksport Pmm. Car feels so much more responsive and rarely torque steers. Would highly recommend!

1st gen will aways be the best. 2nd Gen got more finicky and goofy/cartoony. It had 2 wings, massive scoop and a giant grin. Even the North American Mazda president said it was too immature and that's why they won't build another

Mazda is just a great car. From interior to the mechanics, it’s a fun ride. Ive owned 3 vehicles in my life, a 2006 Ford Escape and 2 Mazda 3s (04 & 08). With the exception of a truck, I don’t see myself buying another brand for my daily driver. Great cars 👍
@theTylerMorale4 жыл бұрын
Mazda did announce a 2021 Mazda3 turbocharged. But it will be only automatic. It will be AWD, but that’s going add some weight. Sounds like power estimates are 220-250. With the extra 300-400 pounds not sure how much of an upgrade it will be. But glad they finally got a turbo back in the 3 at least. // Now they just need to take the next step and Speed3 it
@diyflamethrowers44653 жыл бұрын
Speeds are really overlooked. I have a BT 2010 MS3, and no one wants to play with it. When I had my 95 TransAm, every kid in their dad's BMW wanted to line up. That's despite the fact I've built my MS3 that it could smoke my old TA on a 150 wet shot like it was parked.

I have a gray 2010 speed 3. I hear ya on the color but also kinda like that it’s less flashy and more of a sleeper that goes under the radar. Also, not a huge fan of that ricey-sounding exhaust. Personally I prefer the deeper rumble in the Corksport cat-back that’s on mine (also i live in California... so forget downpipe mods). Regardless, this is a great review and that red speed3 is an amazing build.
@sleeper.simulant73274 жыл бұрын
The sound difference is caused by the exhaust manifold not the cat back. This car is running an equal length manifold, vs your stock manifolds very unequal length
@MikeAvilaMD4 жыл бұрын
Driveitsideways 1 yeah that makes sense. Probably good for performance but prefer the unequal length headers. Same thing with the subbie engines.

Had one. A 2007. Torque steer was fixed with a couple mods. But the shifter sucked, even with full Damond engine mounts and Corksport short shifter.

@6:55 I like those underestimated hot hatches which haven't become overpriced collectors items. There are too many overhyped and overpriced collectors items out there, like Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT Apex or Toyota Supra MK4, Nissan Skyline GT-R R34, etc. :)

With Kia replacing the Optima nameplate with the K5, and adding an AWD 2.5L turbo with an 8 speed dual clutch for around 30-35k depending on options, it kind of puts some pressure on the rest of the industry to come out with something similar in that same price range. i think mazda has the best shot atm at making a turbo awd speed3 in around the same price range (maybe slightly higher; around 32-38k instead of 30-35k) and being a valid competitor.
@williamyawn23254 жыл бұрын
Mazda just released a new Mazda3 with similar power and AWD, but it’s Auto ONLY. If they can tune that engine up a tad bit more, put a manual in it and a few suspension updates it would compete with the Veloster N and STI easy.

Make sure to check the coolant because the water pump is prone to leaking, its made of plastic. You might wanna check the oil pan too for damage, also made of plastic and unshielded. You cant check for carbon buildup around the intake valves easily but keep that in mind too.
@msalazar894 жыл бұрын
It torque steers more with the smaller stock turbo that spools super quick, bigger turbos make it have a peakier power band
