Interesting discussion! Here in Georgia the wind can be very consistent if you are on a slope facing the direction the wind is coming from! When you're on the opposite side of the mountain the wind will never be consistent

That's interesting and definitely makes sense. I will keep that in mind. Thanks

I love Ringold Georgia it’s big woods and has good deer numbers.

I hung in that area also and just outside of there. See lots of deer nothing really big though. First season hunting the big woods here so still learning

But speaking of bears, they’re all over here in Harlan Ky were I live. There’s low deer numbers here and it’s, steep, rough mountains, plus zero agriculture so you have to hunt natural food sources

I'm hunting a BIG mtn buck in Va this yr and EVERYTHING he has said and pointed out is pretty much exactly the scenario I have with drainage and mtn laurel. I'm going to take this info and see if I can fill my tag on this monster mtn buck

Smart young man ... With lots to teach, and I'm guessing by the time he's as old as I am, he won't have any room left in his house to keep all these mountain Buck heads !! Great show

I love these podcasts…especially the Bobby Worthington ones, but…if you’re not walking the woods and doing intense post-pre season scouting then you don’t get the full context, imo!

I hunt mtn big woods all my life 1800ftvto 2500ft steep long mtn with bench 3/4 way up not deeply defined fingers but a few dotted across the section. Shallow gulleys/drainages are majority coming off benchs downhill with 400ft elevation drop to bottoms. Mostly logged high stem count stuff with dotted in big hardwoods clean tracts. Briar thickets galore. Only bottom access 200ft limestone cliffs run the top of mtn and no real drivable access to those either. About the rattling or grunting mtn deer in statement. For 24yrs i woukd have agreed strongly to it does not work the deer do not care in the appslachian chain. However last year and only lastyear i raised hell with a grunt about 12 hunts and by raising hell i mean loud, alot and roaring 10second long buck gone wild grunts. 7-9 of these 12 hunts of doing so i got grunts returned within shooting range if not stem count thick and if id had better setups i would have likely killed one of the grunters! Once on edge of bench 15minutes after dark i had waited to hear what id have thought was the buck i was after when or how long after dark he was coming out! 15minutes i heard walking 50-70yds above me and i went to cutting a rug thp style but turned up seriously and the deer was a buck ( obviously couldnt see it) started grunting back and came straight to me i could see his silhouette only at 15yds he ran back up hill i waited a few minutes cut loose again here he came same 15ish yds and after same dark staredown he trotted away up and right i waited a few mins went 50yds toward him up on bench cut loose again and he came right back then it was over. Wild experience and something to think on. Long 10second grumbles, tending grunts and l9ng loud sequences i shit you not most wouldnt believe if i could do it for them but i had 3/4 success with any bit of brain used on setups or been in a damn tree ida got one or seen more of em gauranteed

Great young man but a mountain buck lives by his nose.If he doesnt learn that young he want live to be old. Thermals and wind are extremely important.

Yeah that’s true but he always gets vulnerable during the rut here in NC mtns. Some of the places I hunt the wind will change 4-5 times during a hunt. I try to get wind in my favor but it’s not the deciding factor. I’ve had really good success with looking at historical data of an area and not missing many opportunities during mid November

You know what they say down south...even a blind squirrel gets lucky and finds an acorn now and then. I hunt in Pa, and I find the complete opposite of his advice to be true. ❓❓

That's part of what makes the mountains interesting. They are complex and vary geographically.
