Klaus Maria Brandauer is great, and if you remember him, this movie is one of the reasons. He was sort of the 80s version of Stellan Skarsgard. After the early 90s he basically (but not entirely) quit doing American films. He's in Austria, being a professor and doing European films.

I think Never Say Never Again is very unfairly criticised purely because couldn't use the gun-barrel opening, Monty Norman's James Bond theme and has quite a lighthearted tone similar to Diamonds Are Forever (which I also think is underrated for a lot of the same reasons NSNA is that I'll talk about here). Personally I really appreciate NSNA's uniqueness and I dare say it's more entertaining than Eon Productions original adaption of Thunderball which at times felt overlong and bloated. It also obviously gets compared with Octopussy is it coincided with the release which while a pretty solid entry in the series, was starting to feel a bit stale and needed a fresh start which wouldn't really happen until Timothy Dalton took over the role in 1987's fantastic The Living Daylights. I know if I was given the choice in 1983 to see either Octopussy or Never Say Never Again, I'd choose NSNA and I'd still choose it today. The film is full of incredibly witty dialog, fun action scenes and best of all, Sean Connery returns after a twelve year absence and even though he's greyer and considerably older, he still has that magic and charm he had from his first few films. Connery looks like he's legitimately having fun here which is almost infectious and really helps the entertainment factor. This film was also actually smart enough to use Connery's age to it's advantage and write the story around an aging Bond being brought out of semi-retirement to stop the theft of nuclear warheads which was incredibly fresh in the 1980's and wouldn't be utilised again until Skyfall in 2012. Roger Moore was three years older than Connery and his advancing age was never acknowledged, women almost three decades younger than him just seemingly fell for him and he never clicked in the action scenes like Connery. Over-relying on stunt doubles (even for running scenes) and back projection which hurt his movies, especially 1985's A View To A Kill. Diamonds Are Forever did a similar approach in that considering Connery was older and a bit more portly, they made the film a straight-up comedy rather than an action thriller which was pretty clever. Never Say Never Again's action scenes however are much more kinetic, Connery does what he's able to and there's no overuse of stunt doubles and hokey back projection. The horse jump is still pretty awful though. Never Say Never Again is a unique Bond film which while isn't perfect, is definitely a breath of fresh air in the later Moore years, Connery is on top form as an older Bond and Klaus Maria Brandauer is an interesting villain. Kim Basinger as the Bond girl isn't amazing and the jazzy soundtrack doesn't work in some parts but it's just part of this film's unique appeal. It's just a shame Phyllis Hyman's beautiful theme was rejected in favour of Lani Hall's. Don't be put off by traditionalist Bond fans rejecting this movie just because it's not an Eon Production, it's a great time as a lighthearted, spy romp and Sean Connery giving his farewell performance as Bond is something you really don't want to miss.

Never Say Never Again is pretty awesome. The number 1 thing a Bond film has to be is FUN!!! It's dumb, yes, but it a whole lot of fun and one of Connery's best silly performances ever. Even the stuff that's stupid is fun; even the stuff that hasn't dated well is fun. I always liked this one, and I definitely like it better than Thunderball which felt boring and overly long to me

You should really check out the 1989 French Revolution movies, if you haven't already. Considering you are a history buff and these movies also feature Klaus Maria Brandauer going a bit nuts and Jane Seymour, you'd really enjoy it. Especially so, if you know about the major events during it.

“Never Say Never Again” was far superior to “Thunderball” in every way - script, casting, locations, production design, cinematography, action, pacing, and yes, musical score. Even Terence Young, the director of “Thunderball,” didn’t look back fondly on it. It really was a snooze-fest! Sean Connery got himself in shape for “NSNA,” and had approval of script and casting. The film was designed for an older Bond in a changing world, with character and plot taking precedence over machinery. And, no clown costumes, hot-air balloons, gorilla suits, stereotypical India scenes, Tarzan yells, or Moore-type “humour.” So yes, meet someone on Planet Earth who not only gives a s-- about this film, but considers it one of the best Bond films! I’m thankful that this was Connery’s farewell to James Bond, rather than that Vegas carnival, “Diamonds Are Forever.”

I'm enjoying your videos, especially the humour. I would say the humour in the masseur scene has a history. Probably because the British are traditionally uptight, we developed a smutty sense of humour to counter this repression. One of the best examples of this humour are the Carry On movies. The Carry On series have somehow become like a national institution. This may be because you have to be British to fully appreciate them, or at all! That's a long-winded way of saying sometimes Bond's humour, like the masseur scene (and plenty of rogers Moore gags), draws on the same tradition as the Carry On movies. Octopussy is awesome. Get over the title and give it another go. The Berlin section is very tense with some of the best stunts. It is bit racist but is nothing compared to Indy 2. NSNA isn't fit to shine Clown Bond's giant shoes!

I never really had a problem with the title, although it is a bit weird to me whenever they say something like "We need to save Octopussy." It's like someone saying "We need to save Cactussy" or "Honda Civicy" It's just such a weird name to say seductively or panicked. I'll definitely watch it again at some point. I was surprised by how much I loved License to Kill after I thought I hated it, so anything is possible. I like the scenes between Maud Adams and Roger Moore, but it takes so long to get to that stuff.

@@BigBeakEntertainment The first act of LTK is shockingly bad. It's like a weekday afternoon tv movie but with violence. I'll grant you the truck chase is beautifully thought out but LTK is still one of the weakest of the series. Shame because TLD is one of the very best.

Octopussy has some strong points for sure. I think the cinematography really shined in parts and the movie created a cool atmosphere. The race based humor is stupid and it's intentional campiness really breaks up the pacing of the movie (but that's a curse of all the Moore stuff)
