Chrysler has an error code P1494. This is a code that is thrown up when the Leak Detection Pump can not do the job it is intended for, which is keeping our planet green by controlling emissions. Back in the early 1970s the government decided we needed to control the bad fumes cars and trucks were releasing into the air. Gasoline emissions, as many of you know, is the leading cause of smog in cities. The EVAP system (Evaporative Emission Control System) checks the pressure in your intake manifold and basically sends the bad fumes to what is called a charcoal canister. Your catalytic converter does the rest, but let us not get off subject. In this video, I show you how not to make the same mistake I did. I am sure some of y'all have a nicer vehicle than the Blue Beast, which means your Leak Detection Pump (LDP by the way) is probably more costly than the one for my 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport. You can try replacing the $12 (in most cases) gas/fuel cap as well. At any rate, I hope this helps a lot of people to avoid costly repairs. Please remember to hit the like button if you like the video, comment if you have one and subscribe! My goal is to get to 1K subscribers by the end of the year and y'all can help me do that. If you are already subscribed and want to see a little more of this kind of video, let me know and I will make it happen. I am always busy and do not mind bringing y'all along on the journey! Take care y'all!!

People don't understand what the P01494 code really means and what it doesn't mean. The computer self checks the leak detection pump (LDP) periodically and P01494 only means the LDP didn't pass the self-check. Problems with leaks in the large hoses, the gas tank, the charcoal canister or the gas cap will cause other leak specific codes but not P01494. Next, the LDP needs engine vacuum to work and pass the self check. So the first thing to do is check for engine vacuum right at the pump. It comes in through the small vacuum line from the intake manifold. Measure for vacuum RIGHT AT THE PUMP and if you don't have it you need to fix that first. if you have vacuum but still get P01494 it could be an electrical problem between the computer and the LDP. If not then the only thing left would be the LDP itself.

Awesome explanation Joe! Thank you for the comment man!!
@joevignolor4u949
@joevignolor4u949 6 жыл бұрын
You are welcome. In a situation like that all you really needed to do was pull the vacuum line off the LDP and put your finger on the end to see if you could feel vacuum. The vacuum line is essentially the power supply for the LDP as the vacuum is what moves the diaphragm inside the LDP up and down. The 12 volts coming from the computer only operates the vacuum control valve inside the LDP. The $100 you spent probably wasn't really a waste. Chrysler LDP's fail quite often so you probably would have had to replace it sooner or later anyway. The rubber diaphragms inside crack and leak, which is usually what makes the pump not work. The other common problem is the reed switch inside the LDP goes bad so the LDP doesn't send the proper valve position signal back to the computer. Either condition will cause the LDP to fail the self test and throw the P01494 code.

Thank you BigBearFishing! My engine light has been on for months and I have a North Carolina vehicle inspection coming up. 2002 Dodge Ram Van. I finally needed to act on this and I received some good advise to get my van tested FREE at a auto-parts place. They found the error code P1494. From there I looked on You Tube and found your video. It was very helpful and encouraged me to try solving this issue myself. I had to pull the battery to access the leak detection pump and sure enough I found a dry-rot elbow. After a trip to Advance Auto I replaced the elbow, put my battery back in, and cranked it on. EUREKA! Thanks so much. I saved a bunch of money. I appreciate your help. You are a good man!

Thank you !! Same problem with my 2000 XJ P1494 code, smelled gas, and was idling high, and I was just about to push the order button on amazon for the $100 leak detection pump and thought ... let me check KZbin first. Your vid was 2nd on list and just by the title I knew this was the one. My problem was the exact same elbow - just totally gone. Replaced with some rubber hose I had and disconnected battery for 20 mins. Hooked it up, normal idle, no fuel smell, and code cleared. Thanks again for making the vid.

@@BigBearFishing for sure. I guess it's common sense. We were told it wasn't worth it to fix our old car due to cost so I didn't look any further but even if it is a $100 LDP, if that's all it was it would be worth it, Bec I was trying to see if I could keep the car running and registered without having to spend an excessive amount in repairs. But if it's just something like this obviously that's even better. I did look up more info on the codes when this happened last year, I recall but not any specific videos. That's too bad- cuz then I gave up for 8 months and the car just sat there on my property and now somethings wrong in the brake lines somewhere. I press the brake pedal all the way down but nothing happens. (I did this while on a flat surface where the car didn't roll very far, immediately shut it off then put it in park and the e-brake for good measure). But now I'm wondering if it couldn't be even a similar fix- a rotted off connector somewhere. I can't really afford another car right now so I was hoping to get this one running again for under $500. We took it in for a simple coolant problem fix but I didn't bring up the fail code and I guess he didn't think to check anything related to the exhaust system. Well, maybe its not too late to get both problems sorted out! Hope so. Have a great one and good looking out for sharing this basic but very helpful info! Also thanks for posting up fishing tips! I haven't had a chance to look around the rest of your channel but I will. Just because a code description mentions a part, doesn't mean that part is bad. Even good mechanics are guilty of this. If you don't understand the entire system and how it works, you need to educate yourself and understand how to troubleshoot the system you are working on. A simple cracked hose causing a vacuum leak could cause major issues.
