NEW PARTS: Quick Links ✅
Lighter Wheels: amzn.to/3w1IsYl
Bigger Tires: amzn.to/3yXVOqd
Better Rotors: amzn.to/3uSBGT8
Best Brake Pads: amzn.to/3iesxSc
Extended Lugs: amzn.to/3ppK0Zt
Inside Today's DIY Installation:
1: How To Choose The Right Size Wheel
Choosing correct sized wheels for your car or truck isn't always easy. Today I show how I personally picked out brand new rims by using the stock measurements and maximum dimensions to gauge a good fitment.
2: Increasing Factory Tire Size
The current stance on the van isn't exactly the best looking, but after widening the tires by over 15%, the rear end doesn't look skinny and small from behind anymore. I increased rubber from a 245/70/17 to a 285/70/17. It should help improve ride quality by having a larger taller sidewall to cushion the suspension system. The profile isn't too tall to cause excessive body roll or left to right sway.
3: Removing Stock Wheels & Tires
Taking off the existing steel wheel tire combo, mounted with Firestone Transforce HT treads, designed for highway terrain but they don't have that aggressive looking tread I'm looking for. Avoiding a negative offset combo is extremely important.
4: Cleaning Rust Off Surfaces
Using a wire brush to clean any surface rust off the metal. Coating with lithium and silicone grease to keep things from getting stuck together. Seized up auto parts are never fun.
5: Removing Caliper Assembly
Had to remove the torque member bolts from behind the calipers to safely replace better pads. The hoses were luckily long enough to set the entire housing onto the ground without kinking or pulling on the brake hose line.
6: Installing Rotors & Pads
Compressing the pistons was extra easy, only had to compress each piston about 1/8 inch because the standard pads were barely worn down.
7: Painting Calipers Black
Sanding down, prepping metal, and masking off important areas with tape to paint the bare calipers gloss black. This will protect from rusting, dust, and prevent other forms of automotive corrosion.
8: Mounting New Wheels & Tires
Time to mount up the new combo! Weighing the same amount as before at 79lb, this new combo will help maintain a strong drivetrain without pushing limits on wear and tear for the differentials, gearing or transmission. The speedometer will also only be inaccurate by a tiny number. If my needle is at 70 mph technically I'll be traveling at 72.7 mph.
9: Burnishing / Breaking In Brakes
-After installing the brake job, it's very beneficial to "burn in" or "break in" the new pads and rotors. This transfers a layer of ceramic material onto the face of the rotor, adding to increased stopping power from adhesion. These transfer layers add performance when you need to STOP FAST!
10: Enjoying The AWESOME LOOK!

I came across this video in the worst mood ever. And I'll be this guys excitement over some wheels and tires put a smile on my face. I'm happy for dude. To see where he's come from shirtless, worn out jigsaw blade cutting 1.5" thick baffles for some 18's in a 2 door to where he is now and he's never lost his good spirit and his love for car audio. If I wasn't homeless and broke I'd love to donate to his Patreon. EXO thanks for the smile Man. Keep doing your thing man. You deserve all the love in the world.

The grooves in the rotors are called “slots”....those rings at the end of the video look like hub centric rings...they go on the inside of the wheel to help center the wheel on the hub ...this reduces unwanted vibrations while driving
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 2 жыл бұрын
No, they are actually load bearing. The weight of the vehicle is transfered to the inner ring of the rim. If the rim bore is too large you will have all the weight transfered to the wheel studs. A little driving and a few potholes and the studs will shear off and you'll lose a wheel. I've seen it happen many times.

Exo is on point, I love it. He explains things so well, which for people like me with OCD makes his videos very entertaining. There's usually a 1:4 rule of thumb, which is every 1 lb you save in unsprung weight equals to about the same as taking 4 lbs of sprung weight out of the vehicle. Adding a heavier tire could've potentially furthered the limit of the amount of equipment that could've been held in the back, since it will already be so close to its weight limit.

Small tip, when jacking up a vehicle with a solid rear axle you should Jack it up from the differential (not the frame) and put your Jack stands on the axle, this avoids unnecessary strain on the opposing wheel and suspension components. The frame is fine when using a lift. Just wanted to share my input as a tech. Love your vids and I’m excited to see the outcome of your project.

Someone may have already mentioned this, but make sure to re-torque the lug nuts after a couple of days. Since this is your first set of aftermarket aluminum rims, I wanted you to know that they have a tendency to "loosen" up after driving a bit. Not all do, but many do. Just check them to be safe. Looks great, man!

Okay, so let's talk about unsprung weight. Wheels and tires are a key part of unsprung weight, and the benefits for reducing it are insane. In the performance car world, reducing unsprung weight has exponential gains. I've heard that losing 40lbs of unsprung weight is the equivalent of losing 80lbs of sprung weight. The more you know. Also: it would have been really cool to see the before/after of the sliding door with the new setup
@Bob_Smith19
@Bob_Smith19 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a van not a sports car. He reduced unsparing weight and reduced the resilience of the wheels at the same time. It’s easy to bend a steel wheel in a loaded van. Aluminum is going to bend a whole lot easier I’ve been driving a fully laden van at work for over two decades. Wheels bend easier than you think.

I would look into doing some suspension upgraded. At the very minimum, I'd upgrade to bilstein shocks, and when you choose the shocks I would get the 5100, but if you get the 5125 series, you can get them in different valving. I'd get firmer valving. Then, I would get front and rear upgraded sway bars. Finally in the rear because of how much weight you have added in the structure, along with all of that wood, not to mention all of the weight you're going to add in audio equipment, I would get some rear leaf spring helpers. You could do airbags, but there is a system I'd recommend called the "roadmaster active suspension." It will help you carry the weight without riding like junk! Awesome build man! Very well thought out and executed!

Lookin good Exo, I want to say that you should properly break in your brakes, you can do that by getting up to about 45-50 mph than stepping on the brakes hard, not enough to lock them up but close. Do this 3 times with about 2 minutes between each time you step on the brakes. Also the other brakes that were behind the rotor is the emergency brake. Love the videos man, keep up the amazing work.

just a safety tip, when using jack stands, you want to have them up against a flat surface, the backup stands you had in place would just end getting pushed over by the angle on the frame rail, and once a jack stand starts to tip over, there is almost no way to stop it, especially once the weight of vehicle shifts to follow the jack stand down

If you want to chrome the lettering on those method letters, the best recommendation that I can think of would be using a Molotow Chrome marker, it is a quick and simple solution to silver chroming that looks great. Past that spritsing some Alclad II Lacquers Gloss Klear Kote ACL310 will seal it off for a long lasting shine.

Project farm did a video about rust protectants that recommended crc after a bunch of tests. That is all I would personally do with the drive shaft. It sprays on and forms a semi-hard gloss that reacts and soaks into the rust.

Great van so far! BUT I highly RECOMMEND taking it to a wheel alignment shop or tire shop and have the speedometer corrected for the size tires and rims. They have a computer that they plug in the and they fix it to the new size. I put bigger rims on my Toyota RAV4 and I got pulled over on the interstate and got a ticket because they said I was going 5 miles over. I had completely forgot.

One way to get the hub center lettering in silver - paint the whole center silver, then when it sets, paint it black all over and when that has set then rub off the black paint back to the silver beneath. If there was a way to do a hard chrome finish that would be ideal. Just a thought, I'm no painting expert. But there's always a way!

You should look at tuning options, would make the thing drive better and could probably get a little more power out of it . And you could have the speedometer corrected which will have the shift points back to normal also

Those brakes are wild. I've never seen that before but I'm only in the car world so I guess that's why. The van is coming along awesome, man. Can't wait to see it finished. If I'm lucky maybe I'll hear it some day. Also, KZbin is on their bs again. I'm subscribed and have all notifications on and didn't get an alert.
