Well, it's a long time ago now but... I was at this performance. Funny to think I am standing somewhere in that small crowd. Anyhow someone mentioned that the crowd looks "stunned". We were stunned, and really, you had to be there: ripping down the mountain, sliding to a stop, and you want to see what the buzz is about, then this song begins. The reverb coming off that guitar! and his voice! and the sunshine, snow, mountains, and trees... Yes, we were all stunned. One of those things you don't really appreciate as a teen, but looking back, WOW! what a moment!

musta been beautiful. love this song. dunno if anyone ever sang "I'm sorry..." before. I'd remember IF they sang it like this guy does... all I want out of music: make me believe you mean it. and I can be fooled. so fool me. I won't mind a bit.

this band is one of Canada's best kept secrets. They flew under the radar but are timeless. Amazing songwriting and live performance is = to the album. Never gets old listening to this.

Holy SH*T that was tight! Every aspect of this performance was flawless (I wish I could write a more descriptive word). This superb performance sounds even better than the studio version.

So I'm all surrounded By the things I thought I'd put away And I'm all surrounded By the things I thought I'd put away An there s a pile in the closet That's where I threw some yesterday Maybe under the rug That's where I swept some the other day So the mess is drawing forces Outside I hear them say Just come out with your hands up So we can blow you away And I walk out the door Get blown wide open By the things I'd put away And I wasn't even warned Just blown wide open Now the mess is where I lay So I'm all surrounded By the things I thought I'd put away So I'm all surrounded By the things I thought I'd put away And if I'm a slob Well I never looked at it that way Irresponsible Well you're not the first to say But I told her I'm sorry I never wanted it this way Yeah, I still need her But the mess won't go away And I walk out the door Get blown wide open By the things I'd put away And I'm out on the porch Just blown wide open Now the mess is where I lay Yeah, blown wide open Blown wide open Blown wide open The gun's still smokin' Blood keeps flowin' Blown wide open Why's she going All surrounded

I'm here to express love and admiration for Ian and his talent. I have a question maybe someone can help me with. From a quality standpoint I would rate this whole concert here at the ski resort: A/10 V/1. I realize this was the late 90's but why in name of the VHS gods is the vid qual abysmal WHILE the audio fidelity was amazeballs? I cannot believe the acoustics of a SKI RESORT(cold/thinner air??) would enhance this. Definitely not complaining by a damn sight, music is meant to be heard, not watched. If it's as simple as the setup crew were plainly competent, I'd buy that. Compare every one of the Snow Job '98 songs to the Big Sur Gig and the difference in fidelity is obvious. The SnowJob gig sounds better than some of Ian's studio recordings. Or should I just stfu and enjoy the music?

@SDCDIABLO Yeah I know I found out shortly after the post I made here. Apparently The guitar players brother comes into the music store I work at. He and my sales manager who is a big fan always talk about it. When he found out I was a fan he told me "hey ya know his brother is in here every so often" Blew my mind.

@SDCDIABLO I dont compare them. Yes Ian wrote all 3 albums, but all 3 are different. Thornley's 1st album was a lot more hard rock than Big Wreck's albums. All 3 are incredible

I really do want to know why this band couldn't survive and take over the fuckin' world while Nickelback became a permanent pain in the balls. Big Wreck owned, and it's extremely depressing that these guys didn't get what they deserved.

I'll never understand how BW didn't become a massive hit band. Their label dropped the ball in terms of support, then came the NSync/BSB/98 Degrees shit, I guess. I'm happy that I still have this band to myself and a small select group of fans, but sad for BW that they never got the notoriety they deserved for their musicianship, song writing, and ability to put on a great live show.

I get what you're saying because of popularity, but if you put any of those people in positions of improvisation, none of them would match up to any of the guys in this band. They are well trained musicians that actually KNOW their music as much as they feel it. So yeah, cool the other bands have more money(and I'm a huge Soundgarden fan), but in terms of musical ability and prowess, Thornley makes them look like angry little teenagers.

@SDCDIABLO No idea, those Thornley albums were terrible. THere is something about a band dynamic that you can't replace.... So many examples of that in music. I know Thornley did most of the writing but it;s just like the band The Tea Party.... you need the band man.

As far as I’m aware, Ian wrote the first Thornley album with the intention of writing ‘hit’ songs and a lot of what he wrote was edited further by the label. You can tell that he had a lot more free reign with the second Thornley album. And when it comes to Big Wreck, he’s even stated that he writes music for the love of it rather than to put out a hit. He was taken aback by Albatross’s popularity.

I couldn't agree more. I haven't read into it, but i really looked into it, but why not! I honestly like every single one of their songs, both on their first album, and their second one (which no one even knows about. Was just as good) I don't, however, like Thornleys new music. Too cheezy.
